Winter Reveals Gold Mine Hidden By Tree

  • We sometimes find gold mines hidden away in very unexpected places… Winter made this one easier to find, but being located right next to a town makes the mine’s presence a surprise to say the least. The workings I followed run right up underneath people’s homes. If only people in Gold Country really knew what was under their houses! I’d imagine more than a few home owners would have been surprised to know that a dirty mine explorer was crawling around just a few feet below their living rooms…
Then, of course, there is the fact that a mine set into a dirt hillside like this is normally caved, but we have the grand old tree to thank in this case for the mine being preserved. This isn’t the first time that trees have saved mines for us.
This abandoned gold mine was a bit of an oddball. The haulage adit was quite large - and, blasted through solid rock of a good strength, it would have been quite a job to get it open. And, remember, given the evidence that we saw underground, they were doing that by hand! However, the underground placer workings seemed pretty minimal and exploratory in nature. Did the gold miners have big ambitions that didn’t work out? Did this mine intersect one of the many other large gold mines in the area?
The mystery, of course, could be answered by knowing what was behind that collapse we encountered at the farthest point we reached on the haulage adit. Was there much behind it? Maybe… However, given the geology of the area and the course of the river, I don’t think there could have been much back there in regard to placer material. As I said in the video, they were WAY, WAY below where the ancient river channels run through the area and so it is out of the question that they were going after any placer material other than relatively contemporary leftovers. Also, the sweet spot for gold in placer deposits is where it hits the bedrock. Those workings were trending up and away from the bedrock when we hit that caved section. That’s why the idea of this mine tapping into another mine doesn’t seem as outlandish.
Perhaps this wasn’t even originally an underground placer gold mine at all? Perhaps that adit was run to provide additional access to one of the other large gold mines I mentioned and when the miners saw the placer material, they decided to check it out a little, but soon determined that it wasn’t worth the bother? Tough to say… We may never know because I couldn’t locate any history on this mine or even a name for it.
Regardless, it was a fun afternoon out in the woods (aside from the wet boots)…

    *****
Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Whenever you say " that goes nowhere " about gobbing that is blocking a passage or drift, thats most likely where the oldtimers stash their equipment.

I thought of you today while walking at Folsom Lake... The amount of exposed quartz would have driven a prospector crazy. It's amazing what's been exposed since the lake went in, eroding the banks away. Speaking of collapsing mines, do you remember the fatality in Alta back in 2006 when a house collapsed into a mine?
