Circular Bridge in Uruguay | Genius Idea or Fail?

  • This bridge is located in the country of Uruguay at a place called Laguna Garzon and it’s the only circular bridge for cars in the world.
But what is the logic? Why not just make it straight?
In the past, the way to cross this lagoon was one car at a time on these small slow boats.
For a long time, the local government discussed the idea of making a bridge to help tourism thrive on the other side of the lagoon, but the problem was that the lagoon itself was also a tourist attraction.
People already came here to fish and for bird watching, so the problem was that a bridge in the middle would turn the lagoon into a passing spot instead of a destination.
Another problem they wanted to avoid was acoustic contamination.
It would be dangerous for the biodiversity of the lagoon to have cars passing all day at high speeds.
So they offered the project for different architects to come up with solutions
That’s when Raffael Viñoly, a renowned Uruguayan Architect came up with this unique design, which at first seemed illogical and a little bit ridiculous, yet after a lot of explaining, it ended up being selected for construction
Raffael’s simple and unusual design solved every single one of the problems.
By being a circle the cars are naturally forced to slow down, which takes away the noise.
    - By being the “only circular bridge for cars in the world”, people think of it as a destination itself and not just as a highway
    - By adding a comfortable walking path, tourists actually “use the bridge” for fishing, sight seing and bird watching.
    - And because of it’s hight and minimal contact with the water it ends up being better for the environment than the boats they used in the past.

Great solution, then! I, myself, being Uruguayan had no idea of the history behind... Thank you!

Creative solutions which architects are generally trained to do.Spaces and places can be more habitable and pleasant to use with a conscientious, creative and scientific approach to design.😎

A very clever idea, and on top of all the other advantages, it's also just a beautiful piece of art!

I really appreciate your approach to travel, I am currently living in the U.S. and considering the digital nomad life but want to discover the people and the innovations across the world rather than get Instagram pics. Do you have a top 5 affordable places to go to?
Also this idea is genius and I love it :)

Another theory for the bridge design is that it is an automatic sobriety test. If the driver of a car does not pass the sobriety test, he gets wet.

In other words, it could simply be a fucking straight path but they wanted to "innovate" in order to create stupid tourism or something, even though the traffic sucks. Thats it.

I agree. This is still dumb after being explained, in my opinion. Form over function is such a ridiculous position to me.
