@@fishingmad be careful there. Seriously well engineered reels, like the smaller size D.A.M. Quicks, are bringing much higher prices than they did, when new, in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Beyond that, newish "cheapies" seem to exceed their fair service life so easily and you don't get to check them out beforehand. Maybe a trip to Cash Converters could be a useful exercise.
I remember earlier last year I wasn't catching anything it was a terrible day so just for fun caught a heap of toadies, what is it they say small things amuse small minds 🤣
hey mate, i’ve been bass fishing for a few months but recently i’ve been getting into more saltwater fishing and your videos have greatly helped me. i caught my first flathead 2 days ago, measuring in at 64cm, i know it’s crazy lucky for my first flatty to be that big but anyway i am stoked. i also caught my first few whiting after watching some of your whiting fishing videos, keep doing what you’re doing. thanks Alan.
Wow thats amazing, Gee a 64cm fish is brilliant !! Thanks for the positive feedback, yeah we are out and about filming so plenty of helpful stuff on the way
I picked up a Daiwa bait junky combo just for a mate to keep at his place and catch the fish in his dam I was so impressed with the value for money you get a 3000 size reel spooled with 15lb braid a 1-4kg 7 foot rod that actually felt really nice and 3 packs of bait junky soft plastics such a good deal for $99
Yes thats the one. I got a few of these www.bcf.com.au/p/daiwa-bait-junkie-ultimate-combo-pack/M678617.html#q=Daiwa%2BBait%2BJunkie%2BUltimate%2BCombo%2BPack%2BEstuary%2B1-4kg&lang=en_AU&start=3
@@hanoitripper1809 yep that's it mate it feels very good for the money I wouldn't be surprised if you paid $120 for the rod and reel just by themselves the lures and line are worth over $50
Thanks 👍 Yeah cant be bait junkie grubs for $2 that's for sure. I'm pretty certain they sold out of them quickly. A few of my mates loaded up on them at that price
Finally Allan, thank you. Have been arguing with some mates over the pronunciation of snook, most of them pronounce it as "sn oook", i've tried to tell them to follow english language conventions, ie the way book, cook, look, took are pronounced. Great video mate, happy to get some credible evidence now hhaa.
Thanks !! No I have never fished Deep Creek, most of what I do now is traveling from spot to spot, so ill have to look into the one. But at this stage I haven't fished it. Where is that located ??
Its a creek system with various depths that is part of the lower Maribyrnong system. I'm really unsure on whats in it aside from eel. Its located in the northern part of the Melbourne district west of Craigieburn running through rural areas such as Yuroke, Wallan, Clarkfield, Sunbury, Bulla etc
Hey Al, can you do a beginner video on how you film and record your fishing adventures. tutorial for the people that want to try making fishing videos? Eg. Filming, audio, equipment. Not sure if you've made a video on this topic already. Thank you!
This video was recorded 3 weeks ago, at the time BCF had certain colours of bait junkies on clearance for $2. The screen shots were live footage. Cheers
Hadn't considered the fishing permit. Not sure that should be part of the $65 budget, especially in the USA since different licenses are required for fresh and salt water. $55 is going to be tough to get anything that's will last more than a season in salt water but fresh water it's possible.
Thanks !! Yeah we tried to include everything in the challenge to make it as realistic as possible for a beginner starting to fish. I think the licence is an interesting one as its so different in different states and countries.
Yeah, I watch the tides, water flow moons etc, however often I just go out and fish whenever I can. You can go crazy following each different element, it does help when you understand them, but just get out there as often as you can
Flatties can be a sluggish fish, you don't want to rush the strike. You need to resist the urge to strike with those subtle nibbles and wait until you feel some weight. Flathead engage plastics really well so you wont drop to many. All comes down to practice but they are an awesome fish to target with plastics
Great video Alan. I have more expensive gear and have been fishing at the same location for past 3 weeks and unable to get even a single bite. How do you do it?
Great project there, just illustrating that you don't have to always spend big buck to go fishing. Something I saw several times was the "memory" of the monofiliment bundled in with the reel/rod combo. When you cast, you could see the spiral loops of line that would hinder casting by causing flogging in the runners, something you don't see with braid. Is it worthwhile to use some of that footage in discussing fishing lines at some convenient point? ps. I'm 69YO, about to set sail alone for home (Australia), from Panama. How does the "older than 70YO" work regarding licence exemption in Victoria? Does your 70th birthday + 1 day qualify you or does it mean 71YO?
Most of it was filmed in Geelong, one small part was filmed in Queenscliff and I did the outro on the way home near the warmies. Purely because of the heavy rain and wind which made it really challenging to film. Cheers
St Helens has been a bit slow recently, since they did some commercial works in the area. Has always been a great spot for flathead, pinkies and trevally. If its quiet give Wangim a go. I usually just throw plastics and put out a pilchard there which has worked well
Hey Allan great vid! Keep it up. I’m going to be fishing down St Leonards Pier from 8am to 3pm and I’m targeting anything really. I’d love to see you there but if you can’t make it all good but what bait should I use I’m bringing 2 bait rods with simply just a sinker and swivel then a little bit down like 17cm down I have my hook.
Thanks !! im just up at Portland at the minute so I wont be local for a few days still. Good luck on your trip to st leonarsd pier. Good volumes of squid and whiting there at the moment. Youll see the squid ink on the jetty in the good areas to the left and whiting on the corner
Saw your video last night and went straight down to buy some plastics and set up my rod properly for the first time. Took the kids down to Lorimer st to fish at high tide this afternoon. Caught nothing. What could I be doing wrong?
I'm glad it inspired you !! Lorimar was fishing really well about a month ago, but as the water temp increases the bigger fish have gone to deeper waters. When things are going slow I will generally add some scent like s-factor, work the plastic slowly, and try fishing peak times such as tide changes and on mornings and evenings. I hope that helps
I only use swivels when bait fish, or when fishing offshore with lure clips for big fish. When using plastics I wont use a swivel as it adds weight and changes the swimming action of the plastic and if your not careful can ruin your guides. I will always use a FG knot or double uni
Hi Alan, thanks for a great and very informative video. I am planning on getting a spinning reel combo for around $100, do you have any recommendations for this price point? I've seen the Sienna Viper and Daiwa RS online and they both seem quite popular. Planning on fishing at the Grampians next month
When doing a "beginners" fishing video, could you please talk about then "when, where, and how" of fishing. For example, if fishing in a lake: - when is the best times of the day to fish (and why); - what should you look out for when deciding where on the lake to fish (shade, structures, current, wind, movement on the water, etc.); - what weather conditions are best for fishing (hot sunny days vs. cold & rainy days vs. mild overcast days vs. other conditions); - how should you change how you fish (different rigging, lures/baits, etc.) depending on conditions, time of day, characteristics of the lake; - anything else of similar relevance. This could also be done for fishing on rivers/creeks, fishing in bays/inlets/estuaries, fishing in salt water. Complete newbies (like myself & my daughter) have no idea about this stuff - but I know it can make a HUGE difference. Thank you for your excellent videos.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate the comment and feedback. I have another beginners video on our channel which shows a lot more about technique you can see that here ruclips.net/video/T2zq7GxmngA/видео.html in terms of times, tides, conditions its really challenging to piece that in a video as every location and system is different. When we do our usual videos covering a location we will generally talk about the best gear, times to fish, techniques etc specific to that location. Eg Lakes are non tidal, some species fish best on sunrise/sunset some during the middle of the day when the water temp is at its warmest. We also have a members area which has very detailed and lengthy workshops for beginners on the gear to use, how to use them, how to target specific species, fish certain locations so a lot more detail on the when, what and how stuff. That might be worth looking into. Thanks
That's actually a lot harder then what it sounds. Cheapest rod and reel combos I could find for any of the fishing retailers was $34 which doesn't leave much room for all the other stuff. Would have to be like another K-Mart rod challenge to get under that budget.
@@fishingmad I caught a fish on a 25 dollar budget before, although I am exempt from fishing licences so that makes it a bit easier, the rod reel and line were 8 bucks and lures and hooks were 16 dollars. so all is possible.
I'd love to see a used gear challenge with items from marketplace, garage sales etc. Loving the videos.
