Good video, one suggestion would be to actually show replacement of the torque sensor, not just the motor sensor assembly. There are a couple steps for making sure the sensor is lined up properly. Also, after replacing the torque sensor it needs to be recalibrated using a scan tool with special functions for the system to work properly. I replaced a lot of these at the dealer I used to work at.
I noticed that it calls to be recalibrated. Could you tell me if I have to have fix assist scanner to recalibrate or can I just use a harbour freight scan tool to do this? The dealer told us before that they couldn't get a scan tool to work on our car for some reason. Thanks so much if you have the time to respond.
@@christopherw4527 Sorry for the late reply, the notification showed up in a different email folder. I can't tell you if fix assist works or not as I have not used that brand or any scanners from Harbor freight. I've used GM factory scanners, Snap-on and Matco scanners. I would assume any decent full fledged scan tool with special functions menu will be capable of it. A generic Code Reader or scanner that only does powertrain/airbag/abs probably won't because you have to communicate with the Electric power steering module(computer) to be able to access this special function. There are two calibrations to do. One is torque sensor calibration, the other is steering angle sensor calibration. there may be one other one i'm forgetting. Hope this still helps after 5 months

If you already did the motor, I would go with the torque sensor. Same steps to get to it and has a snap ring holding it. Does your steering wheel jerk and twitch around?

Great vid man, gonna help me out a lot. I got the whole assembly also. Two questions what were the symptoms before the repair. And how do I center the new assembly I got mine off eBay and don't know if it's centered or not
Steering wheel would not center and would lock up when attempting to turn. There was also a message on the DIC. We turned the assembly all the way to one lock, then counted the full turns to the other lock. Divide that number by 2 and turn back that many. Should be close to center.
Great video. Great explaining! Exactly how long did it take to complete this from from start to finish. Not counting the hassle of making the video? Or should I say how long should this take the average mechanic?
The yellow and red airbag electrical clip on top of the steering column will not come off.. is there a trick to this? I work on our vehicles myself 90 percent of the time..never had a clip fight me like this.. anyone have any pointers before i get crazy on it? Everything else has went smooth so far

If it was recent that the dealer serviced it, you might take it back to them and have them inspect it again. Sounds like they didn't fix it properly the first time.
We did not have to program it. We just made sure that the steering wheel was centered between the rotations. We turned it lock to lock and counted full turns. Then went back to center.
@@BreannaFranks-Softball-SSCFRHP Did yours have a mind of its own and turn the wheels to full lock? I just put a new sensor on my sister's car and it did that.. I'm hoping that a calibration will fix that problem!

Hello, great video...How did u put the steering wheel back on the shaft? For some reason mine won't slide back on the shaft. Is there a special thing u have to do?
So if I need to have a mechanic repair this for me, what is the approximate amount of time it would take to fix it. I don't want to be overcharged. Thanks.
I am not sure. They have a designated amount of time they charge that is preset by a labor guide. Each and every possible job is already predetermined based on vehicle options. Labor and parts is usually pretty close to 50/50 at a dealership.
I’m getting the ESC light and vibration in steering wheel where it’s locking up. Will replacing it resolve this issue or is this the assist motor and is that separate
Brandon Morrison hey Brandon did you replace your pump too cause I’m still having the same problem. Still vibrating but the wheel is super loose. When I plug the power steering pump into the power steering assist is when it starts acting up

That is the same issues this car was having, as well as the ESC on the information center. We replaced both the motor and torque sensor on this car and it was corrected
No sir, I do not. We went to the pull-a-part and got the entire steering column with the motor and sensor still on it. I think we paid $80 for the entire assembly. That car probably has 50,000 miles on it since we did the repair and still no issues
You can buy a new torque sensor on Amazon for about $120.00. That's probably all you need to replace. I wouldn't use used parts, who knows if they're good. You don't want to do this job twice if you can help it.
Every car can have a different problem. If you plan on keeping the car, and have the funds, I would recommend both. Simply to to keep from having to take it all out if the one you do does not fix the problem.

I have 2011 chevy malibu got from carmax, months went by and the electric power steering had a whine when i did a uturn so they sent me to a local chevrolet dealer. $1000+ to fix didnt have to pay carmax payed good business. Anyway after i received my vehicle i notice by the key ignition the trim was not flushed correctly , the dimmer knob on the left was not functioning and sometimes my clister will flicker not to mention the brightness at night didnt have this problem before i dropped it off. I called got told to call "carmax to have them fix it". So guess they wanted more money for there mistake. This video helps me fix a dealers mistake thank you
Great video. Which tool did you use to take off the two motor bolts?
This video helped the bunch thank you very much
REALLY Great Video!!!!! Thank you 😊
(I’d of added starting it and showing the system works …. )
Secondly I am swapping with complete motor torque sensor and computer module, still I need programming?
So I just put the assembly in and hooked it all up and just tested it. There is no shake in the steering wheel any more and the power steering works great. There is still a power steering/ esc message tho if i drive it a bit will it cycle the monitors and turn the light off?
That's good news. Not sure about the message though. We did not have a message on ours. It might reset. You might unhook the battery for 5-10 minutes and it might clear itself
How did you replace the sensor on the shack of the steering wheel
How can l get a shop to do this replacement. I live in Atlanta. My 08 malibu car has power steering problem
Hi. If I have a bad electric power steering motor n I put on a new intermediate shaft can it go bad because of the bad power steering motor. 2008 chevy malibu lt.
My power steering is off and my dash says service esc and traction... Could this be the solution to my problem
This is my exact problem today 🤦🏾♀️ I don’t have 560 some dollars for repairs right now smh
Did you have a recalibrate the torque sensor before you did anything else
I maybe having to do this to my 2005 chevy in the very near future. This will be a big help. I do have a few questions though. Thank you
How did you loosen the pinch bolt?? I can't get it off!
Elbow grease!
how did you align the steering back in? Like to slide in and line the holes up for the bolts under holding the wheel? My wheel goes in so far but doesn't align the holes for the bolts
How did you take the steering wheel off the torque sensor I pulled the whole wheel and power steering out of the car
Hi how you pull the Stering wheel out of the other part to replace a torque angle sensor thanks
25:43, I can't get one side of the 2 parts to snap together, solutions?
Awsome video, just ordered the parts today (both torque and eps). They are used so i have no idea the position of the car its coming off of. The eps and the torque sensor are being shipped together as a single unit so more then likely they are coming off the same vehicle. I should get them in a few days and I'll let you know the result. Such as if i had to have a tech calibrate it or anything like that.
My car: 2010 chevy malibu 2.4 ecotech
Thanks for video!
and what was the result?

I have a 2012 and I believe my steering is also going out. So I tried to go the cheap route and I only bought the motor part and now my ESC and steering is going off. Can you make it just buying one part or should I just break down and go to auto zone and get a new one?
If you already did the motor, I would go with the torque sensor. Same steps to get to it and has a snap ring holding it. Does your steering wheel jerk and twitch around?
@@brandonmorrison1409 yes and the the ESC come on again this morning. I knew I was taking a a list when I bought the part you but I was trying to go to cheap route so it look like I'm going to have to just buy a brand new one. my car has over 221,000 miles I travel due to my job so if you think it's best to just replace it with a brand new one do you know of any places to get it because here in Texas or at the AutoZone it's about $500 for a brand new
And again thanks for your support and help
@@orlandowilliams5309 It definitely sounds like the torque sensor. You might try Rockauto.com or the dealership. Those sensors are expensive either way I think. The car I did it on was over 200k on miles as well. Good luck to you.
@@brandonmorrison1409 thanks again
Very good video. Thanks. My son and I have lots of work to do this weekend on a 2006 Malibu he just bought. have ordered the power steering motor, among other parts I know that I need, but cannot seem to find the torque sensor assembly for the 2006. Not available for this year? Thanks again!
Hi Brandon do you know if the module and torque 2009 Malibu LS can fit in the 2010 LS malibu ?
Having change heater core so have take the whole dash panel apart, so the power steering control was in the way of getting to the brackets that hold dash on back of fire wall.
Was the steering wheel straight?
When you plugged in the new components did you have to reprogram them to the vehicle or was it plug & play?
Great vid man, gonna help me out a lot. I got the whole assembly also. Two questions what were the symptoms before the repair. And how do I center the new assembly I got mine off eBay and don't know if it's centered or not
Steering wheel would not center and would lock up when attempting to turn. There was also a message on the DIC. We turned the assembly all the way to one lock, then counted the full turns to the other lock. Divide that number by 2 and turn back that many. Should be close to center.
Ok so take the old assembly off off and use the steering wheel to center the new one?
After getting this done, did you have to get the dealership to program it?
Thanks for the upload!
I did not have to have these programmed. I am not sure if we got lucky or what. The car is still going strong with no steering issues
@@brandonmorrison1409 thanks for the quick reply. Mine isn't acting up anymore either.
Great video. Great explaining! Exactly how long did it take to complete this from from start to finish. Not counting the hassle of making the video? Or should I say how long should this take the average mechanic?
Without making the video, I could probably complete this again in roughly 30 minutes to an hour
Without the knowledge of doing it once already, probably 1 to 2 hours
I have a 2008 Chevy Malibu and the power steering is gone out, did you have to calibrate your torque sensor once you installed it.
We did not. I am not sure if it was because these parts were used or not. However, we didn't have to have any calibrations done.
The yellow and red airbag electrical clip on top of the steering column will not come off.. is there a trick to this? I work on our vehicles myself 90 percent of the time..never had a clip fight me like this.. anyone have any pointers before i get crazy on it? Everything else has went smooth so far
After regrouping and deep breaths, i got it
Yeah definitely made it seem more doable. How do you know if you have to replace that torque sensor or just the electric motor?
It's almost never the motor from what I've heard. The sensor going bad tells the motor to constantly twitch the wheel.
Thank you thank you thank you!! This is my second time changing it due to your very detailed video!!! This time I’m having a problem with my steering wheel it is not stopping at all it just keeps turning!! So what does that mean so I can reassemble everything??
Your clock spring may be broken. You have to be careful with them. They are really fragile.
Do u know what tool you used for the back bolts
Question: I had my power steering done on my malibu. Went to the dealer 2wice to get power steerin reset. My PS light still pops on along with traction control light..I have No idea Y....plz help 🙁
If it was recent that the dealer serviced it, you might take it back to them and have them inspect it again. Sounds like they didn't fix it properly the first time.
Did you figure out what was wrong?
Replace the BCM
Thanks for the great video! Does the new one need to programmed after installation?
We did not have to program it. We just made sure that the steering wheel was centered between the rotations. We turned it lock to lock and counted full turns. Then went back to center.
I had to have mine calibrated. Had nothing to do with lining up steering wheel
@@BreannaFranks-Softball-SSCFRHP Did yours have a mind of its own and turn the wheels to full lock? I just put a new sensor on my sister's car and it did that.. I'm hoping that a calibration will fix that problem!
Ben Anderson I had one do that too!
@@benanderson8851 did calibration fix that locking ?
That's a really good video. I've got a 09 saturn aura where the steering wheel will twitch occasionally, no codes are coming up. Should i just change the motor or the whole assembly?
I am not sure. Has it locked up on you? Is there an ESC message?
@@brandonmorrison1409 No sir.. Hasn't locked up, no messages on the dash and it's smooth except for the twitch. I started googling things because i know nothing about the electric power steering and saw all these issues for the GM cars.
I have a 06 malibu would it be that much of a difference or is it more or less the same thing?
Possibly. I've never done one, but I'm sure if it is electronic style and hot hydraulic, then it will be a lot like this. You will have to inspect your vehicle and check it out
@@brandonmorrison1409 cool thanks for responding.
The diagnosis that I got was for the Power Steering Control Module. Is that another name for the entirety of this, motor and sensor? Or a completely different part??
That’s my question?
Did this throw a code when it went out?
Does urs what code
Where do you buy the new power steering motor
Here is a refurbished one from Rock Auto

Did you have a follow up video on replacing the sir coil?
I had this done to my malibu yesterday..had to replace torque sensor but now steering wheel spins to left by itself..lol..not good..do it need to be calibrated on a computer? Just curious..goin to dealership tomorrow
Definitely go back to where the work was done. Sounds like there may be an issue with the repair

@@woozie709zzz What happened in the follow up. Did they calibrate it and dis they charge u?
If I replace the torque sensor should I replace the motor also?
How close do you think this is to being the same procedure as an 05 Pontiac G6?
I'm not 100% sure but, from what research I have done, the sensors and motors are interchangeable. So the bolt locations for all the panels might be different, but once you get to it, the rest should be the same.
Vinnie Rowz Probably the same on Pontiac G6 My Electronic Power steering went on my my Pontiac G6 Its all these clips & panels that have to be removed for one Piece of shit part that goes without warning
What's the reason u change that
It's the same I have an 06 G6 with this bs EPS and mines scary af wish it would just stop working till I can get the time and parts from a junkyard to replace lol
What scanner was used. I didn't know the motor needed to be recalibrated
I was told my power steering light is on cause my module needs replaced. Is that in the same spot as all this. I have a Malibu
How does the shaft make a click noise and stops at six turns?....clock spring?
great vid. so was the motor bad or was it the torque sensor? my 2012 malibu keeps saying power steering service ESC. turn car off and back on the power steering comes back for a short while then goes out again. any idea if its my torque sensor or motor assist? thanks
I can't answer for sure. We replaced both. My guess would probably be the sensor
Where did you find the torque sensor / steering column as a single unit? Thanks
@@cagedracer a local salvage yard. We bought the entire column for about $100
So if the light comes on and off and drives regular some time what show I do.
Can you Make a video on how to program the new once with a scan tool
Hello, great video...How did u put the steering wheel back on the shaft? For some reason mine won't slide back on the shaft. Is there a special thing u have to do?
One of the splines is bigger than the rest. You will have to align those to get it to slide together.
Brandon Morrison ok thanks a lot I will try to align them tomorrow
So if I need to have a mechanic repair this for me, what is the approximate amount of time it would take to fix it. I don't want to be overcharged. Thanks.
I am not sure. They have a designated amount of time they charge that is preset by a labor guide. Each and every possible job is already predetermined based on vehicle options. Labor and parts is usually pretty close to 50/50 at a dealership.
I’m getting the ESC light and vibration in steering wheel where it’s locking up. Will replacing it resolve this issue or is this the assist motor and is that separate
That is the same problem that this vehicle was having.
Ok... perfect gonna order a new one today. Great video man. Did a good deed for all of us
Brandon Morrison hey Brandon did you replace your pump too cause I’m still having the same problem. Still vibrating but the wheel is super loose. When I plug the power steering pump into the power steering assist is when it starts acting up
I am not sure. Our issue went away when replaced the motor and torque sensor
Manual says it needs to be reprogramed and relearned, did you you have to do that?
We did not have to do any of that. Not saying all vehicles will, but we did not have to
@@brandonmorrison1409 Thanks for reply, hopefully it goes as smooth for me as it did you. I get to do this tomorrow outside in the snow.

Did you have to reprogram the car? My steering wheel is acting weird when I turn it on.
I have 2009 malibu Lt 4 cylinder can u tell me if its electric oor hydralic power steering?
By looking
So my wifes malibu steering is moving by it self and losses power steering . like the steering wheel gets hard to move will that be the motor or torque sensor
That is the same issues this car was having, as well as the ESC on the information center. We replaced both the motor and torque sensor on this car and it was corrected
Ok so do you have part numbers for the torque sensor?
No sir, I do not. We went to the pull-a-part and got the entire steering column with the motor and sensor still on it. I think we paid $80 for the entire assembly. That car probably has 50,000 miles on it since we did the repair and still no issues
@@alexlopez7799 the torque sensor part # is 23232310
I’m struggling to reconnect the steering wheel back into the torque sensor How did your get your torque sensor reconnected with steering wheel??
It's been a while, but I think one of the splines is bigger than the others. Look closely at the spline sizes
What was the code that lead you to this repair was it a co550?
I appreciate you fam 💪 great video👍
Hey where did you purchase your parts I’m having trouble finding some
I purchased an entire column from a salvage yard
You can buy a new torque sensor on Amazon for about $120.00. That's probably all you need to replace. I wouldn't use used parts, who knows if they're good. You don't want to do this job twice if you can help it.
Should I replace the motor only or the motor and torque sensor?
Every car can have a different problem. If you plan on keeping the car, and have the funds, I would recommend both. Simply to to keep from having to take it all out if the one you do does not fix the problem.
Will this be similar on a 2018 Chevy Malibu?
I have not done a 2018 yet, I would do a little research before diving into it
Bro i have a kia it's EPS when I turn little bit for the right side only at a certain angle the steering make unusual sound like something is grinding inside and when i complete turning it the sound disappears,

Does that sensor need to be calibrated?
yes
