bob g I think Chris Harris is great and I love his videos. Different type of car review to these ones though (driving orientated v consumer orientated).
This is my dream car right now. Yes, I'd prefer an Continental V8, or a BMW X5 M550d, or an A6 BiTDI Quattro estate... but those are way too expensive to be realistically buyable. The Golf R is an expensive car, at £32,000 for a DSG model - but that price seems somehow reachable. Something which you can maybe save up to if you stop wasting money on Guinness and cocktails. And you can get a nearly new one, with less than 10k on the clock, for less.
Or you could lease one for just around £300 a month including VAT for 23 payments on top of the 1200-1500 down in two years your talking 8-9k not bad hey:-)
I am getting a Golf R Estate to replace my A6 BiTDI Estate. The A6 has unlimited torque and great for autobahn storming but really falls apart in the tight twisty roads. The Golf on the other hand is something I can take to the track if I wanted to.
There were some GREAT lease deals on this a few months back. Was cheaper to lease this than ANY GTI!!! Its now £200 more a month. Obviouslt VW wanted to get some out on the road and come april I'll be be driving one of them - whoooop
I was looking to buy one of these but put out a bit more money and landed a 2016 S3. There were no Rs to test drive but there were plenty of Ss. Anyway I'm happy with my ride. Nice review Mat.
tell me they figured out how to fix the damn seating position where my legs aren't slightly angled in towards the center stack of the car. My back kills me driving my stupid R.
Great review Matt as always! Hope you can get your hands on the R 400 when it gets built. I just bought the Up! mainly because of your review and for the money I paid, what a car! Perfect for the 6 day work commute I do.
The mk4 and mk5 R's styling looked so much different than there GTI counterparts you could tell them apart instantly, this just looks like a normal mk7
Dear Mat. Please stop spreading misleading info that this car can send more power to rear wheels. It has central Haldex clutch, it is not mechanically possible. It will have 50:50 power distribution when clutch is fully engaged. When fronts start to slip you will have more torque on rear wheels thanks to new clutch full lock capability. It is an outcome of a situation, not something that car does on purpose. Stop reading marketing PR rubbish and use your head.
VW Golf R is a silent killer, it has already ran rings around some 350+ hp monsters I mean turbo v6 and some NA v8 cars around some tracks, I am a Ford RS fan but I must admit that apart from the ultra boring styling of this car, its an epic that cannot be challenged The SEAT made better time with better tires and upgraded brakes on Nurburgring the Auto express reviewed car was genuine but its no way near as luxurious as Golf R, and I must admit that no other car in this world can mix comfort, luxury, practicality and performance like Golf R in a single package
jandj Godwin this is exacly why i like the golf. Most call it boring, but i think its classy the way it is. Megane RS and focus ST are “boy cars” a bit childish. But the golf r is a car which you can drive when you are in your 30s and not feel like a midlife crisis lol
German designer: Hey let's change the design! German directors: NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN!!! German Human ressources manager: We are looking for a new designer feel free to apply...
The Leon Cupra 280 is a hell of a lot better looking, cheaper, faster around a track and probably more fun to drive than the Golf R. The Audi S3 is posher, has a better interior, badge and resale value. You would need to obsess over the Golf shape to buy one over a Cupra or S3. Personally, i couldn't understand someone rationally or personally choosing to buy a Golf R over them.
People who buy hot hatches. Hence, the Megane R26, R26R, Astra OPC Extreme, Golf R Evo etc. Not everyone goes around power sliding around a roundabout or crashing into a ditch around a country road corner. Some people like to get their thrills within the safe environment of a track.
These things are fast on the straight. I drive an 05 Altima SE-R, and this car was walking me; but it was really slow on the twisties. Over all this new Volkswagen is really fast from the factory.
Awesome performance, but it looks sooooo soooooooooooo bland from the front! Some people would think it was a 1.4 TSI! Just like the latest GTI, it just doesn't look as good as the Mark 6 car! The quad pipes make it look like a M3 but to be honest the twin pipes on the Mark 5 and 6 were better to look at! As a previous Mark 5 and 6 GTI owner I left the VW for a BMW... I think its a bit of lazy VW design. For the price of a Golf R, I would expect more visual excitement, whilst still remaining classy. This R car doesn't get me excited at all.
yeah but there is conservative and there is down right dull! I owned GTi's for years for the very point you make, they don't date and also they don't stand out too much in the crowd, but at least you know its a GTI! and people know what a GTI can do as its an iconic badge. But this R is bland and apart from the pipes, dull red light covers, R badge it looks just like a normal golf. For over 30k I would expect a bit more of a statement. Its just too conservative. The GTI looks mildly more sporty to be honest, that's where my money would go if I had to choose!
***** Not a point less comment, its MY OPINION. In MY OPINION its bland. More comfortable, well that's your opinion. I found my GTI comfortable and my current BMW is comfortable too. Rear wheel drive v. all wheel...rear wheel drive better driving experience. All wheel drive better in the snow! There is always a trade off there. As for stuff inside....cant really see the difference in kit levels. Based on my last GTI I had to put a lot of extras that my BMW came with as standard. I aint moaning, I am casting my opinion. So it may seem pointless to you, but I may find your comments equally pointless. Respect my views and I am will do likewise with you.
Not all of us want flashy 300bhp hot hatches ... but I do want a 300bhp practical fast all-weather all-road hatchback. I want my Golf R to look like a 1.2 TSI ... in fact I want especially the traffic cops to think it's a 1.2 TSI, while I have fun on a twisty mountain pass without any unwanted attention.
I love wv it makes you feel you are the boss you can control it whatever the speed is ..very comfy from the inside ..one thing I want to say about wv golf and polo very alike change is good sometimes
For me the most serious problem for the Golf R and actually also the Golf GTI is the "inside" competition from the other brands in the VW Group. For about the same money as the Golf R you can get Audi S3, which is an almost identical car but with a much better "badge". And at the other end of the scale, for less than a Golf GTI, you can get the Seat Leon Cubra, which has 50-60 hp more than the GTI. So frankly for anyone with just a bit of common sence, the choise is between the FWD 280 hp Seat Leon Cupra or the 4WD 300 hp Audi A3. While the fast Golfs are just - well - irrelevant.
You recommend the equivalent BMW 1 series, but I think that your colleague, Jeremy Clarkson, out of Top Gear, would disagree with you. On a recent episode of Top Gear, he was travelling at high speed in a straight line and he lost control of the 1 series, he spun for about 8 seconds, sliding from one section of the track to another.
zech007 Doesn't matter, you'll still probably get around 30-35 if you're reasonably light-footed. That's what most people get from a GTI. Manufacturer's claims are always way off.
impossible? rubbish, I used to have a 2.0 litre turbocharged Saab 900 turbo putting out over 220bhp and 250lb/f of torque and could easily get 45mpg on a run. If saab could do that in 1988 I'm sure VW can do it in 2014.
Now if only the states could get some of the other options for fun hatchbacks besides the Focus ST and the GT I,R,D and WRX if they decide to make the hatchback version...
i remember the first 10seconds of the first review i watched of this guy and thinking 'oh god get him off' stuck with it and many reviews later - he is brilliant - should be on top gear
why didn't VW make it a supercharger instead of a turbo petrol engine, the power delivery then would be greater from slightly lower rpm and would be faster in response ( NO turbo lag) and more linear.
The last R32 VW made was based on the MK5 Golf, the Golf R that was introduced with the Mk6 Golf is the successor to the R32. So in other words, the R32 is known as the R nowadays.
We are just getting the new GTI here in Canada. No word if we will get this R. I need a new ride to replace my GTI. I hope this comes. Problem we have here is the Yanks won't pay for a premium import unless it's a Ferrari et al. We would buy this car here in Canada.
Can you not get front fog lamps on the R, as they would be handy for those of us using the 4Motion on Country Roads in the UK ?? !! Plus why not review the 3 door version of such a sporty model as you've done the 5 door on the more mudane versions !!!
hey matt it s been a while since u came up with a review... been busy huh??? I ll gladly do some reviews for u if u so desire!!!! Think about it.. I am in the field for the last 12years...
There is a difference between The GTI and the R. New R 0-60 in 4.9! GTI 6.5 sec. I belive. So if you have a need for more speed but want to look incognito here you go. Can't wait for this to come to the states in MK7 body.
the audi is not posher , they both cost the same in fact they are the same platform the only difference in price is that the audi has metallic paint and rear curtain airbags as standard. Basically audi is better equipped therefore slightly more expensive but if you added the options in the golf its actually the exact same price
It's a really nice car but it it's similar money to an Audi S3 then that's what I'd go for but here in New Zealand the R is $10k cheaper than the S3 but a GTI is $10k cheaper again.
I love this car but i like the two door one better. Im just not a fan of 296 hp. I think it shouldve been at 305hp for 45k that would've been better.. My opinion tho
It is a good super Turbo GTi, but it is by no meenings a VR6... It reminds me more of the 2nd and 3th gen GTI 16V. Cars that did make sence because the regular (then 8V) GTi was not quite fast enough. The 7th Gent GTI is however more then fast enough, making this one a bit too fast and most of all too expensive for a 4 cilinder hatchback...
Joel D Surprised to know there is still a market for fast hatchbacks in the USA? I always tought VW kept the Jetta primaraly for the US market because a sedan is the way to go there? But I am glad for you it is cheap overthere!
FrightfulAccountant Yep, specially if its used we can buy them almost half the price. Though I drive a mazdaspeed 3 might trade in for this, I need the AWD.
If I was never into cars and I saw this car on the street I would be unable to take it seriously, no matter how fast it is. I know some people like to have a "sleeper". But the looks of this car just doesn't do it justice. VW should of gave their sport car a more aggressive look. If I didn't know better I'll say its a hybrid eco friendly car, and that's no fun.
***** the tinted taillights/windows always look better on a white car, a few mods and it will look good in the day/night other than a black/ dark coloured car
GeXExtremist White was once a coolish colour before it went crazy with too many low end cars in white. Kind of chavy white cars colours at the moment. BMW pepper white isn't that bad looking though hehe
thats true but for a 300 HP car its brilliant with 0-60 MPH time of 4 seconds.. wow... I personally own a VW Polo Petrol High-line n i have received more MPG than what company claimed.

The 7th Gent GTI is however more then fast enough, making this one a bit too fast and most of all too expensive for a 4 cilinder hatchback...
Move to another country. It's cheap in the US. We don't get as screwed for buying things deemed "unnecessary" by some arbitrary politicians.
Golf aa ?
If I was never into cars and I saw this car on the street I would be unable to take it seriously, no matter how fast it is. I know some people like to have a "sleeper". But the looks of this car just doesn't do it justice. VW should of gave their sport car a more aggressive look. If I didn't know better I'll say its a hybrid eco friendly car, and that's no fun.
+bJulius86 Very true, 99% ppl won't know this car will do sub 5 seconds 0-60!. I saw one today.... I couldn't tell until I saw the quad pipes!
+bJulius86 the 3 door white version looks aggresive
***** the tinted taillights/windows always look better on a white car, a few mods and it will look good in the day/night other than a black/ dark coloured car
***** say what you want but my car looks sick in white compared to black

White was once a coolish colour before it went crazy with too many low end cars in white. Kind of chavy white cars colours at the moment. BMW pepper white isn't that bad looking though hehe
That awkward moment he realizes de doesn't need blinkers to turn in an airfield haha
This is the best ALL ROUND car you can ever buy, 40 MPG r u kidding me for a 300 HP car... best in the world...
It won't really do 40mpg you will be lucky to get 30mpg. Official figures are always nonsense.
thats true but for a 300 HP car its brilliant with 0-60 MPH time of 4 seconds.. wow... I personally own a VW Polo Petrol High-line n i have received more MPG than what company claimed.
I've got a mk7 GTI and regularly see 40+ mpg. Golf gets closer than most to advertised economy figures.
I think VW has finally priced itself out of the market!
