    Gibson ES-335 or Heritage H-535?

    • @topografer
      @topografer Год назад +2

Hey there. Today I had the chance to test side by side a heritage and a Gibson. I have exactly the same remarks as yours. Gibson is deeper and cleaner. Heritage is a bit brighter and dirtier. I think pickups play their part on this but the construction dictates this primarily I think. The feel is very similar even though the heritage is a bit thinner.

I have a Heritage 535 and really like the craftsmanship but didn’t like the Seymour Duncan 59 which I find them to be lacking warmth and depth. So I swapped out the pick up for Gibson Bill Lawrence pick up from the 90s. The tone changed a lot. Has depth and sparkle at the same time. Really awesome.

I prefer Gibson ES-335 like dots and top hat black knobs with vintage sunburst cherry and ebony. Three of my favorite colors.

They both sound great. The average listener at a show would not know the difference.

I bought a mid-60's 335 on July 3, 1976 (you never forget your first Gibson). I still have it. It was my main axe for 45 years. I have bought two Heritage 575's (the ES-175 counterpart). I sold the first one because I needed some cash. I sold the 2nd one three months ago because I traded it in for a Heritage 555 (the 535 with more bling). I played several really nice 335's at the guitar store (Chicago Music Exchange) but when I played the Heritage, I was sold. Now, fbofw, my mid-60's 335 sits in the corner and I play the 555 almost every day. Classic rock, blues, some jazz, adult contemporary, and country, through a Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120 and a small Vox AC15. Heritage rocks!

Fit and finish on the Heritage is so much nicer. The sound is subjective and can be dialed to your liking. Both sound good.

I have a Heritage H535 and H550, both are the best guitar in my arsenal. I also have 3 Gibsons and the Heritages blown them away in sound and playability. Best guitars I ever tried.

    Thanks for this video!
I waited for over a year for a 335 only to be told it would be another 6 months before I received it.
After talking to my good friends at Fralin pickups, they suggested trying a Heritage 535. I pulled my order for the 335 and bought the Heritage 535..
So glad I did!!! It’s an amazing guitar and I will be purchasing more from Heritage…!

I suggest everyone to use headphones when listening! When listening with just my laptop speakers I thought the Gibson sounded slightly better, but then I grabbed a pair of headphones and realized that the Heritage actually sounds better!

I purchase the Heritage H-535 Aged Artesian model in a beautiful cherry red finish!
The store that I purchased this guitar at was well-stocked with Gibson ES-335's and other Heritage models so I was there for quite some time comparing these guitars.
It's kind of funny because I only went into the store to buy guitar strings and I saw that cherry red guitar on the wall and just had to try it out!
I ended up picking up the guitar out the door for $2250 when it listed for $2799. So I got a really good deal and not only that in my opinion the Heritage just stuffed the Gibson ES-335's!
My particular guitar came with the Seth Lover pickups and apparently some of them come with Duncan 59's.
I couldn't be happier, this guitar is so responsive and lively it's just incredible and the sustain is beyond ridiculous man!
Considering the Gibson ES-335 was listed at $4699 and my guitar was listed $2799 it was a no-brainer!

I have an H535 with the Duncan 59's. I'd like to try one with the Seth Lovers though. I must say that the Heritage plays and sounds better then most Gibson 335's I've played. Fit and finish is way better.

I recently bought a 2020 Gibson SG Special in faded pelham blue. It's a beautiful guitar but I just can't seem to bond with the neck shape. Then more recently I picked up a 2004 Heritage H-535 and it is everything I have been looking for. The craftsmanship is top notch and while not the same style of guitar, it blows away my 2020 USA Gibson. So much so that I'm now looking to sell the SG lol. Great video and playing!

I have a wide collection of Fenders, Gibsons, and one heritage. My heritage 535 has always played better than any 335 I’ve ever owned or played, but it also feels slightly less versatile in its sound.

Thanks for doing this. I’m up in NJ and visited Russo’s today and played a 535. Really nice guitar but I have very little experience with semi HBs. I need to try a 335 before pulling the trigger but they didn’t have one in stock.. your vid really helped. Thanks again. I will say that the 535 through the little Princeton Reverb I played through at the store sounded very clean and clear and a little warmer.

I'll pay the extra for the Gibson Custom ES335. Dont understand the issue on paying alot for a guitar..EVERYBODY pays a shit ton of money on these new cars that ain't worth shit 5 years down the road and your money is gone.
Spending 5 grand or more is a Gibson Custom Guitar...a great investment. Point is life short get what you fucking want dont compromise on your gear...EVER !

You make great points and I agree with you. I know people who have no problem spending $4k for a decked-out MacBook Pro laptop computer that will be obsolete in a few years who think it's idiotic to spend $4K on a Gibson guitar.

Nice demo, JL! Sounded great, with great playing and both guitars are great, of course. I'm glad that Heritage decided to have the output jack on the rim. I agree with you: the 1/8" difference in depth (between the guitars) is noticeable. I also think that the neck angle difference between the 335 and the 535 makes a difference in sound, with 535's sounding more like 335s with the decreased neck angles (mid-60s through 70s) that have had their tailpieces changed from trapeze to stop.

I use to have a 1966 Gibson 345 stereo and own a 1993 Heritage 535. I like the Heritage better and especially for Jazz! I have SD Jazz pick ups which are articulate, have a little more highs and less bass and bc of those pick ups and the thinner body I can turn the guitar up more than the 345 and get great Jazz tones, better than the 345! You can always get deep sounds out of these guitars but the mids and highs are important and the Heritage wins and to be honest is also in my opinion a better built and sounding guitar but they are getting expensive!

I was surprised that I liked the sound of the Gibson 335 better. Seemed to have a richer sound if that makes any sense. The Heritage seemed to my ears narrower. I was expecting the Heritage to sound dirtier, but again, not to my ears.

Both are great, it comes down personally preference. Both are winners. The 335 has the classic rich Gibson with that nice woody sound....if that is what you want. The Heritage has a cleaner sound

Héritage stinky sound. It takes your personality out as a player, Gibson stays cool, it bites, goes up and down.
