Sea of stars is an incredible spiritual successor to Chrono trigger. I really enjoyed the game, same as you. Really interesting battle mechanics, and it was fun using the turn delay moves to effectively block any enemy from taking a turn near the end game. I played Chained Echoes before SoS, and my next game is Edge of Eternity. Played either?
So after your first review I bought it and played for almost 5 hours.... I ended up returning it, because I couldn't stand the characters or the story. I felt like I had no motivation to do anything. The gameplay, music, art were all fabulous, but I was left hanging on the story :(
I genuinely mean this when I say this was one of the best game reviews iv ever seen on RUclips. I seriously think you should do more game reviews. Great job man.
Sea of Stars is one of my favorite games in recent memory. Period. Its very simple and fun. I do not need every game to be a "masterpiece", nor should any one. The music is great. The combat was fun and never bored me. The puzzles were a bit too simple, but they were still fun to solve. The sprite art is fantastic. If you haven't played it yet, give Monster Sanctuary a whirl. Fantastic monster trainer game with turn based combat, and side-scrolling metroidvania style exploration.
THANK YOU einbrecht! People go into games expecting too much sometimes, and I think that's happened a bit here. I'm checking out Monster Sanctuary now and adding it to my list!
@@mysidiaI think people are too accustomed to the amount of content large AA and AAA studios can churn out. They often forget salient details like indie teams are often quite small. 1 to 6 people in my experience. I think you'll really enjoy Monster Sanctuary. It is outright one of my favorite games of all time. An interesting take on the monster trainer format that I was not expecting to see... and it works! It even has a robust list of optional newgame+ modifiers. From randomization to perma-death! So you can really get unique playthroughs if you're so inclined. Permadeath is not my kind of thing, rather hate it, but I can understand why others find it appealing.
Yep! So many bangers on that OST. My favourite is either the Symphony of the Shadowed Hall, the Great Archives, or that one that plays in the jade mines!
Wow funny timing, I just finish my Sea of Stars playthrough as well a few days ago. I pretty much agree with everything that you say except for the story part, to me story is unfortunately the weakest part of the game, it's not a bad story but it's just not my thing I guess? and the extra stuff actually makes it worse for me which is a shame cause everything else is almost perfect level. It's very cool to see you do reviews like this, would love to see more for sure :D
Thanks dany, maybe I'm giving the story too much credit? I think I can guess the parts that people have problems with, or the character 😅. I think part of why I enjoyed it is that I typically do enjoy the super positive characters in games/animes haha
@@mysidia naaah I think we just have 2 different experience and theres nothing wrong with that. Dialogs are sometimes rough too but I dont want to say too much and taint peoples expectation going into the game haha.
If game reviews is gonna be your main thing I would probably create some kind of grading gimmick. Like a report card, different key areas and give them a ranking of 1-10 or something. Ex; Story: 7. Graphics: 5, so on and so forth. I kno you can make make a graphic or two 😂 lol. This way your guaranteed to hit all aspects of a game and any talking points there might be. Hope this helps?
Good call, I should come up with something. I like the report card idea since I'm a teacher, maybe I can just lean into that hahah. Appreciate the suggestion, very helpful indeed...... A+!
For me, the start of Sea of Stars, 10/10 loved it, the longer i played the more it dropped. I'd say it's a 7/10 maybe 8/10. A very good game but the weaker elements really dragged it down for me. I felt like the writing is too on the nose and had some of the same issues you had (oh look, good thing that vague prophesy I was told way back when makes absolute perfect sense for this specific situation) many of the emotional moments fell absolutely flat to me. There's some homages to phantasy star 4, chrono trigger and others that are really well done. Just wish the writing was a bit better and combat was a bit deeper.
What did YOU think of the game? Let me know below! Also... what should I play next?!
Not sure if you have a PS5... but... FF7 Rebirth? Haha

@@lockeheart5938 Unfortunately I don't have one!
@@Ashaman000 Agree Ashaman! I want to play Chained Echoes soon, but I have played Edge of Eternity. It's fun! A little rough around the edges though.

Wow, thanks! Honestly you're too kind! I think I have a lot I can improve on.

Great game. The music in this game is top tier. I'll be enjoying the music for quite a while.

I had no idea it was so cheap! Excited to give it a go!
Totally! No reason not to really at that price.
Great review man, keep up with the good work!
Thanks, will do!

Sounds good, I'll work on that

I think that's a fair assessment. at the end of the day, not every game can be a 10/10 so I'm happy with the time I spent with Sea of Stars.
