- Why do I keep finding these huge holes in strange places?
I dont know the answer. Several more Giant Hole discoveries on Google Earth compelled me to travel a very long distance into a strange and inhospitable land.
There's one thing I do know. These these holes I found on Google Earth are ridiculously large, deep, and honestly frightening.
If you have any ideas as to why the Holes don't let me sleep at night, please comment below. Oh, also curious as to what you all think created these amazing and beautiful places.

Now you can see how those holes are made by the wind and water, swirling into the hole over millions of years. Very Cool! Thank You for taking us along.
Stone is malleable ancient artwork through out the world proves this
Brilliant! You can literally watch them be created in the wind
(not an expert, just imaginative and mostly agree with the hypothesis above)
Some of these areas look like they used to be where the ocean was, and it slowly swept away into a giant river system, creating these unique formations.
that is the University penguins' explanation....anyone who understands thermal dynamics can see the heat signatures on these holes and rock. All of this rock.

I wonder how many animals/people have ended up in these holes and unable to get out? Scary
I wonder if a geologist would be willing to repel to the bottom of the pit and do an archeological dig. Might find some human and animal remains down there. I'm sure it would create a whole new hypothesis as to how the pits were made. Lots of speculation going on.

You gotta go check these same pits right after a spring/summer rain 🚿 . I know some exact places just like these ones here in my state of new mexico, that just turn into perfect pools to jump into.
I would love to I've learned soil in a very amateur way it does funny things. Assuming it's all microbiology

What is water no one knows
If you look at the behavior of wind in the vortex type situation it takes dust away. It takes the soil thousands of years to become hard mineralization

Seen one of these on the edge of a 700 foot cliff in Moab. The circle hole had no bottom. I was over hanging the cliff edge so you could see yo the bottom. I climbed in, got stuck in the side scared to death but made it back uo

those are absolutely giant potholes. the amount of water and depth to produce a vortex to carve them out is unimaginable.
I read that it's caused by hundreds of years of continues pressures caused by miles thick glaciers.
Edit: Did some additional research, it's still a debate but it's believe it's caused by millions of years of the colorado river flowing through it and it being a plateau for that long.

Gravel and moving water makes those "potholes". Dangerous when they are still under water. Sometimes they connect and are very dangerous

They look like the holes worn into bedrock in flowing rivers where a movable stone gets trapped somehow in a way that as the water flows the stone spins in place drilling against the bedrock causing huge round holes to form.

@@the_pov_channel I can't stand the wind. I stayed eight weeks on the north slopes of Alaska in the spring. The wind was my biggest issue.
Those were some crazy holes, chewy was saying stop f'ing around.

I’ve done similar things in Vietnam, finding interesting things in Google Maps and then finding it. 100 million population and in a tiny country 20% smaller than California, you’d think everything has been found, but locals are lazy and not into hiking or exploring or anything dangerous. You can still find unexplored places but the threat of poisonous insects, spiders, and snakes, as well as landmines and unexplored bombs are very real.
Consider that the largest cave in the world, Son Doong, wasn’t found until 1990 and not even surveyed until 2009. Of course now it’s a tourist trap and destroyed and littered with trash and construction debris like every beautiful place discovered in Vietnam.
Australian here... man I have never seen anything like this ever. So unique landscape and geography. I got vertigo just watching lol. That freezing swirling wind into those holes was just phenomenal and you experienced the force as well when a gust nearly toppled you down into one of those holes. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest right at that point. Great videos and so relieved you do not take too many risks and you seem to carefully judge what you are doing in that terrain.

These holes are super interesting. For one thing, although it looks like you're on solid bedrock, clearly these holes aren't solid bottomed - there would be snow and water filling them up otherwise. In some there's just a little bit, but they must be at least a little porous at the bottom. I have no idea how they formed but I thought that was interesting to note. It seems in every case, they deepen first and then widen out later - which makes me think these are potentially extremely eroded sinkholes? The smooth sides are just because the wind has been eroding the sandstone for hundreds of thousands of years.

Lol, my pooch is short haired and underneath he's nearly naked, so he lets me know when it's too cold. He stops leading and comes close and doesn't want to move.
Once I put his jacket on, he steps right out again.

I've spent a lot of time in deserts near the equator & have never seen typography quite like this,but,the utter beauty of raw desert is for some reason my preference over highly vegetative landscape.
Seeing yours & your dogs shadow,make me realise just how stupid i was back in my days of treck ,out in the middle of nowhere, I'm guessing you check in & have GPS tracking of some sort? The best i ever had was a walkie-talkie,but depending on terrain it wasn't guaranteed to work.
I've never been a great fan of subzero temperatures, though as you know even in the summer/hot part of the year,the temperature can drop wildly at night. Im going to do a bit of googling to try and really understand the dynamics that shape your type of landscape. Thanks again for sharing it.

Yes Nevada has pits somewhat like these. But they are rocks from Outer Space. The Lunar Park on Highway 6 from Ely on Hwy 93 which extends to Tonopah, Silver mining camps, etc on the west side of Nevada.

According to a documentary I saw, these types of surface scars are caused by water erosion. But to be caused on this scale means that there was a catastrophic amount of water flowing that would have created it relatively quickly, such as by a 1300' tital wave that flowed inland then back out to sea, like seen across the landscape of the US just south of the Canadian border. I can confirm that that tidal wave was due to the sinking of the continent of Lemuria, since you are presumably on the west coast.

Slips do happen no matter how carefully you are.I learned this the hard way.Now i have two metallic hips and Several vertebrae discs destroyed.Im so lucky I can walk still.

I'm so with you. What is his plan if his dog takes a fall? Or him? InReach? What's he carrying to conserve heat? Hypothermia isn't forgiving. I'm glad he has his five layers, but I'm not sure that will be enough to spare him.

At 3:11 they look like either post holes or where trees were once buried and rotted away. They look perfectly round though. Were they purposely carved out to collect water from above that seeped through the sandstone would be one question I'd ask.
It’s amazing how erosion works with these holes. The area is so pristine contrasting with the rock & snow.

You should definitely look up Randall Carlson's work. He has a perfect explenation on how these holes are created. I am guessing this is part of the channeled scablands near Washington?
There have been massive floods at the end of the last ice age in that region. Basically these are created by underwater turbulence, a swirling vortex under water.

It was comet that hit upper North America around 11,600 years ago and caused cataclysmic flooding. Possibly an optical illusion this area was probably Forest and rsin was probably prevalent these possibly water storage the bolders are out of place.
A book. Briefly describe each each each excersion, briefly how you felt, how your dog reacted throughout. Find photos that you only took to describe in glossiness and reach for it if the day comes to manuscript it. For it may not always be to download like we do today but to curl up and read it they will , ought to, recommend it to their friends too.😊

Maybe there haven't been any floods for millions of years eg: perhaps the rocky sedimentary plains he is walking across have been 'pushed up' by geological changes to a high elevation.. so that floods do not occur there now? There are trees growing down in the holes - they would be scourd away by any floods. Then again, 500yrs to 5000- 20,000 years is but the blink of an eye in geological time.
