Behind the scenes of the making of Moby Dick in Youghal, Co Cork, back in 1954. The late projectionist Mikey Roche talks about the filming of 'Moby Dick' and the excitement of Hollywood stars like Gregory Peck, John Huston coming to town. I was on a film set in the UK as an extra in "Death defying Acts", I believe. We were chatting with several older gentlemen when I bought up the excellence of John Huston's "Moby Dick".
"Ah Yes", spoke one of the older ones in his soft, Irish burr, with a chuckle and wistful look in his eyes. "I was 14 when they came to my village in Ireland to film the inn scene. If you look carefully, you can just see me sitting in the corner!"
In the many more times I was on a film set and got talking to the older extras/actors there, I made sure to be quite when they told their tales from the past.

Great clip, many thanks for uploading . I was 11 in 1954 and the filming of Moby Dick was a big talking point in Cork . I don't know why the director had the women on the quayside looking so glum when the boat was departing . It just doesn't ring true as there would be great excitement and cheering at such an event .

The looks on the women's faces said everything; that was a hard hard life.

John Huston used three 16-foot plaster-cast models of 'Moby Dick' and lost one off them off the Azores; this is where Steven Speilberg got the idea when shooting JAWS.
