- Restoration of a broken Mechanical biathlon shooting target. I will restore and repair this mechanical target and take it to the local gun range to test the functions.
ABOUT THE TARGET
This is a mechanical biathlon shooting target used for training skills in a combination of skiing in the winter or during roller skis in the summer. Biathlon is a very common sport where I live, we have snow from November to April. The sport basically combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting as a race, with skiing through a cross-country trail whose distance is divided into shooting rounds. Missed shots on the shooting range result in extra distance or time being added to the contestant's total. So when you shoot your rounds of 5 shots, you often have high pulse which is very challenging and demands very good shooting skills and high mental focus.
I found it at a campfire place in the forest a few years ago when I lived higher up the mountain. So it has been in my position a few years. Now I felt that it was time to restore it and my plan was to restore it before the snow disappeared so I could show you how to ski and shoot in a combination. But guess what the spring came over night and alle the snow disappeared within a week. So I just took it to a friend’s place on a local private shooting range to test shoot it instead.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by disassembling all the mechanics on the shooting target separating the targets from the target frame and the re-arm system. I gave all the metal a good sandblasting using aluminum oxide as my media.
After the sandblasting I repaired a few shooting holes which was caused by using to powerful ammunition .308 Winchester instead of low velocity .22 caliber rimfire or .22 or .177 airgun pellets. I also TIG welded the re-arm system and added a new wire to it.
I powder coated the shooting frame and all the targets with RAL 9003 GL (Glossy) and baked the powder coating for 10 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.
I polished a few parts on my buffer wheel. And added dark stickers on the backside of the targets. Finally I took it to the shooting range where we had some fun shooting and barbecuing hotdogs with magical views.

@@Yungbeck i take on so many little projects and I desperately tried to get a blasting station where I’m at, considering it’s one of the most satisfying steps of the process, but lack of real estate won’t allow me to accommodate all the equipment I would really need to have. It was a good piece of welding and grinding Martin, the welds disappeared when you were finished. Glad to see Ducky reappear as well. I have an pellet rifle with a 10x scope, I wish we could have a friendly shooting competition I am toasting you're craftsmanship and marksmanship with a Franzishaner Premium Weissbier.
