If I'm not mistaken, Christopher Reeve's rationale for gaining real muscle instead of using a padded suit was that Superman doesn't lie, and the padded suit would be a lie. That's how much he cared about the integrity of the character.

I remember an interview Hugh Jackman gave about filming The Wolverine in 2013. For most of the shirtless scenes, they did a lot of water restriction so he would look more ripped. In his fight scene against Sanada's character, he was so dehydrated that he was dizzy and kept accidentally stabbing Sanada with his prosthetic claws. Being pros, they got through the scene anyway. His physique is entirely possible, but is also terribly unsustainable, unhealthy, and un-fun.

"Thor: Love & Thunder" (2022) was worth seeing. For me the best parts concerned Gorr & his daughter, & Dr. Jane Foster's cancer. Those plot lines cross in the final scene w/ dramatic power. Many of Gorr's scenes hit the cutting room floor. Taika Waititi delivered a four-hour cut, & Disney cut it to two hours, including a ten-minute credits crawl & end-credits teaser. We saw half of the film, in other words. No wonder it was an incoherent jumble. (It's possible the other two hours were the same.)

But that doesn’t mean they were achieved naturally, it’s all about the timeframe they made these transformations in that makes it so clear steroids were used. It’s the people like Evans and Cavill who maintain their realistically attainable physiques between movies that I believe are natural they don’t go from nothing to 2-3 years natty lifting progress in a few months

The CGI teams can age or de-age an actor, & do the equivalent of plastic surgery on the face & body. In fact, plastic surgery is also probably used for some actors in some films. 9:33 you sorta skimmed the topic which i thought should be emphasized, and that is: in most of the shirtless scenes, the actors dehydrate themselves so that the skin becomes as thin as possible and sticks very closely to the muscles for better definition. it's an old bodybuilder trick before competition. they gradually decrease their water intake to the minimum level they need to... live, basically. and so, while the shredded look is impressive on screen, it's not realistically replicable for day-to-day look.

The Brits have a different scale for "fat" that basically includes anyone with broad shoulders or a waistline more than thirty inches. Go back to 2006 and you can find some nasty critiques of Daniel Craig's physique, and he looked tremendous.

Also, one guy that I think makes a good example of body transformations is Robert Downey Jr; he was reasonably fit from martial arts training but through old-school lifting he got into tank top shape for Iron Man, then slimmed down for Sherlock Holmes, then had to get the muscle back for Iron Man 2. I believe he threatened suicide (hopefully in jest) if he had to do another traditional bench press or squat, so his trainer came up with more bodyweight and odd lifts to shock his body back into size and keep it interesting.

edit: may have gotten ahead of myself... feel a bit silly that they literally just meant the film scene... my bad
