The ANA 777-300ER premium economy experience (HND-SFO)

  • ANA 777-300ER premium economy is mostly really awesome. The seats are incredible! They offer generous legroom, very steep recline, and business class quality video screens.
    That said, the food is disapointing. Well, at least by premium economy standards.
    This is a full review of ANA flight number 108 from Tokyo (Haneda) to San Francisco. Total flying time was 9 hours and 16 minutes. My seat was 26G, and the aircraft registration was JA793A.

    I'd much rather have the more comfortable premium seats than "premium food" any day. Food is a transitory enjoyment that's typically a hit or miss anyway, the seat sticks with you the entire flight. I would say ANA did it just right for my preference in the balance of those two things.

    I've flown ANA long haul flights 14 or 15 times this year. And yes, while I love everything else about the airline, their food service leaves quite a bit to be desired. I'm glad you got mayo on your sandwich; my last one was hard buns with a slight piece of lettuce squished between the slices, and packaged in a sealed commercial, impossible to open bag. I am pretty sure they bought out the 7-Eleven day-old inventory.. With that said, I still love ANA and hope some day they'll find decent catering.

      Yes, going to the airline lounge before your flight is always nice!!! Always!!! You can eat a good medium size meal and that will satisfy you. Well, in the Premium Economy cabin areas I like the first row after Business Class either on the right or left side of that cabin space on other airlines. That is the row area that I like on other airlines. Finally, yes, that jet stream in the sky is pushing us big aircraft boy soo fast. I experienced that many times coming back from Hong Kong on the recently retired 747-400s.

    Hi Scott. Good to see your new video! ANA and JAL premium economy will get you into their lounges. As you can expect, the lounges get busy due to the easier lounge access policy. A sandwich and water only for a meal? That's disappointing even considering the flight time to SFO being less than 10 hours.

    • @sanspotter

    ANA is one of the best airlines in the world. The food looks like it didn’t measure up but my experience is that late night departures have a reduced food service. I normally would eat a full meal in the club in this situation and not eat the on board meal, just go to sleep. Anyway Thank you for this video because I’m actually planning to book an ANA premium economy flight right now.

    • @90293Mike
      @90293Mike 6 месяцев назад

      @@Ben-eh1qtI consider “late night” as 11 PM or later. For a 9 PM departure, I would expect a normal meal service. Of course this would vary by airline. And I actually haven’t flown that many ANA flights that have left at night, so I’m not really sure what the cutoff time is between a normal meal service and the sandwich that he got.

    • @Ben-eh1qt
      @Ben-eh1qt 6 месяцев назад

      @@90293Mike yeah I would expect that 9:05pm would be a normal meal but who the freak knows. Annoyingly flights booked with United miles cannot pay for the 2500 yen premium meal for regular economy. Only flights booked through their own stupid website. So I guess I'm just going to pig out at the lounge and then go to sleep and screw the meal haha.

    I’ve taken this configuration a couple of times now and love it. JAL has a larger seat pitch at 42”, but, for some reason, I felt more comfortable in ANA’s 38” seat, despite being 6’2” tall. I think the recline was better. In terms of service, both JAL and ANA are great. Food I’d give to ANA in PE and economy, but JAL’s Japanese menu in business is better than ANA.

    Hey Scott, great video as always! I totally understand your disappointment with ANA's reduced meal service on long haul flights. Unfortunately, this isn't a COVID cutback. Both ANA and JAL had that same service flow on late night departures even before the pandemic. And both Japanese premium economies have the same quirks: lounge access with the ticket, but same meals as in economy. I'd recommend you try JAL in the future. I heard they serve better food in 2023. If you want the full ANA experience right now, you'll have to take a daytime flight, although only HND-JFK and HND-LHR are guaranteed the newest 777 configuration.

    I believe, JAL also offers lounge access to premium economy, though I've never flown with them yet. Cathay Pacific has great premium economy as well, and the meals we're a tad better than what you showed. Though, flying with Philippine Airlines, you're not going to get seats quite as good, especially the inferior 777 business class seats they have that are closer to premium economy seats with lie-flat 2-3-2 configuration. But they serve full meals no matter what time you leave. I've flown a couple of 3 hour Asian flights after midnight, and there goes the full hot meal when all I want to do is sleep. I've only flown ANA once round-trip domestic Tokyo-Chitose/Sapporo since they're codeshare with PAL, and absolutely nothing, and their domestic 777s and 787s are tightly packed.

    The general consensus with premium economy is that the price you paid is for the extra seating comfort and that's that. The food is eco food, which can be good or bad depending on the carrier. The only time I'd consider buying premeco on my own is if the cost difference is less than half the price of a eco seat.

    Kind of surprised that the catering isn't that good since it's departing from HND vs your other video which was a departure from SFO. They have their own kitchen at HND/NRT vs SFO. I think they even have their own kitchen at HNL after Gov Ige helped pay for the renovation of Concourse C for them to dock the special A380 livery planes. I also liked that at NRT when I went to the ANA lounge even though I was on economy ticket, but since I'm UA Gold I could enter the lounge. I was there at 12pm and my flight wasn't until 915PM and I was able to eat a bunch of food and drink beer all day long while plane spotting and taking photos and ordering from the Ramen Bar too.

    ANA has a big investment in their hard product (seating, IFE), but they've totally missed the boat with the the food service. That's something they can correct easily, and they'd be wise to do so. Many flyers expect a "premium" meal in Premium Economy.

Which sucks, because it is otherwise an excellent seat if you're tall, but most tall people who side sleep with bump the table. I found ANA's old J seat easier to sleep in, even though its bed length is shorter than me.

    I took the exact same flight last month and had the same response. The hard product was quite good but the food service was amongst the worst I have had. I had flown Air New Zealand in premium economy a few weeks prior and ANA paled in comparison. Too bad.

    Sadly, ANA is still using the old plane with old seats for their NH001 flight from Washington, D.C. to Tokyo. Earlier this year, we went on Premium Economy to Tokyo and took Business Class back. The old Premium Economy seat was uncomfortable but bearable. After many years on Economy, we decided to spend more for comfort and not risk getting neck sprain.

      Yeah, there’s a pretty big difference between the old and new premium economy seat. The onboard is probably the same though.

    I am shocked at the substandard meals served in this ANA cabin class because my experience flying ANA (2 transpacific and 2 regional) have all had great meals. What’s with ANA these days? The only reason for the bad meals I can think of is that there may have been last minute catering problems.

  • @alexsakon
    @alexsakon 6 месяцев назад +1

    Food in ANA is good even in economy. I think it was the unfortunate fact that it was a red eye and we Japanese people don’t like to eat late at night. I do agree that the food looked no different than economy, I feel that this isn’t an entirely uncommon practice among many airlines in regards to premium economy.

    • @sanspotter
      @sanspotter  6 месяцев назад

      Next time I think I’m going to try a daytime flight instead (just to see if the food is any better). Maybe things are changing, but I remember pre-pandemic that the food in most premium economy cabins was almost business quality. Oh well. At least the seat was amazing. 😄

      JAL and ANA serve economy meals to PE passengers

  • @nmpls
    @nmpls 6 месяцев назад +2

    Just an FYI on ANA PE meal service. If you are flying PE out of TYO only, you can pre-book and pay for a special meal, which I think was like $10. It is completely worth it. It is much closer to a J meal on ANA than the Y meal you get in PE otherwise. Also, you get both the J dessert (which was amazing) and the Y dessert. That said my NRT-SFO flight appears to have given PE and Y a much more significant meal than you show.
    You also can get access to the J wine at that time.
    ANA upgrades are really weird. I flew SFO-NRT-SFO on an award ticket in PE. I had no status. I showed up to SFO and got a free upgrade. Per the checkin desk staff, Y was oversold, so they bumped me and a couple other lucky people to J and a few lucky Y passengers to PE. (I also got polaris access). The only method I could sort if that most of the front row of PE got upgraded to J.

    ANA assumes that you are ready to sleep boarding the late flights (10 pm and later). Sorry you are surprised. This happens to everyone flying the late flights. You also get no dinner on business or first class. They assume you filled up your belly at the ANA lounge. I had the same surprise when I first flew the ANA late flights, but got used to it very quickly by eating prior to the flight and then falling asleep. I do not mind the lack of food, almost makes sense that they do not serve dinner after 10 pm. Also, now that you know, better eat your share at the ANA lounge or at a restaurant prior to boarding the late flights on ANA.

    Having flown ANA PE dozens of times between Manila and the US mainland in the last few years, I’ve never had a meal as sorry as the one they served on your flight! I did notice in my last flight with ANA PE in July, that the meals weren’t as good as usual. Between JAL and ANA, for me ANA has superior seats, more comfy on the 777 than on their 787s. The 787 PE seats don’t seem to have as much padding. JAL’s seats are great, but ANA’s are better. However JAL’s meal service, even in economy is superior. I flew JAL economy a couple of weeks ago on their from MNL on their 787 and to SEA on a 767 and those have to be the best economy seats ever. And the meals on JAL economy are superior to ANA PE.

    I'm a die hard 777 fan, so any flight on a 777 is amazing to me. The premium economy seat you had would outweigh the "bad" food in my opinion. And that Japanese service and hospitality is just incredible. I would suggest you repeat the flight but go on a daytime flight to compare the product with the overnight flight. Also a bonus...flying into SFO, my absolute favorite airport. My money is on your gold status for the upgrade.

    Probably for valid reasons, the meal selection for any of their red-eye flights like this one is very spartan. Probably because they know historically a majority of the passengers will be asleep and skip the meal service. For a flight during the daytime, the meals are much better.
