    John, I always enjoy the restore videos and the viewer mail, but THIS video's mail segment is the most helpful advice I've gotten from your entire channel. I recently bought a ms pac for $125 it has a 60 in 1 and will need a lot of electronic work as the previous owners hacked the power cord and shorted the jamma adapter and 60 in 1. I'm not sure if an original Ms pac will plug and play with it but that's my end goal.
    Anyway the side and kick plate are pretty warn from the three decades of play and I've been trying to lie to my self and say that I enjoy the weathering on it as it shows that it's not just a new cab. However I am now planning it look in to the stencils and spray this old girl back to its original glory, or maybe even give it sex change and go for the original pacman.
    Thanks again John and to the person with the pac cab from this segment thank you for asking the questions I've been afraid to ask my self and good luck with your restore as well!!

    I leave some arcades OG, if its 100% and few dings ect it gives it character. There anit many left from 1980 untouched. I just got a centipede from a guy 100% original and he was just getting ready to drill hole for joystick for a jamma conversion! I flipped out so I bought it, 400 bucks but he delivered it. Carpet looks great to me John!

    So you check your fuses by placing them on a metal case. DURRR,

    Even if you're on a surface where a rolling tripod doesn't work, just having the camera mounted on the tripod and carrying it at the neck works brilliantly as a steadycam. It's heavier for sure, but the difference is huge and the result is damn near pro.

  • @DaveCurran
    @DaveCurran 9 лет назад +2

    CKT side = circuit side. Probably from the old single sided PCB days.

  • @jerodpark5929
    @jerodpark5929 9 лет назад

    You're right. If you get permission to film on location, your rolling tri-pod is the best answer, available. And, if you don't have that permission, you do want to keep it on the low down side. However, if you do want that in-between answer for steadier shots where that massive tri-pod is too much, get yourself a uni-pod. It's a single leg, straight down version of a tri-pod. Uses very little space. Extends for steady placement shots. Makes moving around super quick to do. And, when using it for handheld work, it gives a super useful counter-balance to really steady the shot. I've been using uni-pods for years and it's really unbelievable just how much it will improve the quality. Depending on where you shop, these should be reasonably priced. But...when on the down low, it just gives you away, all the more. But, here's the reason to consider one. When on location, with permission, in a tight space where things are everywhere or the place is happening with lots of people playing arcades, the uni-pod won't be demanding all that floor space. You just can't let go, is all. So, I really would consider adding one to your arsenal of options, as it's better then hand held, alone, and doesn't demand the cubic feet of the tri-pod version. In other words, it's like the 87/89/91 octane at the gas pump. More performance or subtler footprint or in-between. Another use for the uni-pod...super high shots. I can do some trick angles by hiking that camera way up into the air and pivoting it over the heads of others. In fact, I know exactly where that trick would be useful for you. When the warehouse is packed full of cabinets and you want to see over three of them to scope out that hidden gem. Uni-pod + remote for zoom. Basically, stuff a tri-pod isn't so great at. It's more like drone territory. There is no universally perfect solution. (Though, drones might solve that.) It's just choosing the right tool for each job.
    It's been forever and a day since I last looked in on the Nintendo e-Shop. Couldn't get the Outrun, though. Darn if I have a 2 GB card and it's still overflowing. Looks good for the price.
    The carpeting's just fine. Color matching after the initial install (especially after such a time period is difficult, if not impossible. It's as if the only time material coloring matches is when you buy it all off the same production line. Variance will happen...always.

    • @jerodpark5929
      @jerodpark5929 9 лет назад

      Note to anyone pondering the octane comment bit: Just wanted to add that with most modern vehicles, if your engine runs 87, use 87. It just won't know what to do with 91 and mostly wastes it. If your engine runs 91, using 87 can ruin it by being under powered. The opting to use different octanes applies to older vehicles and custom jobs that aren't so fine tuned. So, always run what your manual says to.

    CKT is the abbreviation for circuit.
    And when you broke the fuse I was in front of the screen screaming "No, don't try to pull it. It's one thing". Well happens. Looking forward to see if you get it running in the next video.

    Some notes for your quick play of Outrun on the 3DS.
    First, Outrun was never on the NES, after all it's a SEGA game. It was originally ported to the Master System (there were also ports later on for the Megadrive, Saturn and Dreamcast).
    As for OLD and NEW, it appears that the OLD version is the original Japanese version, whereas NEW was the world version. The difference is the first stage is slightly different right at the start (the initial road split is much shorter) and some (not all) of the stages are in a different order.
    And for the Ferrari logo being different, that would be a licensing issue, as Outrun was originally made long before car licensing became an issue in games, and they likely didn't have a license to use the logo in the 3DS port.

    Hey John,
    Perhaps when you test a fuse for continuity you place the fuse on a non conductive surface? I have watched nearly all of your vids and learned a lot over the years but that was dumb-ass!

    Great video John. Someone else has probably already mentioned this, but the logo of the back of the car in Outrun used to be the Ferrari Prancing Horse, however, I suspect that Sega don't have the Ferrari license anymore meaning that they had to change the Ferrari logo to something else.

  • @Helvetica_Scenario
    @Helvetica_Scenario 9 лет назад

    Yeah, John, the car sprite is different on 3DS Outrun because Sega don't have the Ferrari license. With the arcade original, they just made the car a Ferrari without permission and got away with it. In new versions of the game, they change the sprite to avoid a lawsuit. The "New" game on 3DS runs at 60 fps, while the "Old" version runs at the arcade 30 fps.

    Hi John,
    Have you tried using either wire wool or Scotch-brite when getting rust off of metal parts? It cleans surface rust up a treat and doesn't scratch the hell out of the plating like sanding does. Plus you can get Scotch-brite in different grades Coarse to fine.
    Also if you want to restore the plating, there are kits you can get to do it yourself with a car battery charger.
    I've just found your channel and am enjoying the nostalga and especially the restore videos. Keep up the tech vids.

    My guess with the Outrun thing, the reason the logo on the car is different is because Ferrari would sue the piss out of them if they used that Ferrari horse on the car. The car is obviously modeled off a Ferrari Testarossa, so my guess is that in the 80's they got away with it, but in 2015 with everyone being sue crazy, they didn't want to risk Ferrari suing them.
    Just a guess. Great video!

    oh man tough break about that fuse! can't wait to see future updates to your Jump Bug project, though. I did get my usb joystick up and working again, though I'm debating on doing a full swap from pushbutton microswitches to leaf ones since I got a handful from someone online who hooked me up! I also recieved a new stick assembly, but I'm unsure if I can make it fit inside... but i'll look into it.
    Oh and on the 3D OutRun, yeah I guess SEGA couldn't get the Ferrari license so the car had to be modified slightly, but I'm hearing it's a good port otherwise.
    Great video though!

    Hey John, The Ferrari Horse logo might have had to be changed due to licensing issues from the 80's. Also: Nintendo have also released some pretty cool 3D (3DS) versions of Space Harrier, Afterburner and Galaxy Force II that are worth checking out. Space Harrier in 3D is done really well and is one of my favs. I think they are around 5-6 bucks each. Worth it.

    Hi John nice vid as always! Sega no longer has the Ferrari licence hence why the main player sprite has been modified on the 3Ds version. I hear that the classic Sega 'super scaler' games Space Harrier, Afterburner 2 and Galaxy force 2 are pretty good on the 3DS and worth a purchase. Would like to see you check out those in the future!

  • @JVeg199X
    @JVeg199X 9 лет назад

    John, your brief look at 3D OutRun didn't do it justice! Besides the facts that it's 3D, widescreen, 60fps, and there's no Ferrari, it looks and plays the same as the arcade version! You can mess with the settings and change it back to 4:3 ratio. The "Old" version is supposedly an early Japan-only version of the ROM, so if you want to properly compare it to your arcade OutRun, you have to set it to "New."
    P.S., you should totally read this series of interviews if you really want to know everything that's going on with this version of the game: blogs.sega.com/2015/03/05/sega-3d-classics-3d-out-run-part-1/
