The Miami Heat have a big decision to make with Tyler Herro. The guard is up for an extension but do they really want to keep him around? If not, a trade could be coming and there is one team that makes a lot of sense for his future.

I don’t really understand this. The guy got drafted in the lottery to the Miami Heat and seemingly leaned in to the “South Beach, cool guy who knows other famous ppl and lives that sort of lifestyle” kind of image once he started to have some success. It’s smart to build a brand these days if you can, and he probably hired some ppl who help you do so once he started getting a lot of social media followers and started being recognized a lot. That’d be my guess.
I wish I could remember the interview now SO BADLY, but it was with an athlete. It popped in to my head while writing this, it was Kuzma. He did an interview with Draymond. Kuzma was drafted mad late in the 1st round, but obviously to LAL. He realized right away that even tho he was a later pick, he got drafted to a big market, and was a 4yr college guy not many ppl had heard of. He had that underdog appeal.
Being a late FRP on a team that went 26-56 the year prior, there weren’t much expectations. He didn’t start his first 8 or so games, and they started 3-5, but he had a few solid games and started the next 11g. He averaged like 18/7.5 on good efficiency and sort of leaned in to it. Had a 30/10 game, couple 20/10’s, etc.
He said something in the interview about selling merch really early on. I’m not gonna go back and watch bc it was long, but he made idk, maybe a couple to few hundred grand off that little merch pretty fast. His first year salary was about $1.4M. Take out taxes, (mad extra for being in CA) an agent, somewhere to live, all that stuff and it doesn’t go far. Once he saw he could make that kinda money his rookie year being basically a nobody, he realized how powerful branding is…and then investing etc.
Idk Kuzma’s story rly. I think he’s from Flint which isn’t that far from where I live and it’s not somewhere you wanna live. Idk Herro’s story at all. I’m sure it’s way different than Kuzma’s obviously. Kuzma played 4yrs at Utah, only had a cpl D1 offers I think. Herro was a one and done at Kentucky, drafted 13th to a team that was immediately good. He played real well his rookie year including in the playoffs, especially for a rookie. Up until the finals he was playing starter mins off the bench (33.2) and put up 16.5/5.5/4, and shot 37.8% 3P on 6.5att and 89.5% FT on 2.5att.
In the finals he started 5/6 games, 34.6MPG, and while his stats dipped (and of course his defense was trash) he still put up 14.7/4.2/3 and shot 36.7% 3P on 5att & 81.3% FT on 2.7att. Went to 6 games in the finals his rookie year and started 5, was def a huge contributor that whole season. Way more than anyone would expect for a rookie.
Idk when he was in that music video and all that, but he leaned in to the image, and after one of the longest seasons ever he seemingly partied it up, and got kinda “famous.” He had a strong brand. Super young dude. His year 2 regular season wasn’t as bad as ppl make it out to be. People expected a huge leap, but he mostly kinda stayed stagnant. Got a bit better in some areas, and it was the shortest off season blah blah. He laid an egg in the playoffs though for sure. Kind of a weird first two years for a rookie. The bubble, then the weird next season, all the off court stuff. But it seems like he’s learned from a lot of that stuff. Obviously he just had a terrible playoffs, but he continues to get better offensively and become more efficient.
Maybe that’s all he’ll ever be in the NBA is a really good high volume 3P shooter who can create a bit for himself and others, get to the rim a bit, the line, and put up points in bunches. He’s like what, 22yo? And just won 6MOTY. I don’t think anyone expected him to be a good defender when he was drafted. You’d hope by now he’d learn to be a bit better getting to the right spots, and navigating screens…but often times MIA uses a zone to hide him anyway.
An ideal outcome for him would to become a starting PG. Ideally being the smallest guy in the lineup, and continue to become a better creator for others. You’d like to see other people in the lineup who can pass well too so he can play some off ball, and maybe lead the second unit.
Regardless, having a strong brand is really good if you back it up on the court. In the playoffs the last cpl years he hasn’t, but in the regular season he can really fill it up and is a very good shooter at all 3 levels, mostly 3 ball and at the rim tho. Hopefully he can become more efficient and cut out some of those bad midrange jumpers, and at least slightly improve on defense. Barring injury though he’s going to be in the league for a very long time and make 100’s of millions of dollars. His brand definitely helps the earning potential.
Maybe he’s not an ideal fit for MIA. They have a guy in Lowry who’s really old at this point, injury prone, and is nowhere near the guy he was on defense anymore at all. Butler plays better with the ball in his hands, and essentially refuses to help space the floor. I love Jimmy. Awesome defender, can get to the rim, the line, his spot in the midrange, set other people up, etc. But if he was someone who could just take a few C&S 3s a game when he’s off ball, he’d go from perennial All-Star to perennial All-NBA. It really hurts to have both him and Bam not be able to space the floor. I’m not saying it has to be both, but it being neither is TOUGH.
Anyway that’s enough of a tangent. I don’t even rly like Herro lol. I’m not a MIA fan at all. I just think there’s nothing wrong with buying in to the off the court stuff. Kuzma did it and is making way more $ for himself. It took him a long time to realize what his role is on the court. It’s only been 4yrs of ball for Herro including NCAA. Kuzma played 4 at college. You still see him wearing that weird pink sweater and stuff. Hopefully Herro will find his place in the league…but saying he “chose fame” over something better life in the NBA is a joke. Do you really think he’d be some superstar two way player right now if he didn’t post on IG and do whatever it is that he does?
      That’s what I don’t get.

    • @BOnYTB
      @BOnYTB Год назад +7

@@mangobananana This is really silly. Miami may not win a ring in the next 4 seasons, but it’s not necessarily bc they overpaid Duncan Robinson by like $6M a year or something. He makes like $18M. If he made $12M, he’d be a totally fine guy to have off your bench that can shoot like 40% on extremely high volume from 3. Especially with the cap continuing to rise at a significant level.
If they don’t win a ring it’ll be because Bam didn’t progress enough, Lowry is too old, and they lost important role players like PJ Tucker.
A lot of championship winning teams have had overpaid players on their books. Tristan Thompson sure as hell wasn’t worth whatever he was making back then. There’s a difference between having someone overpaid that’s making like…12% of your payroll, and someone that’s making damn near 30% of it or whatever Russ is making.
Obviously it wasn’t a good contract. I’m not sure why they gave it out, especially when they’ve always been so good at finding guys like Max Strus, Caleb Martin, etc. i guess they underrated how big of an impact his bad defense would have in toughest rounds in the playoffs.
Also if they really need to get off of his contract in a couple years, they’ll be able to. It’s not like he has to be on the roster for 4yrs. His final year is like $19.888M or something like that with only $9.888M gtd. So they could waive and stretch him before his final year and instead of 9.888 on their books that year, it’d be 1/3 of that for the next 3.
Also since the last year is only half gtd or so, it makes it easier to trade than if it was fully gtd. If in two years they want to make a trade involving like Duncan and two 1sts for a solid player, that’ll definitely be an option.
GSW just won a ring. Wiseman is overpaid like crazy. He’s making like $10M or something and he doesn’t even play, but they still won a ring! Crazy!

How did he improve? He went from 37% to 31%, to 22% from 3 in the playoffs, *and* somehow his defense has also gotten worse year on year too (opposite of most young players).
Herro basically has the same defensive stats as old WestBrook. That’s good enough for a small market like OKC/Minn/NOLA, but not a team trying to be a real contender.

I disagree look up his stats every year more point, more minutes played, more assist, more rebound, can he improve his defense I think he can. Look at where Tatum was at at 22 vs Herro. Weather he stay or goes he is going to get paid. Pat Riley and Spo will make the best decision for the team. Look up his stats, you will see. Better than RJ since RJ has been in the NBA he’ll yeah. Would the Heat have been # 1 seed last year without him? No. Jimmy was hurt Lowry was hurt Bam was hurt. Herro got them to the playoffs. Could have done better but they were through more looks in transitions on him. He will have a big year and if the Heat does not sign him. I would go someone that leadership could value a good player. Time will tell.

@@kaleb324 basic year on year stats are meaningless except for superstars. For everyone else the advanced metrics are what to look at.
It’s like looking at Klay’s playoff performance during the Durant years. Basic numbers look like KD was worth more to the team. *But* the advanced stats show him as more efficient than KD on offence, and way more valuable 1v1 & help defence.
Then you look at this past playoffs advanced statistics where Wiggins, Porter, and *especially* Payton Jr were all more efficient & productive per/minute & per 100 possessions than Klay.
Then you can also look at Nerlens Noel, he’s been in the same defensive categories as “great prospect” Jarret Allen for the past 2yrs. Yet, Nerlens Noel is a barely 9mil/yr Center, who doesn’t pout when plays are not run for him on offence; and more specifically opposing players shoot *10%* lower when he’s defending them 1v1 or is the help defender.. That’s like going from LeBron’s +50% at the rim, to Westbrook & Herro’s ~40% at the rim.

It’s stupid to call the Heat stupid for “overvaluing” Tyler...he alone was not getting that Mitchell or Harden trade done. It’s obvious Morey and Ainge wanted way more for those players than the Heat had to offer. Of course the Heat would’ve traded Tyler for them, don’t be dumb. Herro has too much drama with his baby mama, and too invested in IG post instead for the past 3 years work on his atrocious defense. Miami thought the future was here, Bam and Herro, and this past post season they realized that Jimmy is still top dog, and whoever fits best with him ( Bam, Strus, Martin, Kyle/ Gabe) are the most successful line up. Herro might start the season and as soon as they loose a couple games they will start Oladipo or Max again.

    • @abarkins
      @abarkins Год назад +3

One of the highest shooting % in the league? He shot 37% last year. 36 is league average.
He can only do one thing, was barely above average at it, and is bad at everything else. He would’ve played himself completely out of the rotation if the Heat didn’t want to avoid tanking his trade value so they could dump his contract in the off-season. He never turned it around and finally gave the job to Struss much later than deserved.
And he didn’t kill Atlanta. He had a single ridiculous game 1 where he went 9/10. Obviously very impressive. But he was 2/10 the rest of the series.
Duncan absolutely has elite shooting talent but he’s always been short on confidence, so I guess it’s not impossible he turns it around. His first season he was incredible at almost 45% on high volume. But he has declined by a full 4% each of the past two years.
Last year’s version of Duncan should be nowhere near a NBA rotation.

But I agree his game is 1 dimensional and limits what he can do at the moment keep in mind the kid is really really young into his nba career.

It was his 44.6% first year that was special, and his 3 point proficiency that year more than made up for his limitations.
The Heat gave him the contract hoping he was closer to year 1 Duncan, but he actually ended up being much worse than year 2.
And he can’t just lab up being a good defender bc Jimmy is his teammate when he has none of the physical tools. He doesn’t have good lateral mobility, strength, or athleticism in general.
He’s 28 now. He’s only young into his NBA career bc of how old he was as a rookie. But he’s very far from “really really young.” If he was going to make any significant improvement on D where comparing him to a (non injury riddled) Klay wasn’t ridiculous, it would’ve already happened. Klay def wasn’t the most athletic guy in the world but he had a foundation that Duncan could only dream of.
We actually have seen Duncan improve on defense every year. He obviously works on it, but the improvements have been incremental and there won’t be any significant jump at this point. What you’ve seen is essentially what you’ll get.
I can assure Duncan will always be a negative defender. The path to him resurrecting his career is getting his 3 point shot back into the 42-45% range. That’s his bread and butter and the only reason he ever had a career.
Shooting a percentage like he did his first season created gravity towards him that stressed defenses and made them always have to pay attention to him at all times.
But if he’s just another 40% 3 point shooter, he’s a less well rounded poor man’s Max Struss.

I think the tyler situation is very complicated yes tyler didn't preform as well as expected but you can't just ignore the improvement from him in the regular season. I don't blame anyone who said that they should of traded tyler for spida but still it's not that simple there's still a good chance that Utah wouldn't have accepted the trade since new York and the cavs had picks which was utah was looking for and the heat didn't have any to give. Even if the heat got spida you keep the same problem if you have tyler which is very bad defense we saw spida get targeted by the mavs in the playoffs expect with spida you get wayyy better offense. The problem with the heat in the playoffs was injures and failing to meet expectations. Miami's x factor was that anyone could pop off Whether that be jimmy, tyler, bam or people on the bench they all popped off in the regular season but when they met Boston in the playoffs no one really did besides jimmy and bam sometimes. Jimmy Kyle and tyler were all hurt, and I'm not making excuses for kyle and Tyler's bad play but at least with tyler there were games where did decent but in general he didn't live to expectations that playoffs. It's still not over for tyler at all he is a hard worker, to me there are three options for tyler either get good defense, get consistently good at offense against any type of defense both good and bad. Or he could improve both. This year is the year that tyler proves if he's a superstar or just a good option off the bench

Also, the team is comprised of Jimmy carrying everyone, Bam giving good defense and some offense, maybe Hero or Lowry or Oladipo get hot, and just a bunch of guys. Besides Jimmy, the Heat haven’t attract any big free agents since Lebron was there. I hear that every great player is going there, I’ve see photoshops Giannis, Luka, KD, Harden, Dame, etc. in Heat jerseys, yet none of them came. Their big free agent signing is an over the hill Kyle Lowry. Riley drafts very well, I’ll give him that and Spo can develop young talent. However, it’s clear that Pat values his home grown talent too much.
I hear people talking about the Heat culture like it’s the Warriors culture and they are nothing alike. The Warriors have built young stars and attracted big free agents and won titles. Winning with Lebron doesn’t mean anything to me about how good your team culture is. Lebron won with Dan Gilbert and Jeanie Buss as owners in 2 different clown show organizations. For me to believe your culture is that great, I gotta see a non Lebron title. And yes I know they won in 06, but I want something more recent.

I think if Herro is good enough to get the starting 2 spot, I think I'd give him a 4 year, $104M contract. Not quite the 4 year max, but I think that's what his true market value would be.

It's probably even generous for his most recent production but hey, the market is crazy. Rj getting a 100m deal was eye popping!

The Raptors are not an option. Guaranteed. They don’t acquire players who aren’t plus defenders. So that leaves Herro out.
