I remember grinding for hours on end in Thousand Year Door to reach the bottom of the Pit of Trials. Finally, after a very lucky run, I reached the last level and was rewarded with sweet sweet vindication, as I had predicted that the bone dragon would be at the bottom. I paused the game real quick so I could tell my brother I finally got to the bottom. In my excitement as I returned to my room, brother in tow, I freakin tripped over the extension cord and unplugged the Game Cube.......you can imagine my reaction. I was devastated, I never played the game again.........good times

@@willkaan9837 Such moments are extremely rare that they barely qualify.
It doesn't help that they made him _completely silent_ ever since Sticker Star.
Like, the only sounds we hear from Paper Mario now are just "arm flailing" and "jump".

He tried to stop Bobby the Bob-omb from killing himself to save Olivia and when he blew up, he shed a tear and put his hat over his face to cover him crying.
In a weird way, I'm kinda OK and used to that -- he's like your eyes, with the rest of your cast responding to what his effect in the story is.

I guess I'm the only person who was pretty underwhelmed by Bug Fables. I'm probably a bit over half way through and have no desire to finish it.
@@ragreenburg you're the first person I've heard say that. I thought Bug Fables was amazing and the puzzles and battles were even better than TTYD although it couldn't quite stack up to the humor most of the time... I think the story has a great ending too if you decide to give it another chance. Also try playing with the hard mode medal on that is a fun challenge!!!
@@sbkeel5639 What got me was frustrations with the puzzles that stemmed from having to throw the boomerang at something but the characters move in such a way that it would take multiple tries just to line everything up. Who knows though, maybe some day I'll do it. I know I just finished up the bee hive area.

The beemerang puzzles can get annoying sometimes because the trajectory resets unless youre at an angle. I got use to it, but man the battle system and character charm made me fall in love with this game.
Thousand Year Door is still one of the greatest RPGs ever in my mind!

@@BogusLettuce It's good, but i wouldn''t say it's the best. The coolest thing it has going for it is the multiple endings, but the combat is pretty much the same the entire time. Once you've played through it once, it's hard to keep yourself interested past the first playthrough, and aside from that, it doesn't really have anything else that really stands out.
Having two characters use a move together is cool, but it's not anything that hasnt been done since, and better. It was definitely great for it's time, i'll say that.

I wish they'd rerelease the first one for Switch. Hell, throw in 1000 year door too since I missed out on that one. The N64 one truly was a masterpiece.

@Sidney J. Duffy True, but who knows how long it would take for Nintendo to decide to re-releases their games if at all. And if they decide to have remake it, there is a strong chance it'll be altered in ways that don't match the originals.
And sometimes it's impossible for games to be re-releases or even ported because of law reasons. So it's either emulator or bust.
If Nintendo thinks I'm just going to keep shelling out cash everytime they rerelease the same games I've been playing since childhood, they're absolutely right.
And I DO emulate them in between releases, but paying for them is how I justify that internally.
I find it a little funny that y'all are talking about re-releases and emulators and I could totally just pull out my N64 if I want to replay the original Paper Mario lol

I bought a copy of TTYD from Target when they were getting rid of their GCN stock for like $3. It’s currently going for about $90 on eBay. So glad I jumped on that one. 🤷🏽♂️

All I know about Paper Mario is that my Friend is a big fan, and cooking a cake for 4.5 years is perfectly acceptable.
Say "I can't believe that even though we mentioned the crossover in our Ace Attorney Honest Trailer which we did THREE YEARS AGO we still haven't made an Honest Trailer for the Professor Layton series"
Personally, when mentioning that the boss fights in Origami King are against office supplies, I would've said something like, "Because being a paper doll, Paper Mario is extremely vulnerable to scissors, hole punches, and whatnot...yet is perfectly fine submerging himself in hot water in the same game."

Ah Super Paper Mario I remember once when you used to be the Black Sheep. Now you're the last good title the series ever had. Seriously Nintendo stop being so damn protective of your IP and let Intelegent Software make the game they want to again. If they're too busy making Fire Emblem games just give the task to Retro or those Bug Fables guys. They really seem to know how to read a room.
@Sidney J. Duffy No doubt but just imagine if Nintendo hadn't restricted them? They need to stop being so damn overprotective of their IP's. Try the SEGA approach instead, and let the fans make whatever they want to make that's my motto. If it's bad then ban it on a need by need basis. 1st amendment and all.

Duffy Origami King was really boring and way too easy :/ I didn't even get to solve any puzzle bc if you made 1 mistake the game would solve it for you 😒 also to me the magic of the paper mario series was that you had to talk to the ingame people and maybe even go back to progress.... Yeah nothing like that happened in Origami King. Also I won't even mention how useless all your side characters were, especially Olivia.

OK wasn't as good as any of the first three, but the story was good, if short and a bit too linear. Most of the issues with it were, IMO, some poor world design choices, specifically that the lack of new abilities meant you had very little reason to go back and re-discover old areas.
Do you think oragani king is worth getting? I'm thinking of buying it, or maybe Yoshi's crafted world. They've both been on my radar for a while.
The biggest problem with Origami King is that it is held down by expectations of what a Paper Mario should be. It's an amazingly fun and inventive game in its own right.
I agree as it s own game it s fun the reason it falls back is because it has the paper mario name on it
When I was a kid, I thought the Paper Mario universe was created by a bored kid doodling in the middle of class.

He does mention it is an "alternate/parallel world" but it is still never explained why that storybook has an actual world in it that runs parallel to the "real" mushroom kingdom

Super Paper Mario is one of the best Mario games imo - such a good story and writing
Fun fact: The reason why Super paper Mario was so different was because it was going to be on the gamecube, the same console as TTYD, so they changed it up a bit for the one game before trying to go back to the classic formula, but we all know what happened after that

They decided to make it a little bit different and keep the rpg roots because, like I said, it was going to be on the gamecube, a console that already had a paper mario rpg on it. Miyamoto had nothing to do with it. Sticker star though? Yeah he ruined that game, that one was his fault.
What is remarkable is that the origami king address this "all toad are the same." It is even one the reason of the main villain.
But as you play you remark that generic toads have their own personality and are different from one and other.
Except, when you think about it, the arts and crafts trilogy is kind of TTYD's fault too.
When polled, paper mario fans said they didn't like the story and characters, and wanted something more like TTYD. So they (mostly) removed the story and the unique characters, and brought back the other things that defined TTYD: turn based combat, and paper mechanics (e.g paper airplane).

Actually, the whole "paper world" thing was explained in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam revealed that the Paper Mario world exists in a book, so... yeah, paper.
But really, the series has taken a massive nose-dive. The first one was great, truly spectacular. The second one was even better. The third one had a great story on par with the first two, but battles and stuff dropped. All the others were just one letdown after another. Fun, sure, but nowhere near the standard of the first two (even the first three).

@@ViewerOnline101 My problem with this is that any crossover with different Mario sub-franchises are likely to be non-canon (as many crossovers tend to be), or is more on the modern interpretation that wasn't there at first.
At least in my headcanon, the "universe" of the Classic 3 are the same as any Mario game (including Mario & Luigi), as some elements from them did carry over to other spin-offs. Meanwhile the Modern 3 is set in a diorama, with a Mario fan probably controlling everything (I mean how do you explain real-life objects like an electric fan).

I did not feel like the 3D flipping got tedious or boring in Super Paper Mario. That one's my favorite of the series. (I didn't bother getting any later Paper Mario games after that because they didn't look fun to me, so I've only played the first three.)
Exactly. If you went into it expecting a traditional RPG, yeah you'll be disappointed, but that's not the game's fault. It's genuinely one of the best Mario titles on the Wii, with a some great storytelling, an interesting setting, and unique puzzle solving mechanics we'd never seen before in the series, that were done pretty well. I played the crap out of that game in high school.
Nintendo really needs to go back and try Super Paper Mario formula again. Without the limits of the Wii-remote, they can have a real combat and leveling system.
@@ligtningdog6399 Actually, having platformer-based combat instead of turn-based combat is one of the reasons I liked Super Paper Mario so much more than the first two Paper Mario games... But they still had all of the other staples of a Paper Mario game... Companions, story, etc... In general, I don't bother getting games with turn-based combat anymore. It interrupts the ability to experience everything else too much and is never the part of a game I personally enjoy.
@@thajocoth No. I mean keep the platformer-based combat, just have one button for jumping, one for hammer attack, one for the partner skill and, probably have the shoulder buttons switch partners/characters. And when you level up, you can choose to either upgrade your hammer strength, your boots strength, or a new skill.
The problem with the Wii-remote is that after a while, you have to keep pausing to switch either partner or characters because there was only 2 buttons.

I was timing to see how long before the video mentioned Bug Fables. You know, the indie game I'm hoping wasn't just made by fans to shove in Nintendo's face and be like "SEE? THIS IS WHAT WE WANTED!"

What? Super paper Mario I’d one of my favorite games ever. It’s so quirky, was meta before it was cool and the pixels were such an interesting tool progression system
Super Paper Mario was pretty much if they made an overhauled Zelda 2 with Paper Mario assets, which I love
How was it meta before it was cool many games and other media did a ton of meta stuff before that game. It was already cool before it came.
@Sidney J. Duffy there where the loony tunes that had alot of meta moments and story's. The first 2 paper Mario games that where meta. And many cartoons that didn't have a promblem with breaking the fourth wall the whole episode.

Hey Nintendo, ever thought of...I dunno...making a sequel in the style that people have been asking for?

It's funny. Nintendo seems to alternate between releasing the same exact game over and over again (Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party) and forcing weird innovation that nobody wants (The last 3 Paper Mario games, Star Fox Zero, etc.).

Nintendo pretends they do things for the fans but really they are super bull headed and just shove whatever idea THEY think is good and just sit back and let the few shills they have fight for them while the majority of people look at it and go "meh... not impressive"

Do you know playing both thousand year door in super paper Mario. I haven’t really played the others, but have watched/heard what the rest of the the series did. I still say Super Paper Mario is still a good paper Mario game
You should play one if you get the chance. I played it years after TTYD and still really enjoyed it. It also has a really unique visual style compared to all future games

I honestly thought that Super Paper Mario looked to be the best of ghr Paper Mario series. A unique game mechanic combined with a compelling story and memorable characters.

Super Paper Mario almost carried everything but the way you attack -- only big differences are FP and Badges are no longer there, and maybe the upgrades for Jump and Hammer (although it's unnecessary as you already raise attack by level up and other obstacles are solved by other means).

@@HeilRay Yeah, it's mostly set in other dimensions -- it could've been nice if we saw Toad Town for example being destroyed, and other set places, seeing they had the TTYD assets there, but most of the interactions between the main 4 makes it feel that it is the continuation of TTYD IMO.

I mean, worldbuilding wise it did in the form of Paper Mario, and later Mario & Luigi -- gameplay wise, maybe, but it did carry a lot of elements like HP/FP (Bro P)/Badges.

Really feels like it's leaning to what the fanbase has been recently thinking for this video (before TOK came out). Many fans didn't think Super Paper Mario was bad until recently. Personally, I thought The Origami King was pretty great. Even better than the 64 one. (Which I loved) And the partners are already OP in TOK anyway after Bobby. If you're good at puzzles, you don't really need them too often.

I haven't played Color Splash, but I have seen a Let's Play on RUclips, and the writing and humor is pretty much back up to par, even if the gameplay isn't. Sticker Star OTH I have played and is hot garbage.

I'll be real, I never understood the hate towards Super Paper Mario as a game. So many games get defended for "being a good game, just not a good [insert game series here]" but somehow SPM is excluded. I never got tired of the perspective changes and pretty creative stuff they came up with. Its only "downsides" if you're a fan of previous entries is it lacks a proper turn-based RPG battle system, but really everything else is just pure genius IMO. Minus world, Chapter 6-1, Mister L, the Pixls and even some of the powers.
This is IMO a cult classic that didn't get the recognition it deserved because it bore the Paper Mario name and is, I think, the reason Nintendo decided to make the stupid sterile Toad-filled sequels after its critical failure. Kind of a shame really !
