I can't even remember the last time I purchased tomatoes from the store. If I can't garden and grow my own, I just won't have any. Last year, I tried to make fermented green tomatoes. For the most part most part they ended up being okay to eat; but, the ones that I thought were a bit odd tasting were the ones that had barely started ripening inside. The green ones that were green inside and out were much better. My mom used to put green tomatoes on the window sill above the kitchen sink. I will put green tomatoes in a brown paper grocery sack. If I have one, I will also put a banana in the bag, too.
Finally I have 2 blushing Roma tomatoes, these are my first of the season here in Northern Michigan. With 80 tomato plants, I thought that I would get some before August.

Would you recommend I remove the ones with blossom end rot, or let them ripen? Would they ever ripen?
I have 19 indeterminate tomato bushes now. Just harvested about 10 first ripe tomatos from them a week ago. It required a lot of work indeed! Couple of times the seedlings looked purple and were shedding leaves so I thought for sure i would lose them. I had total over 50 seedlings though. Almost all of them survived its just most of them kind of stunted but they are all in the soil now and doing good. I put them in a paper bag with a banana. When you say drought what about if they wilt? We have to water tomatoes in containers every day here in 10B or they wilt.
You also pick the ones that have started to ripen, 20-40% ripe is perfect just put them all in a cardboard box top down with 1 or 2 already ripe tomatoes and they Will finish ripening in a couple of days. Especially for large slicers
Only one job now - we need to work out how to grow tomatoes all year round(even in Northern Hemisphere) I wonder if Arkopia and his fabulous greenhouse set up that grows all year round, and has a banana tree, would be capable of such a stupendous feat.
