Some are not war flags, just the flag of the military. For example, the US was just the flag of the army, and each branch has its own flag. The Marines is especially epic. The actual war flag of the US is a backwards US flag, as though it was flying into battle.
Same with the German one: the shown flag is simply the flag of the federal authorities/ agencies. Germany no longer has a war flag as such.
The US "war flag" is the US national flag, not a backwards US flag. It also serves as the US maritime/naval flag. The canton of the national flag is the naval jack.

Not even that. The "backwards" flag is just used in patches and on vehicles to represent the flag flowing towards the direction of travel, because otherwise it looks off. It's aesthetics, nothing more.

Japan's navy flag is not used by the army even during the war. The Maritime Self-Defense Force has been using it since the end of the war.
