I wish to heck the client would have said to you that they "really want these corals Chris" they say they were dipped but is there anything else we should do to protect our beautiful tank! Peace. I feel ya.
I have had same experience purchased coral lucky me found a bad worm hiding in it. I purchased a few corals every single one died from a deseas. I now buy from stores that only quarantine it cost more but worth it. Thanks for sharing because now I know I am not the only person this happens too.
Great video, great premise, great mission. Keep it up I personally fail to understand why the aquarium industry, as professionals, fail to do there most basic job and care for the animals they sell. Every shop should quarantine fish. And it's a growing expectation from hobbiest's, because so many shops fail to do so. Great job bucking that trend.
A Scopas Tang taught me to quarantine! It was the final fish on my stocking list. The LFS told me that it had been there for 3 months. It ate great… It looked great… And it came with a free case of Marine Velvet. From completely stocked to completely fallow in a week!!! Now I keep a 36 bowfront cycled in my home office for quarantine. It ain’t pretty, but it does the job. Copper Power at 2.5 for 30 days, followed by 2 doses of PraziPro 5 days apart…For every single fish. Corals, inverts, etc… they get the 3 months alone/fallow treatment. Corals can also bring in fish disease/parasites, although probably not that common. Whatever is in that water, will get in your tank.
I think QT is a must when dealing with new fish. But corals, I think a very thorough examination of the coral and skeleton can get rid of a lot. But im talking magnifying glass, bright light, tweezers, razor blade, etc. And then, placing corals at bottom of tank for a day or two before dipping. Local corals I'll dip same day.
I’ve always removed the plugs and scraped / scrubbed the base of my sps then redipped. Zoa get scraped off dipped and super glued back to a frag or rock rubble
I know I would pay more for a coral or a fish that didn't come with something extra on it or in it. In my 100 gallon I am now battling an Aiptasia and Valencia outbreak coz one small coral frag had them hidden in it even after dipping and now I look at the literal hundreds of $$$ I am now spending on emerald crabs and Berghias, at least in the states your prices are lower than here in Canada. It's "amusing" when you call your LFS and tell them their $120 zoo has pests their excuse is well they come from the ocean what do you expect. I expect a little more care as you said from the sellers who are just looking for that quick buck. Reminds me of my visits to Shanghai - there is a common precept in China that they would rather have the sale today rather than build up any loyalty with repeat customers, this is too how I see the hobby going here. Greed.
Yea very interested bout have to restart my whole tank and rock work because of varmited snails In process now setting up a coral qt had a fish qt 1 for bout a year now.
show us how you treat and QT your fish and coral your method and steps so we can all take good steps for the health of the animals and the hobby :) Also call out stores and online sellers for this practice its unacceptable if you buy they should be doing the right thing if not they need called out on it
It's illegal to sell sick, dogs/puppies and cats/kittens. It should be illegal to sell sick fish/corals. The thinking in reefing is upside down. The customers shouldn't buy into the train of thought that getting quartined fish is a service. Or we need to set up a quarantine tank, all fish sellers are really doing is being a middle man and a bad one at that if they can't sell healthy fish or stand behind their produce with a warranty. There shouldn't be a mark up for quaranitining. Breeders don't charge for selling healthy cats and dogs. We as customers should start to set that expectation.
It’s just a fact that quarantining takes manual labor, salt, supplies, electricity, etc. That stuff isn’t free and any business not charging for it is doomed to fail.
@timjohnson3913 You know this as someone who bought and sold fish? ( which for the record is marked up by 2 - 3 times the cost, I know this because I buy fish from retailers. In every other business the marked is usually a quarter, 25% not 100 - 200 %) We are being ripped off, under the guise of "good business". How much is minimum wage? How much is the one-time "supplies" they have to buy. Stores get special pricing on salt and medication because they buy in bulk. We are being robbed, period end of story. When they get called on it, they scare monger about going out of business. If someone can NOT sell quality products, i.e., healthy fish/coral... YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE IN BUSINESS.
@timjohnson3913 also going to how I start the statement... The price of cats and dogs has decreased. While it's recent laws that mandates the selling of vaccinated animals... Their cost involves multiple Vet visits. Which btw cost WAY more that the "labor" you eluded to for quaratining fish... We all deserve healthy pets, don't accept anything less.
@@audiomanmik I know that quarantining is a ton of time, effort, space and money, because I do it myself. I would never expect to get a quarantined fish as the same price of a non quarantined fish. You said quarantined fish is not a service; that’s the only part I disagree with. I agree with everything else you are saying.
I opened a small shop a few years ago....i can absolutely assure you two things a fish store must do imo...be picky about distributors and two....not have a wall of shared water....but it genuinely doenst matter what you do....ppl still think theyre going to a frag swap and saving money ....i get customers all the time that ask if im going....i always respond with....id never risk my tanks or business going to those chop shops....i used to like those events as a noobie hobbyist too....bc i also didnt realize what a total scam it actually was 😂
I quarantine all fish and corals. It’s not only heart wrenching to lose your tank to a pest/disease, it’s irresponsible to all the healthy life that is currently living in your aquarium, most of which was pulled out of the ocean and is being asked to live in an undersized container in your house for your enjoyment.
No not A PUFFER. Very sad when idiots buy and sell fish. This is why I truly believe nothing should come from the ocean anymore. Everything should be aquaculture
Very interested in how to set up coral quarentine and quarentine process. Please do video
I would definitely love to see a video of how to Quarantine both fish and coral step by step, would be every interesting and helpful
Noted!

If you’re gonna quarantine your fish, then you must quarantine your corals because of coral can carry ick on it !
