The Nonpareil (1907) - Scott Joplin (With Score / Sheet Music)

  • The cover with Uncle Sam holding the US flag would possibly indicate for this to be a patriotic march or fast two-step. However, it is actually a pleasantly paced Classic Rag, containing Joplin's now expected note, "NOTICE: Do not play this piece fast. It is never right to play "Ragtime" fast." Based on this and the French title, it is possible that publisher John Stark or his daughter named the piece, possibly even based on the current cover art availability. However, Joplin may have also had a say in the name, since there were various bars and performance venues named "Nonpareil" present in some of the locations where the composer resided.
The carefully quiet A section allows for a honorable introduction to Joplin's new experimentation with variations on the ragtime format in the B. From here, Joplin would utilize a flowing left hand melodic line underneath chords, alternating with a right hand melody in return. The C section reflects similarity to many of his lush trios of this era, though less complex harmonically, serving a suitable passage into the D section. This portion of the work being well syncopated, almost to the point of sounding improvisational, and sharing the end of the B section in an expression of unity and continuity.
Note that the title term came into the American lexicon in the mid-1880s in association with Irish-born boxer, "Nonpareil" Jack Dempsey (the original, not the 1920s fighter who took the same name), who remained undefeated in 41 bouts from 1883 to 1889. He had managed to remain mostly victorious in subsequent bouts over the next few years until his untimely death in 1895 at age 33 from tuberculosis. While there may be no direct association between Dempsey and the Joplin piece, his extraordinary career and national fame may have certainly kept the word floating around in the public's consciousness for many years afterwards.

Personally, I think of this as one of his weaker masterpieces.

@@GavinLepley Sounds fair enough to say. Not as complex structural wise and more mellow with ease in comparison to the works that precede this one and in the future. 😌

Hello to you 👋🏻 thanks for sharing this one! I really like the Nonpareil! It does have some patriotic elements and sounds in the A section and it’s so soothing 😊 this is a feel good piece and I love how calming it is; it’s not complexly structured, nor is it super upbeat or “bouncy” as we like. Just a feel-good rag overall! I do plan on learning this one one day. Congrats on 500 subs 🎉🥳 first like 😊

      Howdy howdy, Ms. Anz. 😆😆
It really is a feel good piece, I'm not sure what it is about it but it's tranquility really makes it stand out amongst Joplin's catalog. Suppose he may have gotten tired keeping up with the pace of his more usual upbeat works and wanted to take it down a notch. 🤣
Good luck on learning to play this one, you'll knock it down easy. 😌
And yeahh, thank you, thank you. 🥳🎉
Crazy to see me already make it there. 😳

@@themajesticgeorge hello 😊👋🏻 yes, this piece definitely is feel-good, and sometimes we need that instead of the jumpy and up-beat sounding tunes. Hahaha, yes, maybe Joplin was tired of creating “faster” paced and happy sounding rags all the time 😂 I agree that its tranquility makes it stand out!
Thank you, yeah this is an easy piece it seems like! I’ll learn it at some point haha, it’s on my Joplin list 😂
      Well, soon enough you’ll hit 1k!!! ❤️

      And maybe so. 😌
Something tells me you'll beat me to it first however. 😉

@@themajesticgeorge haha I sure do have about 10 Joplin rags on my radar right now 😂 why not, they’re all so fun and superb, each rag learnt leaves me wanting to learn another one! I do eventually want to venture out to learn other composers such as James Scott or Joseph Lamb, and I do have you to thank that tbh as I discovered lots of cool compositions and noted my favorite ones down from your compiled videos! I hope you’re not sick of all my Joplin covers so far 😅 jk haha
Ohhh no, you’re gonna hit the 1k milestone first without a doubt! I would love for you to have all the ragtime fans subscribed to you! You’re a key 🔑 in keeping the genre intact 😃
I just want to cross into the 500 mark, that would make me happy. I honestly didn’t think I’d get more than 100 subs ever 😅
Anyway, sorry, I’m rambling again 🙃😆

@@Natt_piano Definitely felt you on the wanting to learn another one part. 🤣🤣
No matter how many different pieces I end up playing at the piano, I always come back to playing Ragtime in the end. 😆
And ah, I'm glad to hear that! 😌 My hope through my compiled videos, or videos in general I suppose, is for people to discover new music here and there. :]
(I've tried learning a bit of James Scott meself but oh man, my piano skills got me locked in tight. Some of his right hand melodies are a killer. 😭)
And not at all! I always enjoy taking a listen to your covers. :D
Sureee, sureee, we'll see about that also. 😝 Thank you for the kind words however, it's always been a pleasure to share the love of this genre. 😌
And hey, you'd be suprised! You'll cross that in no time. And no need to apologize, speak your mind away to your hearts desire! Who's gonna stop you? 😎
