Chrysler makes the ZF transmission in several models, including the Ram, challenger, charger. BMW in 2020 has almost went exclusively to the 8hp. Jaguar uses them in all their cars too. In my opinion it is the best performance transmission ever made. The shifts are almost as fast as a DCT, with the benefits of a torque converter.
Hi James, I just saw all your videos and I am amazed by your knowledge on the subject and also how helpful your videos are, especially for those who don't want to spend a fortune in Maserati dealers. Thank you for sharing
This is the one I use on my ZF 8HP. I have a house in Spartanburg, SC N/A the headquarters of ZF, Michelin, and BMW. Also my friend Dan Milot is one of the VP’s of ZF. The 8hp is in so many cars it is insane. I have 5 cars with an 8hp. I drive all my cars really hard and track them at Sebring or BMW spartanburg. I do complete fluid changes every 5k or less. For the price it is worth it. I just used it on my Ghibli last week. ATP B-457 Automatic Transmission Filter www.amazon.com/dp/B01J1LQ1ME/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_K4OhEbQYDT7BG Note amazon does not have it lined as a ghibli part. But it worked on my 2016 Sq4 and my DB11.
Although I normally recommend 80,500KM (50,000 Miles) gear box fluid changes, on ZF automatic transmissions it is not necessary. Maserati does not offer drain and fill gear box fluid services nor is it listed in the service manual under milage service intervals. These ZF gearboxes are very reliable, one would really have to do some work to mess one up. These ZF 8 speed autos have a very low failure yet and that is typically user error (extreme abuse).
HI James, is that offer about you resetting the service light on a Maserati after an oil change if one is near your neighborhood still good? A friend is changing the oil on my Ghibli in July but doesn't have the reset tool. If I could swing by your garage in July that would be awesome. Please let me know. Thank you for all your videos!
Hey I've been going back and forth between maserati ghibli s q4 and Audi a7... my dream car is Maserati ghibli s q4.. just been afraid I might end up with a bad apple. A7 is my 2nd choice.. have you ever had any issues at all with your ghibli other than battery
Be picky on what you want in your Ghibli. Dont settle for the cheapest one. Make sure it has some mileage on it, low mileage can mean its been garaged a lot, spent a lot time at the shop, etc. Higher mileage on a car is proof of how reliable its been. Mine had 53k miles on it when I bought it. Get pre purchase inspection done on it.
Easy answer. Do you want technology or not? If you want a pure drivers car with bluetooth, get the Maserati. If you want an electronic sensor for everything, get the audi. Believe it or not, the Maserati would be a better used car purchase. With viturslnly no technology, less to break. The thing I like the best about the ghibli is the ZF programming on the transmission. The gearbox shifts like a race-car. The shifts are almost as solid as a MAGNA 7-speed, but with reliability. Good hunting!.
I test drove both Maserati ghibli s q4 and audi a7... both drive excellent but ghibli drives like sports car, I had 2016 Go mango Dodge challenger I was at stand still in traffic when SUV wasn't looking at hit me at 55mph.. now it's total.. I wanted something sporty but more luxurious at Same time.. reliability on Maserati ghibli is at "6" while on Audi a7 is at "8"... unless I get a certified ghibli with a 4year warranty unlimited miles from actually Maserati dealership here in Atlanta
Maserati documentation I have does not say the transmission fluid does not need to be changed. Maserati Documentation I have says "Fluid change not envisaged in schedule". Since their schedule only applies to the life of the warranty which is for 50K miles or 3 years, and the ZF documentation says "Depending on driving style, ZF recommends changing fluid every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometers or 8 years at the maximum." So yes, our Maserati transmission fluid, or "OIL" as you called it does need to be changed. Just not during Maserati's maintenance schedule. For that matter, Maserati also says change engine oil every 12.500 miles or 1 year. Not me, I change oil every 6K to 8K miles or twice a year. I do it myself so it's a lot cheaper.
James DIY Garage I working on this cars and most of them with mileage over 120.000/140.00/160.000 km and never had issues with that transmission. Also if you contact with ZF, ask them again what is lifetime of this transmision ;)
@@szymonkrystianik3860 I did and they said it depends on how the transmission was used. As you know these transmissions are also used by many other auto manufacturers including RAM Trucks. They said if it used to tow heavy things or off road driving or tracking your car it can reduce the life of the transmission. Also, it's logical to assume that if you do change transmission fluid on an appropriate schedule it will last longer than if you don't change it at all. These transmissions have only been on the market for about 5 years. So the jury is still out on how long these will actually last with or without maintenance. I for one don't want to risk forking out $6K or so to replace my transmission. So I will do the maintenance at an appropriate mileage/time and do a video on it. Maybe when my car reaches 100K miles. It has 76K now. So another 25K miles. Two years probably. Unless of course my transmission starts to misbehave. Then I will do it sooner. Thanks for commenting.

Fuel vapor leak. I believe your car has the capless fuel filling system. This system has a little door that closes when you pull fuel nozzle out after fueling your car. That little door may be loose and either not closing at all or not properly sealing. Check that out.
@@JamesDIYGarage thanks so much James you're absolutely right I noticed that when I be putting fuel in my car. Just an fyi, you can buy just the filter for 42 bucks if you want to save money. Dealers do the pan because it is a 10 minute job.
Where do you get it? Can you post the link in a reply to this comment?
