--A statement from NA--
Are you here right now?
This is the question we ask ourselves at the start of every work session. It is also the question at the root of this film.
We spend most of our days recycling the same patterns of thought. Whether it be replaying a fond memory, or obsessing about what we should have said or done differently, we drift through most of our waking lives watching videos of our past, and letting them dictate our future. But the question becomes: How true are these memories? And what becomes of the here and now, if we spend so much time away from it? When looking back, the grass can be as green as we choose to remember. Certainly greener than the present moment. But what if the memory was never so green to begin with? Can we really know for sure? And when we are the only audience member in the theatre of our memories, does it ultimately really matter?
For us, we always felt the most present during summer nights. Those moments just after the sun went down, the thick, warm air on your skin, the intoxicating smell of salt water and bonfire smoke, with nowhere to be but There. In these moments, there was truly no time like the present. While these memories provide us with joy and comfort, they also make it harder to pull ourselves out of our past, and into the present.
This is what our film is about. We wanted to tell a story about someone who spends their life replaying a memory, but in doing so, prevents themselves from living a life that doesn’t need to be re-imagined. In A Shore, we examine the temptations and manipulations of nostalgia; that burst of warmth released in your stomach that one moment all those years ago, that you’ve spent your whole life recreating in your mind.
So before you go any further, we want to ask you:
Are you here right now?
