I reckon this was a super fun project. I like all the boxes and I'm unsure which one I like the best. I could certainly do a better job if I were to do them again but that's just the way it goes when trying something new.

doh, been wanting to do the cosman style hinges for a while, but didnt figure out a good way to drill the center hole, your solution is SO simple, and SO good!

Glad you liked it. I reckon Rob's tools would be more accurate but if you don't mind messing around setting it up (and possible re-drilling the odd one) it does work. :)

One of the things I really anjoy in your videos is the simple yet highly intelligent procedures you come up with to solve problems. For example, the method you show for drilling the dowels dead center is pure genius. The simple solutions are always the best and you're the master of working these out and to our immense benefit, including them in the videos.

what I really love about this channel is that he never shy away from showing mistakes yet still managed to produce such elegant works, and I dont know..... Australians are very likable.
Except that he's a Pom. But I agree about him showing the mistakes, owning up to them, and explaining how he fixed them.

I can barely cut a straight line on the table saw and you cut that nearly perfectly with a hand saw. Love watching your videos, but I despair of ever being a tenth as skilled :-)

The good news is the counselling for my inferiority complex has been bought forward. The bad news is after this video I am going to need a lot more. Yet more superb work and ideas.
I'm always amazed at how much can go into the making of a "simple" box. It's frustrating because we say to ourselves "Oh, this should be pretty simple". But it never is. We get so wrapped up in trying to make it perfect that we sacrifice the fun. At least I tend to do that. Thanks for showing the various hinge techniques.
To have worked with wood for several years, it is a real pleasure to watch your immense talent, but the people who watch you must know that it takes a lot of patience and determination to achieve such a result. And congratulations, you are super well equipped with tools

Although the hidden hinge box had a small glue line, it was still an amazing result. Seriously, these boxes are brilliant and I turned to my Wife and said I have to give some of these a go. Thanks to you for sharing, as well as Rob Cosman, it‘s been very inspiring.

Always a smart, simple (ok not always simple!) way to do everything - at least when Neil is involved - loved the inverse drilling idea on the tiny dowels.

I'm a fine woodworker, "maker" as well. I 100% respect your gangster. One of the best my friend. Keep this coming. Gives me ideas and inspiration for my builds
Good idea with scraping the leather first. My best guess however, is what you scraped off, is waterproofing. If you scrape it off though, there's a risk of tearing the leather so maybe, instead of scraping it, you can go over it with acetone or rubbing alcohol. If you don't know how to tell if it's waterproofing or not, just use a pipelet or something and put a few water droplets onto the leather. If it soaks in, it's not waterproof but if it just stays there, then it's waterproof. The waterproofing will prevent water based glues from sticking which could be why you previously had trouble gluing the leather, so I hope this helps :)
I've tried acetone before and it didn't help, I've also tried scuffing it with sandpaper and that didn't help either. I've tried half a dozen different glues, not just water based ones and nothing works. :)

I think that my favourite one is the box with the leather in it, I love the inset hinges and the Yosegi on the top. The last hinge was really amazing as well. 👍

OK, putting the bit in the vise and then putting the dowel in the chuck is brilliant!! I would have tried and tried to drill into the dowel and ended up having a fit, destroying everything, selling my tools and finding a new hobby

They are all lovely boxes but my favourite hinge is without doubt the one with the small square hinges (the third one). When they are made so carefully and with such attention to detail it is a feast for the eyes and deserves to be on display. As winter is getting closer day by day, and more time will be spent in the workshop, I will definitely attempt to make a box with hinges like that 😀

I've watched the hinge series a couple of times now, gotta say that the box joint hinges on the outside are becoming my favorite. The Rob Cosman style I've done and it always brings some satisfactory ooh's and ahh's , but there's a very definite appeal to the detail in those little box joint hinges. Gonna have to give 'em a go.

Nicely done. The Rob Cosman hinge method is almost exactly the way jewelers make hinges.

I've been making leather goods for a couple years. If you want a proper bond with leather, contact cement is the way to go, and if the surface to glue is too pristine it's a good thing to rough it up with a mid grit sandpaper before applying the glue.

For a few of the boxes I made, since I had to change the design, i used my bandsaw to cut the lid off since it has a finer cut than the table saw, that for me worked since I do not have nice vice like you or that large of a pull saw. :) These are super cool boxes! I may have to try some of those designs :)

Beautiful work! Just a suggestion on a good leather adhesive. I do bookbinding and use a 50/50 mix of PVA glue for bookbinding.. you can find it on Amazon.. and wheat paste that I make up at home.. there are recipes for that online.. quick google search will get that.
I bought a few more hand tools, old school miter box, more clamps... it could take generations for me to get even close to what Pask can do... but I am trying to apply what I am learning. Thanks for the motivation and happy distraction during this odd time

Four of the prettiest little boxes I think I've ever seen! Such nice work, Pask!
You can get the leather properly roughed for gluing with some simple sandpaper, and you might see better results with a contact cement. I've done it that way for many years with excellent results.
This particular leather is a real problem to glue. I've tried scuffing with sandpaper and scrubbing it with acetone before using contact adhesive. Neither of those methods have worked. :)
If I may offer a suggestion, don't glue the brass rod in, just mushroom one end, countersink that end in slightly. If you glue it in and the unfortunate happens, broken hinge. You'll then up replacing the brass rod instead of re-using it. I've had to repair a few boxes I've made in the past with wooden hinges because some people were a bit abusive to the box. I've always re used the brass pins. Love the builds, cheers :)
