For people who like early Settlers games I can recommend free and open source game called Widelands. It's an improved "clone" based on Settlers II with nice old school style graphics, pleasant relaxing background sounds and very nice UI. The game was created for people who were disappointed with newer games in the series and was released for Linux, MacOS and Windows.
I agree. With Settlers 4 the game play was: Here is you, there is the enemy. Now you figure out how to win. I loved it Playing Settlers 6 and 7 it is so scripted I feel more like a dog being led around on a leash.
I've found one problem with S4 .The trade system with donkeys is pretty buggy especially if you have made too much donkeys, maybe it is avoidable but still kinda annoying.
Same. I never made it far when I was a kid. I didn't have the patience for it. Now (a little older and patient) I completed almost every mission in the three races campaign
The Settlers 5 Heritage of Kings might look completely different from the rest of the franchise and it might not look like it's that incredible but the world was beautiful, the music was incredible, you learn to love each of the voices of the characters (even if the unceasing quips whenever you make anyone do anything might seem annoying at first), and the game actually has an incredible story campaign with cool and funny characters that makes you do wildly varied tasks in various very unique and open maps It's a shame there'll never be another The Settlers game like this because it's undoubtedly one of the awesome games that marked my childhood forever edit : i also recommend the game to any french people because i played it in french and the quality of the va was very good
No. You're all wrong. The "Original" first game on the Amiga is the best! Especially the music. Simple and charming. Maybe too simple. But my nostalgia will not be argued with! ~ {Luv ya's all!}
The Settlers 5 could be more successful if it wasn't part of the series. It had great gameplay, even if it was repetitive. Amount of type of units, ability to upgrade units and buildings, economy, even heroes and story. Everything was really great, but not as Settlers' game. I really liked Settlers 3 and 4, but I could pay instantly for upgraded version of Settlers 5.
Whenever the characters starts talking to you, I instantly feel like its Age of Empires instead. Needless to say, I only played The Settlers IV and are going right now to find it again, what a masterpiece
When I was young i used to play AoE1 a lot, One day my dad was angry at me (probably for a justifiable reason but I was only 4 or 5, ahaha) and snapped the disk in half. He later regretted it and we searched a few pc stores to try and get a new copy, this is maybe 2001/2002? Unfortunately we lived in a village with not many places nearby at the time, and struggled to find a new copy. After giving up, he said to just pick a game that looks interesting and i could have it. That would lead me to finding Settlers 3. As a child I was drawn to the similar medieval themes since I was looking for AoE, but i found something completely different. Despite being 5, I fell in love with the game and played it often on the family computer, I would some years later get Settlers 4, and I enjoyed that similarly. Time went on and the disks didn't really function on new OSs so I didn't really play it anymore. I've grown up a lot, and play lots of different games. I even purchased some digital copies of GoG, which brought back nostalgia. Such wonderful games that definitely aged well. I find a nice spiritual successor to these games is Northgard. There are some differences but I feel at it's core, they share a similarity i do enjoy. Though Settlers 3 and 4 have more colony management aspects whilst Northgard is more focused on combat.

what was so bad about it? i havent played any settlers games past 2.. visually it seemed the best one on that video after settlers II .. they tried to turn it into some "settler mmo" or smt?
Yeah, it's really good game, but people didn't like it as Settlers' game, that's why it wasn't very successful. I would love another part with similar gameplay, I prefer it more than in Settlers 6 and 7. I loved upgrading buildings and units. I wish units could have more bonuses against other type of units, like in Age of Empires (they have them actually, but I'm not sure they work). And we could have some AI for matches.
