Very biased opinion but Grimsley is my favorite timeskip design. Dude developed a gambling addiction in the past due to unfortunate reasons, and most likely its consequences over the years is what made him so stressed out he turned pale and gray in less than two years (he doesn't specify to the player what broke him down, but I think this is the most obvious guess).
He says he walked by the shore out of despair, and before he even noticed what he was doing, he found himself riding Alola's waves alongside his Sharpedo and Mantine. There he knew his newest purpose in life was to teach people how to surf (as he is the one who unlocks you said pokemon in SM and USUM's ride systems)
He is not an Elite Four member anymore, he is a surfer now. He found another skill he enjoys and is good at. Also, in real life gambling is illegal in Hawaii if I recall correctly, so these actions may definitely not be a coincidence. He is getting himself out of his misery and fighting for a new life without depression, stress, and addictions, and I think that's pretty dope.
Great analysis!
I always found Dark type specialists as cool but super shady (for obvious reasons) and seeing Grimsley in gen7 made me so excited. when I looked into why the heck he was not in Unova, he instantly became one of my favourites
Now THATS some excellent writing! Didnt even realize that
I only spoke to him like once but i always thought he was pretty cool looking lmao.
Lol. He should do it on the dl.
I've never really thought about how many characters made quick appearances in the Gen 7 games. Only now that its been brought up can I truly appreciate it. Really hope to see more characters from past games make appearances, even if its just a a cameo. Maybe something similar to the world Tournament in B2/W2 could make that possible
I would really like to see Guzma in gen 9
yeah gen 7 was extreme nostalgia bait probably the worst its ever been
I would love another world tournament feature in Scarlet and Violet.
Would like to see other protagonist beside Red appear
@@weeb5153 I think Green or Leaf or whatever her name was showed up in Lets Go, but I could be misremembering
Grimsley looks older because of the stress induced by the introduction of Fairy types.
Yeah
Sylveon too strong :3
I love how legacy characters look like they're on vacation in alola
Or business in terms of Anabel
and then there’s colress

I never knew Burnet wasn’t from Sun and moon I didn’t even know she came from a spin off! I just saw her in the anime and assumed she originated from Sun and moon 💀
tbf dream radar was a very early 3ds game designed to connect to a ds game so it's understandable not many people care about it
@@scrunkore I played the dream radar myself and completely forgot about her lol
One of the best parts of Gen 7 is the large amount of returning characters, including obscure ones like Dexio, Sina, and Burnet
Ultra Necrozma Is Clearly The Best Part Of Gen 7 !
@@melvondrewhite2674 One of =/= the best. There are many great parts of gen 7.
@@MiriaJiyuu Ultra Necrozma Is #1 & It’s NOT A Debate !
wait a couple of more years people will appreciate it eventually, I notice that's how it usually goes with pokemon games, a new game comes out people starts crying about how much it sucks then some years later appreciate it for what it was because they're busy flaming the new game
@@melvondrewhite2674 chill
I've always been a sucker for continuity in Pokémon games that's why Pokémon GSC/HGSS and Black and White 1 and 2 are some of my favourite games in the series. I love seeing characters changes from one game to another and how it ties in within the whole of the Pokémon world. The same is true for a past perspective too for me, hence why I loved seeing the Hisuian region and it's predecessor's before it became known as the Sinnoh region. Thank you so much for making this video and keep it up! 😄
Thanks! But yeah, I like that we’ve been getting to see returning characters because it just makes everything feel connected. Really wish Sword and Shield would have had more previous characters.
Truth be said, though, PLA didn't really do a great job. XD Some designes are literally "It's the same character, but wearing past clothes".
Too bad they didn’t do that for DP. It was also dumb to rename it as Hisui when it contradicts established canon so much smh.
Man people really didnt give Sun and Moon the credit it deserved.
Gamefreak really poured alot of effort and love into this game and SwSh shows how they feel about their efforts going mocked
no fr 😭😭 a lot of people overlook sun and moon when its honestly some of the best games in whole series!!

Sun and Moon just wasnt well received in general but maaaan was there alot going on there
tbf SM is criticized like most gens but it's still pretty well liked in comparison to XY.
Basically every Gen following Gen 4 was criticised upon release. Just wait for the game to hit it’s 10 year anniversary and everyone will praise it and say “I’ve always loved it”
I’m not disagreeing with you, but I swear I’ve been hearing this about every Gen after Gen 4 about how under-appreciated it is
@@darknessknows1235 Because XY was actually trash and so was gen 4. Gen 2, gen 4, and BW2 are trash but are loved by the community. Sun and Moon + OG BW were hated upon release
Pokemon community is weird. They hate quality and love memes smh. The only reason Johto and DP are looked at fondly is because of Whitney and Cynthia respectively.
Pokemon fans choose whether to like or dislike a game based off of weird reasons instead if the game is actually well designed or not
I am a big Colress' stan. I love how unscrupulous he is when it comes to achieving his goals. This is wrong but someone who uses an Internet Explorer hairstyle is allowed to be as selfish as he is. And correct me if I'm wrong, but in the Rainbow Rocket arc he kind of has the ability to travel between dimensions, he's the man.
I also love how he's just always beeping away at his wrist devices lmao. Like- he's not even looking- what is he doing lmao.

Really enjoyed this video, Gen 7 being a celebration of Pokemon seems to be very overlooked in some places in the community. Anabel's redesign was easily my favorite
Luckily Green came back in Let's Go Pikachu again I loved her in the manga shes the most forgotten character in Pokemon she gets overshadowed by the Chad Red seriously the dude is skilled Pokemon trainer.

I just noticed that the female grunt's hair is meant to be shaped as an R, that's so unnecessarily clever
One thing I would've liked to see was Cynthia in her casual outfit from the BW anime. I think it still fits with the summery Alola feel and it's not like we don't have anime references in the games already. This one seems much more tame than Ash-Greninja being obtainable in a universe Ash doesn't exist in. I also would have loved to see a more casual (and frankly, older) Wally but I can't think of anything design wise.
It’s commonly implied that there is an Ash in the games, at least in of Gen 7.
In the Ghost Trial, you can find a variety of Pikachu Photos, and among them is a photo of Ash’s Pikachu on his shoulder. Pikashium exists, and Gen 7 introduced the Ash Hat Pikachus.
@@FrostGlader and you get ash-greninja in the demo of sm, with a letter from ash
I cant imagine how hot it'd be for her to be wearing that heavy black outfit in the heat of an Alolan Summer lmao.
Pokémon has some of the best glow ups I have ever seen! Pokémon has amazing Pokémon and human character designs!
Not sure about the new Pokes but the Humans yes they look so good lol
Absolutely underrated gen that will be looked on quite fondly in the years to come, I think
I would have loved to see an interaction between Grimsley and Colress
Grimsley:
"Hey, remember that time when your boss crucified all of Unova's gym leaders outside the Pokémon league?"
@@Celtmane Colress: "What? You must have the wrong guy. That's just as likely as me freezing over Opelucid city."
Gen 7 was probably the best generation to date with just how much you can fit into a game. Before the dex cut in gen 8, gen 7 allowed EVERY SINGLE POKÉMON in the game. They fit gimmicks like totem Pokémon, Z moves, megas, characters (some) from previous generations, actually good story and pacing, had a VERY competitive meta, features like the battle tree, and an actually challenging post game including Team Rainbow Rocket. Say what you will about gen 7, they are the most content heavy games to date. Nothing will come close to this unless or until Game Freak really steps up how much content you can actually fit into a game.
i strongly disagree with Gen 7 having a good story much less good pacing.
3:41
Grimsley is a gambling addict.
He lost his entire fortune in 2 years
Also he became a gambling addict because his family lost all of its fortune in the past
I love how Colress just shows up like he isn’t wanted for war crimes in Unova
You didn't mention it, but Maxie and Archie looking the same as the original games is great, solidifying the fact that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire did happen in an alternate timeline. Really cool detail!
Which is kinda weird in lysandre's case in all of this since it mean out of the Ultra-evolution timeline he is the only one to have succeeded, but tbf for Lysandre to be there he had to unleash the "i kill all pokemon on earth and mostly likely all lives because Yveltal powers the superweapon" which already doesnt make sense, i love XY but the scenario is...
I thought the leaders in Team Rainbow Rocket were from universes where their plans succeeded? I may be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that's the lore behind it. If I'm not wrong, that means that either RSE are from an alternate timeline or it doesn't confirm anything.
also, aside of Lillie, although there aren’t any visual changes at all, but Hau had different pose in the Ultra game
not to mention the protagonist also drastically changed in the Ultra games
4:01 wtf. Red got HOT. ALmost reminds me of Ryu from street fighter.
I was never a huge fan of Giovanni, but Rainbow Rocket upping the ante for him was a great step in the right direction. His relatively grounded original plan just being a stepping stone in practice makes him a lot more interesting to me, and after that Masters EX really helped him become my favourite Pokémon villain. I know that doesn't really address the design in any way, but I think it's cool that Giovanni got a glow-up in a very different way.
3:33 whatchu mean, he got quite more handsome if ya ask me
I play Masters and every time Red speaks, I have to take screenshot. Like I’ve been knew that he talks, but even after 25 years, it really is a “seen still can’t believe” vibe.
Colress’ glow to me is an interesting switch up. Instead of some tablet like gadget he carries around, it’s now built into his coat and has a Nintendo Power Glove look to it. At least that’s why I feel looking at it with the overall bulky look if the gloves and the control panels looking like NES controllers to me sells that more seeing as the power glove was a NES accessory
The fact that we had no crossover characters in Galar always made those games feel so disconnected to me. Im hoping there are more ties to the rest of the series in Paldea maybe even post game Kalos like some people are theorizing
a lost opportunty to have kalos characters in galar since tecnically it is near kalos due to kalos being based on france and galar being losely based on the british isles
When the inevitable Kalos remakes happen I hope they do what they did for the other popular Pokémon remakes and touch up the story. It really needs a second draft, it’s not the worst story these games have had but their was plenty of story opportunities just not taken that I feel would have really helped
@@Broomer52 Lysandre's motivation should revolve around wanting to bring back his dead wife or something, it works better with the life and death theme of the Legendary trio. He hates seeing beauty die because his own beautiful wife died or something. Iirc in the anime that was what the ancient hero wanted the power of Xerneas and Yveltal for. It also parallel's AZ killing Pokémon to bring back his Floette really well.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 seems a little too cliché for my taste

While people comment of how much Kanto is referenced in Alola, there is a lot even from other regions, though we tend not to think about it even when it's right below our noses
Like The Sudowodo Blocking From Gen 2 ? Yea I Noticed That Too ..
"He's been wearing blue this entire time" that's literally purple
Every time he said Blue I was like... "But... No? He's never worn blue?"
Grimsley on his way to touch some grass
I love this i was just watching hoopsandhiphop’s video and he was making a gen7 connection to gen1 and now this great minds think alike its definitely a legacy sequel
Totally makes sense that Blue would be one to travel the world. I recall he showed up in the XY manga out of nowhere alongside Blaine. It’s been a while since I read it but I believe it had something to do with Mega Evolution.
One of my favorite details is that the Archie and Maxie in Team Rainbow Rocket use their old gen 3 designs. We know Sun and Moon take place in the Mega timeline since they’re available in the post game so the ORAS Archie and Maxie are technically different from the ones that are in Team Rainbow Rocket
Not to mention the Pokémon Anime’s Gary is based off of Blue, and Gary has made an appearance in so many different seasons outside of indigo league.
Yeah rainbow rocket Maxie and Archie are from the non mega time line, just like Anabel
The text that appears at 5:21 says
'Tomboy Tomfoolery'
You're welcome.
7:30 This is Classic Maxie and Archie's first appearance in 3D. Different from their redesigns in oras. Neat
I'm surprised with the talk of Guzma and Plumeria's subtle changes, you didn't go over Lillie considering her change was the most story relevant. But, maybe you made a previous video mentioning it so apologies if that was the case.
To be fair Lillie’s change is pretty different and difficult to not notice if you play thru the game. Guzma and Plumeria’s are a bit more subtle. I knew Plumeria changes to a headband but never noticed the removal of the tattoos or Team Skull iconography on her or Guzma till now.
@@AlexDayz that was actually the first thing I noticed.
How am I just realizing the reason why there's so many gen 5 characters is because Hawaii is also a part of the U.S. like New York.
I like how Red matured into a silent and stoic person just cause of limitations back then.

My head canon is this is the reason Oras has no Battle Frontier
Daddy Grimsley is forever my favorite

Ikr like he was hot before but he looks hotter in SM/USUM snsjsnsnsjjsjs
I'm glad you brought gen 7 up. I really lived this gen and Noone talks about it
i have such a soft spot for creepy uncle grimsley in gen 7 lmao
CREEPY UNCLE GRIMSLEY LMAO
Red from R/B/Y: Awkward kid
Red from SM/US/UM: Chad
Ultra Moon was the first Pokémon game I fully finished so the Alola region will always have a special place in my heart!
i like Red and Blue in the mid-gen sprites and Let's Go, they are just so adorable...
Red and Green are DEFINITELY on like. Their honeymoon or something in Alola you can NOT change my mind
I've been playing since red version and I think sun and moon or ultra are my favorite games in the series so far. We'll see if scarlet and violet change that!
Sooooo did it change it?
Right now, I'm doing a randomized Nuzlocke of Ultra Sun and I'm remembering exactly why I fell in love with the original Sun and Moon back during High School. Such an overhated game that absolutely oozes charm and charisma with all of its smaller details.
I loved Alola. The whole dex, the UB's good story, Aether Foundation, good music. Hasn't been a game that good since.
I really like adult Red and Blue but I want to see adult Leaf/Green too
Grimsley has come to Alola to escape his gambling debt
If my memory is correct, I think that Guzma's skull on his jacket gets a big red X put over it after the main game
I love this channel, hearing about design is so wonderful
Red has my favorite redesign because it just makes it feel like he is actually his age
One of the reasons why I love alola: you can fight characters in a way that seems almost unreal. Like, this is posible:
Oh, you beat 9 NPCs in the superbattle tree? Face a Cynthia with mega-garchomp, good luck! A lot of people vome back and it's not just as boring battles, it's competitive-styled battles with megas and very well thought-out strats
Damn, I played through Sun and Moon but didn't finish S/M2 and now I'm upset so many characters from my favorite generations 5 and 6 suddenly appear in Alola! I really appreciate Glowup Red and Blue, these two don't mean much to me as I started with D/P and HG/SS. But I remember my first time climbing Mt. Silver and blacking out to this mysterious Pokémans Master, and returning and defeating Red was the first time I felt triumph my life ever... Yes, I cared about Pokémons more then anything!
Red and Blue's nonchalant clothing make'em feel like such mature Pokémon Masters compared to their OG trainer gear which made every Trainer tryhards. Such a great Glowup...!
Anabelle is now basically Kyoko Kirigiri and I love it
I've played Dream Radar as a kid. Seeing Burnet being brought back was such a pleasant surprise.
Please continue these!
Colress' nes thing makes sense as a reference because when I saw that new design for the first time my mind instantly went to "power glove!"
Just noticed they brought back archie and maxie's original designs rather than the remake's designs
6:34 Plumeria also loses the white makeup around her eyes
1:16 I FORGOT ABOUT THAT FEATURE, you've awakened an ancient memory for me
WOAH! I had no idea that Professor Burnet was actually from Gen 5 and not from Gen 7's Sun and Moon! 😱🤯
Also the anime REALLY gave her a lot of personality! 🥰
some of these character designs are so elite
This show how great Sun and Moon is
I so wish they'd do this more often. >.< Bianca should have been a professor in SV dlc
0:57 team rocket wears these in the anime
I honestly forgot about Pokémon Dream Radar, meaning I didn’t even know that Burnet was in a Pokémon game before. Thanks for reminding me of both!
for me gen 7 was the first pokémon game so it was really a magical experience
Hearing about Burnet and the therian forms in Gen 5 makes it a lot clearer now why she gives you the reveal glass in Gen 7.
When Red and Blue's immortality potions run out:
If you take pokemon masters as any form of canon, grimsley is in alola because he was invited by nanu after participating in the 1st PML tournament.
It’s crazy how many cameos were in these games, like I knew all of them but I never really realized just how many there was
Pokemon Moon is my second favourite game in the series. I always liked the more human shaped characters overworld sprites in the new games more than the chibi overworld sprites in previous gens.
I also really liked Z-moves and still think that Z-moves are the second best new combat mechanic they added. Not Mega Evolution levels of good but still way better than Dynamax.
I also really liked the plot and characters, Team Skull are always a joy and the story of tge game was interesting.
I really like how Faba is the most competent villain in the series by the simple fact that he gave the player false direction and lured then into the wrong basement.
It's really funny actually how giving wrong directions made him the most competent villain.
I also really like the Mythicals in the game, Marshadow is adorable if also terrifying.
The way Moon and Sun have different times based on the clock of your 3ds is also great.
can't believe they brought back a Frontier brain but refuse to bring back the Battle Frontier itself
I've also been playing a lot of Pokemon Sun. They hold up incredibly well and I don't know why people hate the games because to me, they're incredible, back in 2016 and still today
Honestly would love to see you do more videos like this but for other franchises
Whenever I see Red, I can't get over the fact that he no longer keeps in touch with his mother after the events of becoming champion. Really cold
Tis alright Green probably does it for him by proxy since he does have his grandfather and sister living in the same place.
Plus it would he kinda awkward to return to your mother and be like "oh yea, i became champ then decided that the only people i was fighting were weaklings so i went at the top of the tallest mountain in at least 4 regions that is so hostile to human life that only people with 16 badges can even step on it and every wild pokemon is Champion level just to fight me until one beats me.
Surprisingly it only lasted 3 years, but then i had this Tournament on the other side of the world"
@@erwannthietart3602 Keeping company with your neighbors and keeping touch with your family member are two different things. Green taking care of Red's mother while he's away is no substitute for her son's absence.
Awkward or not, that's no excuse to never come home once in a while at all. Any parent would love to see their children, regardless of how awkward their reasons of absence are or how less frequent their visits are.
At the very least Red could've kept in touch with his mother through phone calls, but even that he doesn't do either. He's basically severed all contacts with his friends and family as if they're nothing
2:53 Thank you for acknowledging the Pokemon Picross games on SNES, lol
my favorite aspect of sun & moon is red and blue/green on their honeymoon
I had so much fun in Gen 7. Probably always going to be my favorite generation.
Sun and Moon were two of the best games of the series. People may not realize now because they were different and the community hate on recent shit but history will vindicate me
Another detail with Guzma's second design is that his jacket is noticeably the same, because he just crossed out the Skull emblem on the back with what looks like duct tape.
Ash got a glow down in the anime
Professor Burnet also gives you the mirror glass (or whatever gives you the therian forms) that seems to be another nod back to dream radar.
Blue's new design in conjunction with his new remixed encounter theme is just badass!
Love this videos
I'd love to see a game where it has a cameo from Gold & Silver
"Green rather than blue"
Points to the most purplely looking purple there ever was
honestly it makes sense that so many unovan characters show up in alola as both regions are based on american states. hawaii is a popular tourist destination for mainlanders so it makes sense that a lot of trainers from unova (mainland america) are spending retirement or time off in alola (hawaii).
Grimsley lookin like he stepped out of a Bleach episode
I think with Grimsly, it's meant to be he stopped careing about the sharp dresser aestetic and was probably dyeing his hair to keep up that facade.
Sun and Moon probably is the 2nd best Pokemon Gen game for me (behind original Gen 2). As a 30 year old, I found the story to be good in a sense that adults and children can both understand and like. I sometimes find myself even laughing at some of the dialogue and interactions. Graphics were great for 3DS standard. Gameplay did improved. Complete National Pokedex, online gameplay. Everything I can need for a Pokemon game is there.
Alot of these characters i didnt even notice like professor sycamore’s assistants
I like how archie and maxie have their og designs instead of their oras ones
Red and Blue are technically 20 years older. They were 11 in Gen 1, and Gen 2 is in 1999, three years later.
I may be biased because it was my first but Sun / Moon is my favorite Pokemon game and one of my favorite games of all time. It looks great for a 3ds game has every single Pokemon (at the time). It has a good story with memorable characters such as Guzma and Lillie. It may have a slow paced beginning but I like that kind of stuff. It also has some interesting and creative designs such as the Tapus and Ultra Beasts.
Red looks like the dude that aged out of Pokemon Battles. He just wants to go the local tallest peak and wait...
Seeing Red and Blue made me honestly flabbergasted when i first played the games
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the logo on the back of Guzma's jacket is covered by a red X in the postgame, rather than being removed.
