I love this I've been hooked on the motherlode since 2018 I drove out from Boston lived in a van for 3 years living off gold , I not only did it but grew and learned so much and I have continued to repeat my Pioneering west and have found large specimen gold 🎉
World class prospectors for sure mike and world class movie! My favorite you have ever made! The story’s you told and the amazing things Ed have done wow! Thank you so much for sharing this
Ed Coogan is a legend in the goldmining world...and there is no better metal detectorist, plus he is a war hero! I have the pleasure of spending lots of time with Ed and his beautiful wife, Kate. Two of the finest people you will meet. He is 92, now and we were out metal detecting just 2 weeks ago in Mariposa County with more trips planned. Thank you for this video. Rusty
I'd give almost anything to join along some nugget hunting trips with Ed. I'm in Valley Springs, Calaveras County. I would even forfeit any gold found by me if that's what it would take. I do fairly well, I consistently find nuggets. But there is so much nuanced detail you only learn by being mentored by one of the greats, or making the same mistakes. And then, hopefully, you build on top of it. If that knowledge isn't passed on, who will iterate on it if you talk it home to the afterlife making the same mistakes Ed for sure made and I have and absolutely wil too again.
That’s awesome you got to spend some time with Ed, Kay and Johnny. Especially when they took you out in the motherload. That’s even better when Johnny found that piece of gold. I’m sure the ping from the metal detector was quit nice to here. Those are some amazing pieces of gold from Ed’s collection. Wow. Thanks for sharing those. I wish I could buy all them. Another great Vlog from Mike.
I used to manage an Airbnb and lived near Crystal Falls by Sonora and Twain Harte and i used to find lil nuggets all the time in the creeks up there and near roads where they cut near tree roots if there is quartz and black sand ... theres gold
Watching this makes me wonder why I was a few decades late getting into prospecting, being that I was born and raised in So Cal. Wonderful video commemorating your mentor Ed. Happy Hunting all.

Great video Mike. Wish I'd had the chance to meet Ed when my folks lived near the Harvard mine. Great idea to use a second detector with discrimination to keep from digging iron targets!
hello. so is the gold in this state combined with the quartz more valuable than the actual gold itself as a decorative piece or do they eventually process it out?
Hi Steve, gold found like this carries a premium as most gold is microscopic dust and only about 2% is found in nuggets or gold and quartz. A piece like this would fetch 1.3 to 1.5 spot price.
I am at a loss for words right now , the only word that keeps running through my mind is.... DREAM COME TRUE.... Thank you Mike for sharing these moments and making me feel Alive for Adventure 🙌👍. After I watched this, I immediately went and shared your channel with a new prospector. I want him to experience this eye candy.
Wow, thank you WheezingGeezer. This was a great story and Ed, a great friend, so it was an easy story to tell and epic location to tell it at. I appreciate the compliments.
This is particularly interesting to me because I used to pasture my horse on the Harvard mine property. This was several years before they dug that huge mine pit that left an awful scar on the land. My guess is there is still plenty of gold in the Mother Lode, especially in the Jamestown area.
You can still take gold out of the rivers in California. You just can’t dredge them. There are still rivers like the American river and the Yuba that you can take gold out of legally. But you can pan and you can use a very small sluce. None of it can be mechanical, but you can certainly use a sluce and pan for gold in the rivers in California. As well as metal detect.
Ya idk. With Cali losing people and then having open borders you’d think the politicians would be like. Hmm. We need to increase tax receipts so let’s open up the rivers to dredging at least for a couple years. Honestly they could close down a river and just up it up ever five or ten years if they’re super concerned about the environment but still care about making money in taxes.
But then again taxes from gold is a drop in the bucket probably compared to big tech. Did you know rich people in Cali can invest 50 million in a startup and sell it for 5 billion dollars and have it all be tax free. They sell the company and make it a public company listed in New York stock exchange or something but they can get 5 billion tax free. If the company sells above that they can roll the money over into a new company. It’s crazy the tax loopholes that exist. I remember talking to a realtor about it in Utah. He’s like well the tax loopholes help real estate boom here with all the tech companies and moving workers. It’s kind of crazy though lots of rich people invest 50 million and sell for 5 billion tax free. It’s amazing cause you rarely ever hear of tax free income
