    It sickens me to see such a phenomenal player leave the NHL in his prime. Kovalchuk is a top 10 player in the world. Arguably top 5. When he's on, he's an unstoppable force. His size, skill, and shot are elite. One of the best talents in the world. The guy needs to come back to the NHL. We miss you Kovalchuk.

    • @d4v1dfor3v3r
      @d4v1dfor3v3r 9 лет назад +2

      Not a top 10 right now but no doubt he is an elite player and it does sicken me to see such a stud leave the NHL. I mean it is pretty much like a Sidney Crosby or an Alex Ovechkin in his prime leaving the NHL.

    • @wildcavemann

      d4v1dfor3v3r so are you saying that crosby or ov were/are not top 10 players? your comment makes no sense.

    Mostly highlights when he played for the devils. I happened to live in Atlanta during the Kovalchuk era and watched most of the Thrashers games. Since it was a franchise that got little attention, and he was on a team full of guys that shouldn't even make AHL rosters, I don't think people realize how incredible he was. Basically the shot and offensive instincts of Ovechkin, but a bit faster, bigger, maybe slightly stronger and a better passer. Also, very passionate and never took a shift off.
    Easily one of the top 3 post-lockout to early 2010's players, if not the best, mostly overlooked due to the team he was drafted by.

      Well said brother, very well said. It is indeed such a shame that Kovy had to spend the majority of his career in Atlanta. He did have some quality company in Marc Savard and Marian Hossa (both pretty much in their prime at the time) for a few seasons. But yeah other than that, it must’ve been pretty frustrating for Kovy to be one of the most dynamic scorers of his generation, yet playing for a shitty Atlanta team year in year out.
      I don’t think he’s necessarily stronger/bigger than Ovi, both of them are just absolute beasts in that regard - pretty much the same height & weight too. But yes, definitely a better passer - Kovy’s passing game has always been underrated - and a much more elegant player overall. As someone else in this thread already pointed out, Kovy has this unique aura about him. With Ovi it’s speed, strength, skill. With Kovy it’s speed, strength, skill AND gracefulness that not many other players possess.
      Not to say Ovi is the lesser player, we all know he isn’t. But as a hardcore fan of the sport, a sucker for fine details like skating technique and playing swagger, I’d still rather watch Kovy play than Ovi. I’m actually checking up on Kings games regularly, just because my hero is playing for them these days lol. Sorry for this long ass read hahaha.. I just couldn’t help myself. I guess it’s the excitement from seeing people like yourself and others here, admiring Kovalchuk the way I do 🙂

      He played with world class players like Savard, Heatley, Hossa and Kozlov in Atlanta. He didn't play on lines with the scrubs.

  • @bobshenix
    @bobshenix 10 лет назад +43

    Kovi had his reasons. He missed home-- especially his family as his wife is/was a popular singer in Russia. He left some cash on the table to go back to Russia. It might never have happened if he play in the KHL awhile during the half-lockout year.
    The lockout gave him a taste of playing in his homeland, where he is already worshiped. Who knows it could have planted a seed in his head and made the difference... enough for him to leave an historic NHL contract on the table.

    • @packers256
      @packers256 10 лет назад +12

      Left some cash on the table? He's making way more money in Russia than in the NHL.

    • @reffee
      @reffee 10 лет назад +3

      packers256
      Exactly. His salary is even higher than his already astronomical salary in NJ.

    • @bobshenix
      @bobshenix 10 лет назад +1

      packers256 reffee Wow i didn't know that, i guess the KHL has really grown in its power and clout globally. I'd be wary of drafting Russian players who may get homesick or want a bigger payday. I can see other players (hopefully not Datsyuk or Ovi) following suit in the future if the gap between the US and Russia continues to close.

    • @Pece17
      @Pece17 10 лет назад +2

      If I was a worshiped national hero in my country, I'd probably too choose to stay here over NHL. I mean it's gotta be great for your ego!

    • @bobshenix
      @bobshenix 9 лет назад

      Amusement73 Lower taxes make it the same money for Ilya but technically the club is paying less, i think. The KHL has come a long way in the past decade... it will never reach NHL but it's as close as you can find in the world.

    He's the best of ovi and malkin combined. Neither or them are as good as Ilya in his prime. Played on absolute garbage teams and still managed to put up numbers as the only guy the other team cared about. It was virtually 5 on 1 until Hossa got there. Then he had room to make plays on New Jersey but he had already had his best years and he was still an absolute superstar. Kovalchuk and datsyukwere the best players of the 2000s. Crosby, Lidstrom, Joe Thornton, zetterberg, St. Louis, the sedins, ovi, and getzlaf are the next tier for that decade. Maybe rick Nash too. Can't forget alfie. Brad Richards had some good years in there but no one touched Ilya and pav. Two unstoppable offensive players in their own unique way.

    Good vid. Devils need him back ASAP or it doesn't look like they'll make the playoffs...

    If the Canadiens get their hands on Kovalchuk they will win the cup for sure. Galchenyuk-Drouin is a good Crosby-Malkin combo and Pacioretty is a 30goals minimum scorer. Add Lehkonen who had 2 goals 2 pass during last year playoff and Byron who got a 22goals seasons and you got a winning team alongside of elite player Weber and Price and you got the legendary team they almost had last year (13-1-1).
