I learned it pretty simply as if you can hear the sound of or the “name” of the vowels (A E I O or U) as how you would pronounce them in the saying the letter aloud by themselves in the word, then that vowel is long. But for example if you see a word that has an ‘A’ in it’s spelling, in the pronunciation of that word out loud, you don’t hear an ‘A’ like you normally would say it when saying the letter A just by itself, then it’s a short vowel. It would sound like “ahh” rather than a hard ‘A’
As an American who went through the school system over here, I can confirm that while most 5th graders may not really know this stuff, they are actually expected to. This is all part of their curriculum
I don't know, I went to several different schools in Arizona, and Illinois, both states vastly different from one another in their system and teaching. Arizona was far more laid back but suffers at being one of he worst states for schooling, while Illinois was a better state for schooling they added in so much unnecessary work it seemed entirely pointless many times.
I’ve looked through a ton of comments and haven’t seen anybody explain this, but the question about the “long vowel sound” is actually a simple question for a 5th grader but I could understand why it may be confusing 😅 in elementary school they teach us about long and short vowel sounds. The reason “like” was correct is because the “i” vowel is pronounced (eye) instead of (“ih” like in the word “it”). Basically, if you pronounce the vowel like you are saying the letter, it’s a long vowel. Other examples of long vowels; Late, coat, meet. 😅💖
Not a teacher, just an American and English nerd.. I did know this, but seeing it anew I think it SHOULD have a different name, because it’s imprecise. Our language is already hard enough to learn! Not that the name will change, but I’ll silently judge “long vowel sound” from now on, lol. That was a good explanation though, you seem like a good teacher.

As a native speaker thank you for this comment haha
As non native speaker I know these terms as pronunciation of type A and type B.
searched for this one, thanks from a non native

This is all part of their curriculum
seriously flawed system. what is going on down there??
straight hell over here, like i know things and nothing at all as well
I don't know, I went to several different schools in Arizona, and Illinois, both states vastly different from one another in their system and teaching. Arizona was far more laid back but suffers at being one of he worst states for schooling, while Illinois was a better state for schooling they added in so much unnecessary work it seemed entirely pointless many times.
nah this is heavily dependent on your area. a lotta this i either wasn't exposed to at all, or taught at least later into middle school
Nah I honestly think they picked questions more specific on the wide topics kids are actually taught but maybe I’m wrong

Okay but they’re still right about America, speaking as an American 😂
Sean said it was Hungary. Felix took over and got it wrong for both of them.
13:13 Genuine excitement from correctly answering a 5th grader question... priceless ...very relatable 😆
😅💖
Bruh your comment looked like a bot comment in a quick glance
@@Milfappreciater Uh...
Damn, english is so fucking dumb
So this is why english sounds weird to me, it's long vowels' fault all along!

@@seej.19 absolutely false. We don’t want to use imperial, we have just used it for a long time and it’s integral to our infrastructure (16 inch studs, etc.) and imperial works better in daily life. Scientifically, metric works better.

11:47 honestly 5th graders would not get this one because in the U.S we don’t learn this until 8th grade because we take a field trip to Washington DC and go to those places so it’s fine that you would get that because 5th graders wont

Felt like Jack needed this. We all needed this. Thank you for making us feel smarter than 5th Graders!
Them taking "long vowel" so literally made me CRY
What its suppose to mean "long vowel"
@FnD4212 when the vowel is pronounced in the word the way pronounced on its own. For example, "dog" does not have a long vowel, because it's pronounced d-aw-g. "Pine", however, does because the "i" is pronounced the same way its said on its own
The fact that pewdiepie searched “how old is a *_fith_* grader” even before they do the challenge adds so much to the video 😂
We don't have fifth graders in England, that's probably why he didn't know, I didn't know either for the same reason. Year 6 is 5th grade in England.
I don't think they call it 5th grade in sweden
For the two above me who didn't get it, it's because of the misspelled 'fifth'
Not everyone uses "grades". We use "years" which is much simpler.

Hilarious to see how each country's education system is different. Like I'm from the Czech republic, the middle of Europe and some of the things they didn't know I was sure of and some of the things they answered right I had no idea of. For example the war of roses is something I remember because it was a big part of our english class and mentioned in history class both in elementary and high school.
Congratulations 🎉 I got something for you on my ongoing giveaway.
I also am from Czech I'm glad someone here mentioned about the War of roses it's a big part of my history 🇨🇿
But why do Czechs teach about some civil war in UK?
@@ladrok97 we learn about various important events all around the world, but about this particular war we learn in english classes (I guess it's so that we learn to use english with different topics that are still culturaly appropriate to the english language, like Shakespeare and stuff). In actuall history lessons, this war was mentioned but we didn't go into depth.

A "short i" sound is found in words such as sick, fix, milk, ditch, quick, zipper. The "long i" is the vowel 'saying its name' which words such as like, fight, bicycle, wife, right, pile are great examples. All in all the phonics lessons from when I was a kid really stuck with me, unfortunately 20ish years later I don't think much else has.
