The Tide's Breath: explodes and sinks 700 feet to the ocean floor
Fjord: "He was a tidy man; he certainly wouldn't have left things like this."
Yeah I was thinking that as well when Matt is saying it looks tossed. I mean, how do you tell the difference between tossed and shipwrecked lol.
@@JohnVanderbeck I guess they're would be slight differences, as ransacking a room wouldn't be as violent as sinking. But then comes the problem of the boat then sinking and throwing around that loose stuff even more.
@@Darknova67 Exactly, like after ransacking drawers would be pulled out, or turned upside down and on the floor. In a violent event affecting the entire ship, I guess all the furniture would be tossed and piled up in one end of the room as either the motion or the water swept them up.
@@JohnVanderbeck To be fair, in most ships (and smaller private boats), even so far back as the 1500's, the furniture was mostly nailed down or even built in, so that it wouldn't be moved around in severe storms, the same is true to this day, most stuff is either nailed or welded down. Most drawers would have a notch in it where you had to lift it or wiggle it to be able to open it, most cabinets would usually have a small hook on the inside which would be moved with a finger through a hole, instead of having a knob to open them.
So even with the explosion, which would have happened in a different part of The Tide's Breath, the captain's quarters would probably just have been slightly messy, and not completely tossed.

I love how heavily fjord relies on cad's perception. "Duecy, what's goin on brother " 😂😂
I think Fjord very often relies on his party to do things, maybe this is good character roleplay as Fjord is only just starting to become confident in his abilities which he got only a few months back or maybe it's just Travis wanting to let people have some spotlight for the things they've built there characters for.

I didn't know that Nott actually becomes immune to being frightened by getting drunk. I thought this was only a RP thing Sam does for fun. "Liquid courage" got a whole new meaning now😂
that is the actual meaning of liquid courage
But it IS a roleplay aspect. Nott DOES literally become immune to being frightened when she's drunk, but that is still very much a personal aspect of the character, not a game mechanic.
@@robinnelsen7869 - Giving it a mechanical effect is a homebrew. (So is disadvantage on ability checks; the mechanical cost for this which makes it not something you want to go looking for RP excuses to do.)
So it's a homebrew game mechanic, invented to support RP of this character.

@@g80gzt You can get identify as warlock but only with pact of the tome and the book of ancient secrets invocation.
@@brittanyanderson97 Well Fjord is pact of the blade. But Caleb totally could’ve just cast identify lol, but what they did was cooler.
@@JohnW-yv6yp Also I think Identify would not have told them anything they didn't already know or deduce. They know it has to do with summoning (because the magic was conjuration) and that it requires blood (due to presence of old blood). If identify was cast it probably wouldn't tell anything they didn't already know but that would be at Matt's discretion as the DM.
Also they found out what it did in the end anyways (making storms).
@@brittanyanderson97 That’s a good point.
I will never stop loving how expertly the transition was between Yasha's sword and Molly's Grave. Punctuated by "Roll the Dice" and the serenity of Cadeuces in his grove following the pan of the grave was so incredible. Kamille and Kevin Areopagita created a magnificent piece of art that towers over show intros with 10x the budget.
I didn't catch that 'roll the dice' was timed on Yasha's sword pierce as well as on Molly's grave. Those together add so much weight and power to the moment. As well as that it can all come down to one dice roll to either put the final blow in the enemy or players.
OH MY GOD I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT ;-;
How about fjord hitting the water and the start of the song.

Oh wow.
there's a lot of really great small details like that, which are only there for a frame or two. i think my favorite is traveler's hand appears breifly when Jester is a child. But you can also see Caleb using spell components, Yasha's hair and eyes change color when she activates necrotic shroud, the Stormlord in the clouds as the lightning flashes, Beau holding Caleb's shoulder while he's looking through Frumpkin's eyes, etc.
oh, and in that last scene, all of the characters are arrayed before Matt in the same format that the players sit at the table.
People during campaing 1: "Man, i feel like Travis has such great ideas but never says anything because of Grog's intellegence"
Travis this campaing: Yeah let's make a blood sacrifice on the bottom of the ocean, on a place full corpses called "The Diver's Grave", that's brilliant!
They’re very stupid. This is known.
Liam is playing a character that is willing to push every button that can get him closer to his end goal while Travis knows that it is a bad idea but wants to see what happens when the button gets pushed.
You may have noticed that Travis is always pushing everyone to push all the shiny buttons Matt puts before them... not really caring what it does, only wanting to know. Caleb pushed the button in order to get a promise from Fjord because, while he does like the rest of the party, he is still using them to achieve his own ends.
If their is a button, Travis has to push it

Caleb really went most of that combat at less then half hp in a party with two clerics
One cleric and a half, let's be honest.
@@Shornaal13 Well all clerics can heal but they are not healing focused unless they are a life domain cleric. 5e is designed so that healing is intentionally sub par compared to the damage dealt so that you can not just have one healer focus healing and keeping up fully with the damage of the attack force. Most of the time it is just better to use healing word and get people up from 0 than to try and heal every bit that gets dealt since you overall are going to lose ground and spell slots.
What got me was Caduceus healing Beau over Caleb and Jester asking Nott if she needed healing. Like, did you guys forget that Caleb went to zero? 7 hp is asking for another one hit KO. :c
@@mentalmaker03 Its actually the better choice. As long as Caleb had one hp he'd be able to do all his wizard stuff just fine. Beau was in danger of being taken out by a good series of multi-attack rolls. Giving the tank a little bit more of a buffer isn't a bad idea.

I use Mind Whip & Mind Sliver on my gem dragonborn bladesinger 👌
Omg Nott in the intro drinking from her flask the same way Sam does
The giant flask is supposed to be a reference to Nott.
I love how easily scared Travis is when he's the largest and most intimidating person at the table.
That’s the thing about us big guys, tend to be loveable giant teddy bears
I picture Caduceus as like a hippy guy that grows his own weed. Like complete 60s vibes, round sunglasses, peace symbol, and everything lol. Especially with his character doing thing like talking to plants to feel the vibe, calming emotions, and shit like that haha. Pretty sure if tie-dye was a thing in Exandria, Caduceus would rock it.
I like how nott and caleb are always conveniently close in initiative order
Oh heck. I'd seen the intro before without any context and I thought it was really cool, but it hits hard now that I've come to love the Nein.
Molly's grave (with the raven I have now decided to headcanon as Vax) was a gut punch.
I think that's *everybody's* headcanon
Molly's grave is always a gutpunch, every time......
Its not headcanon, it is canon. And hes making a stop on his way to visit keyleth on that hill.
The raven is really the part that gets to me. I love Molly but i was only with him for a few episodes. 115 with Vax...
the raven symbolizes Raven Queen, it could be vax since he is one of her followers, but it could also just be the Raven Queen doing her job.
"Things tend to live."--Clay
Life needs things to live, after all
life, uh, finds a way - clay

When a DM gives this look you know you’re fucking something up.
His blinks were close to audible.
Holy crap.
I’ve been binging the series and haven’t gotten over and been in denial of Mollys death since it happened and seeing the tribute to him in the animation made me teary eyed. Beautiful job with the entire thing.
Long may he reign 👑
I had watched the animated intro soooo many times, and I’m finally invested and making my way through campaign through in between episodes of 3, and I got soo annoyed at myself on how I never connected that molly wasn’t in the intro and clay was
@@jamesdelaneywhelan9255 he's in the intro.... just really hard to see through all that dirt!
@@moarblood5120 ouch🤣
It's honestly so amazing they included that in the intro. The memory to their lost friend lives on even if the character is no longer there. He wasn't forgotten.
The NEW INTRO!
Almost teared up at tribute to Molly
Sammmmeeeeee
Hit me right in the heart, just sucker punch. Loved it but uunf
I literally started sobbing I can't even make this shit up
Yup now everyone at work just gave me a funny look since they know I'm watching CR
It’s funny the reason I got into Critical Role was seeing the new intro just randomly and I got so interested and the first time seeing the Molly tribute was just confusing to me and now it was a roundhouse kick right to my feels.
I dont think Nott has ever failed casting THL must be due to the top notch jokes sam makes
No, Nott failed hideous laughter a few times. (or rather, the opponents saved)

Travis: knows nothing about sailing and boat terminology. Gets easily spooked and uneasy OoC by scary settings.
Also Travis: *Plays a sailor with an eldritch, lovecraftian deity for a patron*
Laura:"Just don't do the Ring girl".
Matt:*does wrost*
There's a whole new intro that people could pay attention to, but I say that we all pay attention to Tal's amazing hair instead.
I mean look at that volume. Ugh I love him.
I came to the comments not to say I how catch up but hiw amazing Talesin’s look is in that episode! Hope he rocks more mohawk with stubble
‘Tis very amazing
I wanna know what product he used cuz this never happened to me
I love how none of them had the idea of "ah this table conjures elemental stuff and a bunch of ships have gone down due to storms... wonder if that's connected"
That gives it so much legitimacy, though. The answer was clearly right in front of them, but they didn't see it. If they'd completed the ritual and the ship sunk, it would have felt 100 % justified. Because of course that's what the old magic elemental conjuration table does in the middle of an area know for it's mystic storms. (Not that I caught it either).
Combination of low roll on the arcana checks and thinking into the wrong direction. Caleb was repeatedly speculating that it might be something similar to the temple on snake island, Fjord didn't think so because of the missing receptable for the eye orb, but seemed also to think about a connection to his patron. The others simply didn't pay any attention to the runes. What bothers me more is that they gave up so easily on finishing off the ship-sinking hag they had already beaten to her last hitpoints and left both without solving the problem and properly pillaging the treasure.
@@chrisrudolf9839 never underestimate laziness also it's the funny point that they almost destroyed their ship and after the fact they're like "oh. well that was fucking close"
@@chrisrudolf9839 Yep, very annoyed. You've got SEVEN people down there and a cave full of coin, and ONE person fills ONE pocket with mostly COPPER!? And you know, MAYBE you want to kill the SEA bitch in the BERMUDA TRIANGLE!! Seems like a perfect time to fireball the whole cave after your party is out.
@@chrisrudolf9839 I think that most of them are of the opinion that a failed check should stay failed, if they fail to persuade someone they don't try and word it a little differently to try again (Unless you're Beau or something) and when they do try and roll again without a very good reason Matt usually shuts them down. They could have spent a long time searching for the sea hag but they've shown time and time again that they're not heroes, they're people who want to get what they need and not much more
I have to say the way the cave encounter was set up was absolutely genius. The sea shanty vaguely hinting at a angler fish kind of creature. The cave that players are suspicious of almost expecting it to be a mouth. In the end it’s something entirely different.
1:34:15 [after the marching order was decided as yasha and cad together, nott and caleb together and jester, fjord and beau together]
liam: "its like the beginning of the campaign"
sam: "and it will be the end"
The best bit of that new intro (new for me, I'm only just up to this ep now) is the part where Yasha thrusts her sword down and it cuts to Molly's cloak tied to the stick, blowing in the breeze. So moving. Had a genuine little tear at that moment. Thanks CR for making these characters and world feel so real.
So awesome! The Raven was a fantastic touch as well.
Genuine not little tear here - I was gross sobbing on the streets
hahaha, you cried, weakling, i am far too manly to cry
**Cries**
Not to mention at that point, the lyrics say, "Take a chance, roll the dice."
@@OneTrueBelmont I didn't make that specific connection until I saw this comment. Owww my heart hurts now.
Travis' reactions just give me life. He's so into the stories Matt weaves. Love it.
2:29:25
Matts face when they start putting blood on the pedestal.
Then, Matt's disappointed expression when they decide to stop just short of finishing the ritual.
3:20:14
I just imagine Cad watching everyone else dodging the seaweed and being like
"wow good job you guys yeah nice.. wait"
*glances over shoulder*
"oh shit!"
*Cad is grappled by seaweed*
Laura Bailey screaming angrily is the most badass shit ever.
:D
Caduceus: begins to talk to plant matter/kelp/fishes/trees etc
Travis: _giggles in schoolgirl_
All the little ways that Matt will give away info on the bad peps stats while in fights to help the group while not being obvious about it is really cool. I can imagine some DMs just saying "miss" then moving on, but not Matt. All the "Just misses" or "Just hits" with out right saying stuff. Love it Matt.
I never once notices Beau blushing in the intro as she’s looking at Yasha 🥺
Thank you for pointing that out! I also love that Beau is holding Caleb's shoulder in the cart while he's looking through Frumpkin's eyes
@@Revolos55 Some other details that I thought were cool:
- Caleb hiding behind a pillar during the mimic scene and immediately starting to cast some fire spell as soon as the mimic transforms, while everybody else seems to be barely paying attention (also the fact that caleb is wearing the glove of blasting in various scenes in the video)
- Nott doing Sam's flask-wiggle while she's drinking in the cart.
- The Traveller's green hand that appears in Jester's bedroom after he boops her on the nose with the chalk (and the drawings on her wall of her with the traveller)
- The outlined symbols that appear above the DM's book are the dice D20 -> D4
I only noticed it at the end of the episode, it was so cute!
The idea of Fjord and Beau panic-singing Under the Sea and random Little Mermaid songs is amazing djfk
7:15 the first time I saw this intro I (and everyone else in twitch) lost their ENTIRE SHIT. it was a sight to behold; the animation was extravagant and more than 40 episodes later it still gives me chills to watch every Thursday!!! :D
So is it Thursday yet?!
I found it when I was still watching the CR-C2 fan animations and hadn't started the series proper yet. Must've watched it three or four times in a row because of how amazing it was--big part of why I finally decided to watch. I wanted to get to know the characters and their stories. Plus, I was working on an animation project for a class at the time, so I used it as inspiration--work hard enough, and THAT is the result!
I loved the intro! My favorite part of it is actually the ending with Matt standing there with his book and I just pictured him saying "Come...let me tell you a tale, take a chance and roll the dice, because after all...it is your story."
I really like how all the characters coming from the book he holds are ones the guests have played. Such a nice touch
The octopus helmet Caleb made, absolutely ingenious i love this man
