- Michael Raso reviews, loads and shoots with the 1952 Zeiss Ikon MoviKon 8 Camera - a unique, well-built camera that may be the very best Double 8 camera ever made!
Movie film, developing and scanning available from filmphotograph...
Mike -- did some research, your specific Movikon 8 has the focus distances in feet and inches -- there are also versions marked in meters (they way to know is that the closest focus would be "0.2" (as in meters).
Indeed the ' and " marks for feet and inches give it away too.
"E" likely stands for "Eigenblick" or momentary/instant. Kodak needs to put this with interchangeable lenses into production, rather than develop a new Super 8 camera. All mechanical, no electronics. And in metal with a Metropolis aesthetic.
amazing technology
Two flaws:
The coldshoe mount IS for flash modules, you just need to use the module manually.
The focus markings on your camera ARE in feet, as is obvious by the '' and ' markings (for feet and inches) as well as the fact it goes up in intervals of 6 and not 5, which would be typical of a meter-based focus marking.
from other videos they advertise the focus range starting at 20cm, so 8in for the first mark would be roughly equivalent and would agree with your feet/inches
This sounds crazy but I really enjoy watching you wind the camera. What we have here is Another Great Shew!
Beautiful camera added this to my wishlist.
That is so rad. And that commercial at the end?!? 😍
The red dot means you can make movie in focus from like 1,77m - infinity
The numbers on yours are different from mine
Still the most beautiful camera in my collection. The projector that they made for it is stunning too.
Just got mine from NYC….. what a sweet marvel! You keep tempting me to acquire new, cool cameras!
I've been trying to find one of these! Thanks for this! I was curious how the spools worked. What a fascinating design.
I have a one
Please stop with the goofy sound effects.

"Once you become intimate with your camera..." Hey! This is a family channel!!!! :-)
2nd Reaction -- *INVITE ME TO DINNER*!!!!! What the hack hot dogs/sausages were those?!?!?!?!
"Franks and Burgers"!
Just got one of these cameras and the lens is stuck at 2.8. Can’t seem to adjust the f stop. Any tips on how to get it working again?
Maybe the aperture blades are sticky or stuck. Search around on forums for repair info.
"How brilliant is that?" -- a knowing or unknowing pun????
That's a cool camera.
I love this beautiful camera and totally regret not buying it when I found one in good condition on a local flea market. Yeah, that was me not wanting to get into regular 8. The same me that didn't want to get into Super 8 and later DS8. ;)
I went true my stuff at home and discovered that I own one of these cameras. I don't know when or where I bought it. I ended up here after searching for information about it. Must say, this video is one of the strangest, because of the cartoon sound FX, but also a great information video. Thanks
Btw, how long can you film with one filmroll?
One roll gives you approx 4 minutes of footage.
@@FilmPhotographyProject thanks, that's great. I will definitely investigate this camera. Think I forgot about it because I was in the middle of moving to a new appartement. There most be a way to digitalise the film afterwards. Once again thank you!
@@Ziqver lucky find! did you end up using the camera - how’d it go??
@@c.nobody I'm working on it. I wanted to find the small lens as well. Then I will have to be sure that I have the settings right, since buying the film is a bit expensive here. Even if interesting things can come out of the wrong settings two. 🙂
awesome video. you talked me into getting one :) i have a couple 35mm zeiss ikon cameras, and i love their quality, so when i saw this i just had to have one too. lol 😂 im sort of confused with the conversion of film speed to shutter speed for light meter use. if the film speed is 16 fps, wouldnt the shutter speed be 1/16th?
16fps - shutter 1/30th sec. Is what it is. Enjoy shooting! - Mike
@@FilmPhotographyProject hello! thank you very much for your time and confirming the shutter speed. if i may ask another stupid question ... what are the 4 little black triangles in the viewfinder for? (2 on the left and 2 on the right) thanks again for responding. cheers, the Rabbit. =:3
@@FilmPhotographyProject oh, btw ... love your sense of humor! thanks for all the smiles too 😃
Instant reaction -- *COOL*!!!!
Nice! My father had that camera for tryouts in the late fifties but then decided to go for a Bauer 88B - the camera I first used when I was nine years old and fell in love with film. Fun to watch..!
Finally got my hands on one. Very cool very unique but its also brilliant in its logic it only took me a few minutes to figure out how this camera worked I initially thought loading film would be a pain but its actually easier then most of my other cameras
Have inherited one of these! It would certainly survive a tumble down a mountain, (which is quite possible that it did once or twice, as it belonged to Frank Long FRPS, who regularly took it skiing!)
Reminds me of a 1950s version of a Sony Ruvi camera…(but this one is way cooler)
Are you guys familiar with the Sekonic line of 1960’s 8mm cameras? The Sekonic Simplomat, and the Sekonic Dualmatic Zoom, that have a film compartment that flips over, so you can shoot the 2nd half of the dbl 8 film without opening and flipping the film on the reels.
Great idea, and makes the “flip” much easier, and protects the end of the first half of film from light! I love these! 💕🎥🎆
Hi Donald, we have a Sekonic Simplomat here. Have yet to test it. Looking forward! - Mike
@@FilmPhotographyProject I think you’ll like it!
My Dualmatic Zoom, came with film that had been shot on one side… so I did the flip, and will try it out on a warmish sunny winter day, hopefully soon, but I live the idea of it!
Good luck with yours!
Great looking little camera. Loved the dining room shot of you in the mirror LOL
I just ordered one of these from Europe based on this video.
Incredible camera Mike!
Clean your lens before record for Christ sake
I think I have to have one now. Such a cool camera.
Can this camera take 100ft length 8mm film spools? I might buy one and record longer films with it. Like private films or movies I love.
P. S. Also considering filming in colour. So, does it take color film? If not then any budget friendly equivalents you can give me would be great
The Zeiss Ikon MoviKon takes 25 foot rolls of Double 8 Film.
@@FilmPhotographyProject then what cameras do, other than the Bolex h8. I am looking for a budget friendly option, as I am thinking of filming short films and some of my favourite doctor who stories.
I wonder if theres a way to convert double 8 spools to have a sort of darkbag sleeve to protect the film from light when you load it and run it through the camera that way you didn't have to worry about exposing the first 3-4 feet of film and only expose 1-2 feet
Purchase a large film changing bag. The challenge is to be familiar enough with your camera so that you can load (and flip rolls) in the dark. Can be done! - Mike
Частота кадров какая? Скорость одна?
16 кадров в секунду. Некоторые модели предлагают 12 кадров и 24 кадра в секунду.
What, no mention of me sending you the link on Facebook messenger? :) Just kidding, and nice video! I picked up one of these myself a while back. Haven't used it yet because I'm too poor for film :P
Looked it up - it's true! You did send me a link! Many thanks.
@@FilmPhotographyProject :)
Beautiful and Interesting but, How long takes that film?
16fps = 2x 2 minutes = 4 minutes
It's a sale! I just bought one of eBay. A later model with the variable frame rate. Let's hope it isn't a dud. Thanks for continuing my camera addiction. BTW: Pretty certain that will be feet on the focus scale.
Just found the instructions and they are in inches and feet.
@@RogerHyam did it work??
@@c.nobody Alas no! The fungus on the lens was terrible and the lens mechanism so small it can't be got at. The motor didn't run at first but after some poking around it came to life. Nice ornament though.
I just bought one of these; will be ordering some film soon.
how much did you get it for?
I just loaded my first film on this beauty. Can't wait to see the results. Thanks for all the useful tips! And the sound... man, instant love! ;)
Hey, how did it go? I just came across one. Any tips for a beginner lol
@@c.nobody I just got my developed film back and the camera works perfect!
Where do you get film from?
