It sickens me to see such a phenomenal player leave the NHL in his prime. Kovalchuk is a top 10 player in the world. Arguably top 5. When he's on, he's an unstoppable force. His size, skill, and shot are elite. One of the best talents in the world. The guy needs to come back to the NHL. We miss you Kovalchuk.
Not a top 10 right now but no doubt he is an elite player and it does sicken me to see such a stud leave the NHL. I mean it is pretty much like a Sidney Crosby or an Alex Ovechkin in his prime leaving the NHL.
d4v1dfor3v3r so are you saying that crosby or ov were/are not top 10 players? your comment makes no sense.
wildcavemann I am saying this is a great player who is in him prime who decided to just leave the NHL.
MilesP777 I'm glad he decided back to Europe. KHL now much more interesting. GO CKA
Why would he come to the NHL when he can play at home
I don't care but he is one of the artists in hockey, its power, grace, and emotion mixed in a perfect way to create one of the greats of hockey.
Hot headed diva he is and should learn some sportmanship. Good scorer though.
Mostly highlights when he played for the devils. I happened to live in Atlanta during the Kovalchuk era and watched most of the Thrashers games. Since it was a franchise that got little attention, and he was on a team full of guys that shouldn't even make AHL rosters, I don't think people realize how incredible he was. Basically the shot and offensive instincts of Ovechkin, but a bit faster, bigger, maybe slightly stronger and a better passer. Also, very passionate and never took a shift off.
Easily one of the top 3 post-lockout to early 2010's players, if not the best, mostly overlooked due to the team he was drafted by.
I also lived in Atlanta when he played for the Thrashers and he just so happened to be my favorite player.
Giampaolo Fini hes not better than ovi though...
Hell yea
Well said brother, very well said. It is indeed such a shame that Kovy had to spend the majority of his career in Atlanta. He did have some quality company in Marc Savard and Marian Hossa (both pretty much in their prime at the time) for a few seasons. But yeah other than that, it must’ve been pretty frustrating for Kovy to be one of the most dynamic scorers of his generation, yet playing for a shitty Atlanta team year in year out.
I don’t think he’s necessarily stronger/bigger than Ovi, both of them are just absolute beasts in that regard - pretty much the same height & weight too. But yes, definitely a better passer - Kovy’s passing game has always been underrated - and a much more elegant player overall. As someone else in this thread already pointed out, Kovy has this unique aura about him. With Ovi it’s speed, strength, skill. With Kovy it’s speed, strength, skill AND gracefulness that not many other players possess.
Not to say Ovi is the lesser player, we all know he isn’t. But as a hardcore fan of the sport, a sucker for fine details like skating technique and playing swagger, I’d still rather watch Kovy play than Ovi. I’m actually checking up on Kings games regularly, just because my hero is playing for them these days lol. Sorry for this long ass read hahaha.. I just couldn’t help myself. I guess it’s the excitement from seeing people like yourself and others here, admiring Kovalchuk the way I do 🙂
He played with world class players like Savard, Heatley, Hossa and Kozlov in Atlanta. He didn't play on lines with the scrubs.
Teams come and go, and players remain. Does anyone remember a team in Atlanta? It was Kovalchuk's team!
Probably one of the best shots I've seen in hockey in the last decade. Incredibly fast release.
Kovi had his reasons. He missed home-- especially his family as his wife is/was a popular singer in Russia. He left some cash on the table to go back to Russia. It might never have happened if he play in the KHL awhile during the half-lockout year.
The lockout gave him a taste of playing in his homeland, where he is already worshiped. Who knows it could have planted a seed in his head and made the difference... enough for him to leave an historic NHL contract on the table.
Left some cash on the table? He's making way more money in Russia than in the NHL.
packers256
Exactly. His salary is even higher than his already astronomical salary in NJ.
packers256 reffee Wow i didn't know that, i guess the KHL has really grown in its power and clout globally. I'd be wary of drafting Russian players who may get homesick or want a bigger payday. I can see other players (hopefully not Datsyuk or Ovi) following suit in the future if the gap between the US and Russia continues to close.
If I was a worshiped national hero in my country, I'd probably too choose to stay here over NHL. I mean it's gotta be great for your ego!
Amusement73 Lower taxes make it the same money for Ilya but technically the club is paying less, i think. The KHL has come a long way in the past decade... it will never reach NHL but it's as close as you can find in the world.
God i miss him... Devils have been going so far down hill since the loss of Parise and Kovy..
And since Brodeur's 2011-2012 season
Every team has their ups and downs and one day the Devils will rise up again
I mean, that contract would have been hell now
in my opinion the most exciting player in the last 10-15 years, wish he was still in the show
@@56axe2 Ovi can literally score from one spot on the powerplay, that’s it. Kovy is a way more versatile player as he can do it all and score from anywhere.
@@thefives7arovi is the greatest scorer ever and unstoppable coming down that wing. He has the best one timer ever. Scored some of the most acrobatic goals ever, including the best goal in nhl history with „the goal“.
Stop it ovi is in a different league
Kovalchuk legend! Phenomenal player. If he had stayed in NHL, he would have made competition to Ovechkin easily!
Merci encore une fois!
Ilya is fucking awesome!
Bryzgolav?
Best sniper ever. That slapshot was deadly across the blue line
You're a hockey grinch if you didn't love watching him play. Gonna miss him. Hell of a player.
Ill never forget that punch at 1:20. I saw it on TV and I literally felt it.
Great hockey player. Much respect. From a Flyers fan.
With the Kings now....IMO Best player in the world.
Thanks Big! I love Shinedown!
0:40 awesome moment

ONE OF MY IDOLS AND HEROES
JOSALDINHO34732 U better find somebody else
+HockeyCZE hahahahaha lol
I remember watching him when the thrashers were still around one of my favorite players back then
I'm so sad to see Kovi leave :'( My favorite team is going to be stripped down so much over these next few years!
GREATEST VIDEO....EVER!!! AND YOU CHOICE THE BEST SONG, SHINEDOWN AND ILYA FOR THE WIN!!!! LGD!!!!!!!
probably the best devil ever in devils history
one of the most purely skilled players to ever play the game in almost every aspect, but obviously had some issues. sad to see such a talent go to waste.
Great Vid!
As a fan of the NJ Devils, losing kovy and parise was the worst this that could have happened to the devs. Kovy was a monster on the ice excluding defense. He was a shootout guru, and had hands of a god. Parise was just an all around beast. He loved the dirty areas. I loved these guys as hockey players.
same here Devils got destroyed after the year 2012
Kovy improved drastically on defense compared to his Atlanta days
very good video!
I love the music and the player I’m a huge fan of Shinedown and Kolvachuk
Love the video he's got everything in a ice hockey player
god do I miss watching this guy
god i miss this guy
He is an insanely good hokcey player.
He'll be back, remember Jagr?
Ehh Kovy and Jagr have completely different backgrounds but yes, he might come back.
packers256 Kovy will need the approval of all 30 GM's in order to return to the NHL. I highly doubt Lou (or whomever is in charge of the Devils by then) will say yes.
If he comes back he'll have to go back to the Devils and finish his contract unless the Devils wanna trade him..
***** He can come back without the GM approvals once he's 35+. Which may be 2018 I'm not sure off the top of my head but that sounds about right.
Danny Vazquez 2017 and wanted to come back
Kovalchuk makes the game look so easy, that's how you know how good he is. His last year in the league he basically powered New Jersey himself, the team literally couldn't operate without him on the ice.
as do i! they are fantastic live!!
Prototypical scoring winger, really the ideal skill set.
And one the best 2 way wingers
Thansk you too
Miss him.:(
Kovalchuk is a beast, too bad he left the nhl, he had his reasons tho
He still owns a huge plot of land in Northern NJ where he's having a house built. makes you think he'll be back. Without a doubt the most skilled Devils player since Gilmore and Molginy.
Merci!
Ohh, he is handsome and really good player ! (: Greetings from Finland c: (;
I can't agree more
He is one of the best. Shouldn't have gone to the KHL
I think his wife made him because she couldn't adapt to English or something.
He recently reported that he deeply regrets leaving the NHL and wants to try to come back for the 2018-19 season in pursuit of achieving The Triple Gold. It'd be perfect timing because this is the last season that the New Jersey Devils have his rights.
OMGitsSTORKY Im hearing the Rangers are prepared to sign him for 3 years on July 1st
not sure about that but he is definatelly returning to nhl next year
MultiNoNamex NYR is a destination that totally makes sense. Ilya might be that missing piece they've needed all these years to finally get King Henrik a Cup 😂
I miss him. I'm sure he had his reasons but after all thr Devils went through to keep him...
He is an idiot. Accept it.
Pyry Puustinen I did try to think he maybe was a "good" guy with a bit of a bad temper but i totally lost my respect towards him in the Finland Russia game where he slashed players on the bench and so on.
Pyry Puustinen Just to play devil's advocate (no pun intended), there was no reason to sign a 15-year contract, then.
i see him at MTL next years! first line Radu-Chucky-Kovalchuk
MY IDOLS AND HEROES
Song used for video is awesome!
Welcome to Montreal!!!! :D
Welcome back to the NHL
Good player.. Not like Datsyuk but a good stickhandler still. Fighter!
He's the best of ovi and malkin combined. Neither or them are as good as Ilya in his prime. Played on absolute garbage teams and still managed to put up numbers as the only guy the other team cared about. It was virtually 5 on 1 until Hossa got there. Then he had room to make plays on New Jersey but he had already had his best years and he was still an absolute superstar. Kovalchuk and datsyukwere the best players of the 2000s. Crosby, Lidstrom, Joe Thornton, zetterberg, St. Louis, the sedins, ovi, and getzlaf are the next tier for that decade. Maybe rick Nash too. Can't forget alfie. Brad Richards had some good years in there but no one touched Ilya and pav. Two unstoppable offensive players in their own unique way.
With the exception of Ovechkin, nobody else had a better shot and release than Kovy in the 2000s and early 2010s. Stuff of nightmares for a goalie.
IIya Kovalchuk. Is the best
0:48 incredible! 2:02 and 2:57 also
Say what you want about him as a person, but holy fuck was he a DEADLY sniper!
Is good.
goodbye Kovalchuk :( , KHL is calling.
but a great video!
I miss him. This makes me upset that the Devils are so bad right now.
trop bon avec cette toune la!!!!!!1
He realized his dream and won the Olympics (5th attempt - 20 years), now he will return to the NHL.
Wait for him in the season 2018-2019, most likely in New-York.
I wish the Thrashers were still a thing.
hello tim Murray fly to Russia with a blank check we have some of the best young talent in the nhl and need more veteran leadership on the sabres he would be a perfect fit! greetings from Buffalo ny
That Goal at like 1:39 is so simple but so NASTY!!!!
Love how the goalies didn't even move when he shot 5 hole on them
2019 🎤🎸🥁🥅🏒👊✌️👍
Good vid. Devils need him back ASAP or it doesn't look like they'll make the playoffs...
If the Canadiens get their hands on Kovalchuk they will win the cup for sure. Galchenyuk-Drouin is a good Crosby-Malkin combo and Pacioretty is a 30goals minimum scorer. Add Lehkonen who had 2 goals 2 pass during last year playoff and Byron who got a 22goals seasons and you got a winning team alongside of elite player Weber and Price and you got the legendary team they almost had last year (13-1-1).
You got two defensive-offensive players in Weber and Petry.
was one of the starts of the nhl till he left
Still it dosn't make him any worse.
Kovy over Datsyuk go ahead call me crazy Kovy is a pressure player so many overtime goals hes clutch
uhh idk about datsyuk but def malkin
Kovy is a work horse, Oveckin's size abd shot with datsyuk's dekes
with the fist of chara to or wat 1:18
Come to sharks 2018 :)
1:20 You just got knocked the fuck out!

The guy at 2.24 is Mic Mars from Motley Crew
