A wind chill like a soft hiss out of a cracked liquid nitrogen container was coming from the east to my right, layering me head to toe on that side with a thick frost. The soles of my snow boots were impacted with frozen snow, making their heavy-weight, extreme weather treading useless. I brushed a clump of ice crystals from the lens of my goggles with a thickly gloved hand, readjusted the scarf under my coat collar so it fully covered my mouth and nose, and trudged on across the gray landscape being bathed in a soft, pinkish hue from the encroaching sunrise. 'What the hell was I doing out here...?' Eight words that had been rolling around in my head since I had climbed from the wreckage of my Vortex speedster, now kilometers behind me, a broken wreck soon to covered in snow and ice for the rest of the months-long season. I loved that ride. It was the first vehicle I'd ever bought new and paid cash for. One 212 km/h gust into a whiteout later and it's a scrap pile on a hillside in the middle of nowhere. Well, almost the middle of nowhere. Depending on your physical capabilities, it could be considered walking distance to somewhere by most. And that somewhere brought me back to my initial self inquiry: What the hell was I doing out here...? I didn't need the money, but I took the job anyway. I needed a rest more than I needed another job, even if it did pay twice my usual asking. Old man Grubsford played it cagey with his offer, increasing the amount he initially offered without a word from me. That's the risk with dealing with someone often enough that they get to know you, what'll get your attention or what'll set you off. He knew I was comfortable, and the money to him was just a door opener. But it was where the job was at that struck me, and he saved that for after his initial pitch. The one place I hated but could never seem to get away from no matter how far I went. You can put down roots wherever you like, but when you leave a place that's become as much a part of you as a limb, internal organ, or your soul, you take that place with you the rest of your days. Even if it's a place you'd rather never see again. And the job was certainly one that needed doing. Grubsford knew I had to be the one to do it. As the raw glacial air slowed to barely a breeze, the snow flakes that had been dancing like insane dervishes settled into a gentle, downward glidepath to the frozen ground. The clouds to the east parted just enough for the sun's roseate glow to break through. That's when I stopped in my tracks. Like an island on a vast tundra, a cluster of towering cylinders jutted upward, the very tops of some hidden in the passing cloud layer. Each was alive with window lights, made more stark by the insanely cold air. Like a technological carbuncle on the landscape, it looked out of place against the harsh, wintry terrain. I felt a queasiness in my gut I hadn't felt in a long time. I was home, and I didn't want to be. Victims of violence will associate the place where the event occurred almost more so than to those who committed the act against them. I considered myself in that club. But was I a victim or a glutton for punishment? Or maybe this place had inflicted so much on me that I was immune. No... The queasiness was still there, so at least some part of me hadn't fully succumbed to the pain and rot this place had served me with over the years. I continued my trek forward albeit more pensively, feeling the encrusted ice on the soles of my boots creak and crack with each labored step. Not labored due to the frozen terrain or the storm that was passing, but from the heaviness of the place ahead. In a purely unconscious move, I pressed a gloved hand against my chest. Even through the thermal layers of my coat and the compact fibers of my woolen shirt, I believed I could almost feel the scars. Cyberia, towering like an emotionless and unloving parent awaiting the arrival of their disregarded child, silhouetted against the gray sky, welcomed me with a coldness I could feel even through the frigid air all around me. 😁
