I Will Derive!

- I parody of "I Will Survive" that I did with a couple of my friends for our Calculus and Physics classes.
Lyrics:
At first I was afraid, what could the answer be?
It said given this position find velocity.
So I tried to work it out, but I knew that I was wrong.
I struggled; I cried, "A problem shouldn't take this long!"
I tried to think, control my nerve.
It's evident that speed's tangential to that time-position curve.
This problem would be mine if I just knew that tangent line.
But what to do? Show me a sign!
So I thought back to Calculus.
Way back to Newton and to Leibniz,
And to problems just like this.
And just like that when I had given up all hope,
I said nope, there's just one way to find that slope.
And so now I, I will derive.
Find the derivative of x position with respect to time.
It's as easy as can be, just have to take dx/dt.
I will derive, I will derive. Hey, hey!
And then I went ahead to the second part.
But as I looked at it I wasn't sure quite how to start.
It was asking for the time at which velocity
Was at a maximum, and I was thinking "Woe is me."
But then I thought, this much I know.
I've gotta find acceleration, set it equal to zero.
Now if I only knew what the function was for a.
I guess I'm gonna have to solve for it someway.
So I thought back to Calculus.
Way back to Newton and to Leibniz,
And to problems just like this.
And just like that when I had given up all hope,
I said nope, there's just one way to find that slope.
And so now I, I will derive.
Find the derivative of velocity with respect to time.
It's as easy as can be, just have to take dv/dt.
I will derive, I will derive.
I will derive, I will derive, I will derive! Видеоклипы
The integral song is this song played backwards.

Lmao
clever xD

I am just a constant, nobody loves me.
He is just a constant, might as well call him C!
Just don't drink and derive.
Well , guess that's the funniest think I have sawn on the internet , might Aswell quit it here
tsg1zzn it is differentiate, not derive
It's still correct, he is deriving the answer using differentiation

How did you guys integrate all those math references into one song? I thought there was a limit.
Well, it just converged all together. It's sad that there is no series to this.
The amount of maths references to the amount of lines in the song are very similar, resulting in a very small common ratio. So no matter how far you push the limit, the amount of sequels to the series always converges back to 0.
It was a series of derivative epiphanies.
Fuck this, im not old enough
I guess the function converges, so there is no limit :)
its ridiculous how well this video stands up to time. it could have been made today in a faux retro style. beautiful. art.
This is faux retro style even for 2008

I just have to say, I emailed this video to my math professor and he enjoyed it so much that he watched it several more times and doing so made him late to his Calc II lecture. I think that qualifies as irony...
Love the video.
15 years later and it’s still a great song
I want to like but its at 314 likes right now
That guy with orange polo is so calculus.

I think this might be the most impactful math parody on RUclips
I concur
Every calculus student needs to watch this. Thanks to my calc professor for ahowing us this!
the class next door was listening to this loudly during our calculus exam.
14 years later and yet it still holds up so well
It’s still stuck in my head by which I mean it’s deriving me crazy.
now is the moment, 5 years later, when I realize I can finally watch this and actually understand it... and bask in its full glory.
Can't believe this video is 12 years old. I was 6 years old and now I'm at university. It popped in my head a few days ago from math class and I had to find it. Truly fantastic.
Not only are the lyrics accurate, well thought out, and abjectly *hilarious*, but the video is extremely well acted and edited as well! This is my new favorite math video on RUclips! I can't believe you guys did this in high school! [5/5]
Ok...can I just say, I'm 49 and will be taking calculus this fall (I'm in TRIG now) and I was like 17 when I will Survive came out. But you, you have done an incredible video. I hope I'll have that talent when I get my deriving license.
Awesome video...a favorite.
Got it yet? :D
Bro you could have a math phd now we need an update lol

I found elements of trig to be much harder than most calculus

16 years later and this song is still amazing. I'm using this as background music while I study. It's crazy to think this video was uploaded 2 months after I was born!

2021, I remember I found this video in 2014, when I was facing a hard time with Calculus at my degree in Engineering. At first it was funny, but as I watched for the 7th time (I do procrastinate a little), I realized it was telling me exactly what I needed to learn. I remembered the song at my exams aand didn't passed, obviously, there were plenty more than limits, derivatives and integral. But at least I smiled.
7 years later, I'm still here guys, hope you're all having an awesome career and life.
I first watched this video 5 years ago, and still makes me laugh a lot. I would give it a thousand likes.
you should watch it again now

This video came out when I was six years old. Eleven years later I will take the AP Calculus Exam
love this. I abandoned mathematics for law, and have now concluded that mathematics was more pure and beautiful, but law is more fun. and crazy.
Why :(
it's scary to think that when this video was released, i wasn't alive yet. in two years, i'll understand all of the things this song talks about. time passes. and when i'm in a classroom like this, the thing definitely stuck in my head will be this. thank you.
This comment gave me anxiety. Make time stop, please.

This song will permanently live rent free in my brain. I remember my brother played it for me and our mom when we were lost in Tennessee. Even though my mom was stressed, she found the song laughed and called it "doopy," a word we used for silly things. I was too young to know what derivatives were, but it still made me happy to listen and see everyone laughing. Even though this channel has long since been dead, I am thankful for the good memory this song gave me. Thank you for making this parody.
Oh wow, my dad uses the word doopy to describe silly things too.
When you realize it's all ogre tomorrow so the best you can do is memorize this song
amen
Ogre
It's never ogre
And this is how my class lost all their sanity points.

This is officially the best out of the blue recommendation youtube has ever give me, this is a masterpiece

There are no words for how awesome this song is.

I'm a Physics teacher. I showed this to my students during a lecture and they loved it.
This video is so much fun that I've watched it over and over. I sent the link to my Calculus teacher and he's going to let the entire class watch it. I'm sure everyone's going to get a kick out of it. From one Calculus fan to another--thanks a million!

How did RUclips find this masterpiece 15 years later? I’m impressed, RUclips was quite a different place back then.
This is the single greatest thing I have EVER come across!!!
How'd they dance on a calculator bruh
ikr wtf
Especially since this was back in 2008
You could just convert images frame by frame to monochromatic bitmaps but I'm assuming they used a more efficient method than that; perhaps a filter.
Looks good though.
Can't they just make video with dancing, make it looks like on the calculator and than use video montage?
@@artemkorotenko666 this* was like 13 years ago lol
Got recommended this in 2023. Probably didn't come across it earlier, probably cos when it came it out I hadn't learned calculus yet. Glad to have found it now.
I listen to this song to pump me up before exams! You guys are getting me through my Engineering degree
I just want to know what great things these two guy's went on to do.
From another comment: "I was their calculus teacher. The one with the curly hair went to the University of Oklahoma and went on to Carnegie Mellon and got his masters. He could have went anywhere he wanted and majored in anything he wanted, but his love was film and I believe that is what he majored in. The other young man went to the University of Arkansas and got his degree in Electrical Engineering, and he is now a proud dad. The girl that made a cameo in now an instructor at Northeastern State University. All were fantastic students and great kids."

This will always be a classic.
I am especially appreciative of the large CRT TV on the rolling metal cart in the background, and the VCR on the shelf below. 😎
These guys are definitely at MIT now
Derek Clarke lol if them taking Calculus in high school brings them to MIT - where do I go for taking differential equations + linear algebra? :^)

UnforsakenXII Finances > academics in the education system. That's why I don't like the stigma of community colleges, people always assume those attending them are stupid. That definitely does apply to some of the students, but there are definitely students who are smart.
