Just come to that video after seeing your post on your first darkroom experience. I have owned both a 500CM and a Mamiya 7 (I have also used RB and Z but chose to keep them to the studio for portraits). At the time I used the Mamiya 7 almost like my daily camera (over my M6) because of the quality of the images I was enlarging (and the panoramic option). Now two comments/rectifications to be fair with the camera: 1-it should be compared to the Leica M7 as it offers an "A" mode as the M7 does but that neither the M6 nor the RB7s do. 2-if you use the Mamiya 65 mm at 1 m (the closest focusing distance because of the rangefinder coupling) and then compare what you see with a 35 mm mounted on a Leica M (giving the same filed of view as the 65 mm on a 6x7 camera), at minimum focusing distance (for a film camera without EVF, that is 0.7 m) you will see more in the Leica frame than in the Mamiya frame. In other word the Mamiya 7 allows you "to get closer" than the Leica M for equivalent lenses.
Thanks Bruno! I'm glad you found this one. I wanted to like it. I tried everything.. all the lenses and the pano adapter. The images just looked very flat. I know others love it and I see why for the portability and negative size. Good point vs M7.

My only critique here is that the obvious is not stated: There is NO one single camera that is the best in EVERY situation. I currently use a Mamiya 6 (amazing), a Polaroid I-2 (transformative), a Canon 5D SR (eye popping), and a Toyo 45CF (so satisfying). Not one of them is interchangeable for another. Nor would I want them to be! I acquired each because of their unique qualities, not because they duplicated each other. Figure out what is important to you. What do you want to accomplish? Then work backwards until you find the tool (camera) that will get you there.
Mamiya 7 and 7II have an often-overlooked killer feature up their film chambers: panoramic adapter. When installed, the adapter turns the 6x7 medium formatter into a 35mm panoramic machine, a la Hasselblad XPan or Fuji Tx-1 but one better with super quiet leaf shutters. It would also make the upwardly mobile cost of Mamiya 7/7II more stomachable as you are paying for a medium-format rangefinder and 35mm panoramic machine rolled into one.
The Mamiya 7 with the 80mm lens. Add the 43 mm & 150mm lens. Possibly the finest medium format camera, ever. Especially for landscapes and street photography. The only rival is the Plaubel Makina 67. Leicas are not competition - they are only 35mm.
The Plaubel is a great camera but doesn't compare as a fixed lens camera. The light meter often fails as the cord gets damaged upon closing the camera.
Still enjoyng a Lot ...I dont know yet why It look so funny to me... TKS anyway. One thing : you forgot to tell that the RB_RZ where studio cameras and the M6_7 was street or whathever else camera. Today I Just peek up some equipment from my technitian. He is the leica Guy here in hell(Brazil). Dont forget the other fujis cameras : 6x4.5 , 6x9 , 6x17 , I love them , have them all. They were calked Texas leicas at the time. All the best.

Another superb analysis Matt, thank you! The Mamiya 7 handles much like the M6, allowing one to work fast unlike any other comparable 6x7 camera. One could argue nothing compares. If big prints are needed for exhibition, the Mamiya 7 is my go to camera.
Thanks for this. Been eyeing up the Mamiya 7 for a while but I could never find any decent examples of portrait photography taken with it (which led me to this video). Nice to have a clear-cut answer for what I'm looking for (absolutely seems like the RZ67 or the Hassleblad 500c/m is the way to go.
Nice review, great blog too. Just picked up a Mamiya 7 II to use along side my M6. Nice piece of equipment great negs but personally it changes my shooting style, I shoot less, take less risks and feel more conspicuous on the street. Landscapes are great though but a lot more expensive than my Fuji 6x9. So unless I learn to use it on the street more it might have to go. Get a 645 for all the other types of shots I can’t get with the Leica.

I still would love a comparison on image quality between a folding camera like the Perkeo with a color skopar lens and a bigger 6x6 like Hasselblad. Same for your Rolleicord III against a more expensive 6x6 with a bigger lens. I hope you will have time to do this some day! Thanks!

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of getting a Mamiya 7 someday as a lightweight 6x7 as my RZ67 is really heavy. I use the motor winder with the RZ67 as the hand crank doesn't always move film fully to the next frame. Now I'll just skip the Mamiya 7. Most likely I'll just get a Fuji GFX50R.
Thanks LS, it depends what focal length you shoot I guess. If you can cope with fixed lens to me the GF670 is the best but it can't do wides etc. Yes the RZ is heavy so I bet even more so with the winder!
Don't forget the Koni Omega with the Hexanon lens which was a popular press camera 6x7. That dark slide concept would be a good feature for mirrorless interchangeable lens digital cameras to protect the sensor when changing lenses.
I love teh Mamiya7ii that I have coz I do travel photography and landscape, the weight is a big deal for me. Would love to see how you shoot with the different Mmiya7 lenses. Eagerly waiting for your review also on the gf670 and maybe a makina67? thank you you for your videos.
I don't own a Leica but I do have a Voigtlaender R2, an RZ67 Pro II, a Mamiya 7II (w/ 43mm and 80mm) and the Fuji GF670. And I love them all for different reasons. TLDR; You're right on with your commentary. For the sake of your fans who haven't used the RZ or the GF670 I think you should do thorough reviews on them. My hands-down favorite camera is the RZ for across-the-board versatility, fantastic optics and just how much I enjoy shooting it. Yet, as you pointed out ... it's weight makes traveling light nigh impossible! First time I went to Italy I carried the RZ w/ waist-level finder, 110mm f/2.8, a 120 back, a Minolta Autometer IVF and a super small Gitzo carbon fiber tripod that cost a mint but was light and could fit in my day pack. I don't regret the images I got at all. They're fantastic. Worth the effort. That said ... when I went back to Italy three years later I opted to get a Mamiya 7II kit for all the same reasons you mentioned. Lighter, well suited for travel/landscape, built-in meter. Only drawback was no polarizer (which can be not so great on an ultrawide anyway) or no graduated filters. Also, understanding where the metering patch is in relation to the coincidence patch in the viewfinder is a must for accurate/intentional metering on the 7/7II. I do love the Mamiya 7II for the compactness and the 43mm lens (I love ultrawides). I've gotten some great images from it. But it really is relegated to my "travel" camera when I want to shoot film on a trip. I found fumbling to change lenses (not wanting dust to get on the rear of the lens or inside the mount) was not ideal so a couple years later I picked up the GF670 as a companion to the 7II. Leave the 43mm on the 7II and shoot the built-in 80mm on the GF670. The GF670 became my "walk around" camera for years post that trip. Sure, 10 shots isn't much yet the images were so gorgeous it was hard to not take it with me. The GF670 is the only camera that I've bought new. All the other MF cameras and lenses I got used and when many people were dumping them so I got a great deal on most of it. The Mamiya 7II sells for more used now than what I paid for mine used 13-14 years ago. That's a pleasant surprise. So again, great job! Do make a video on the RZ and the GF670 for those who've never used either as they'll likely enjoy your insights.

..and I guess with regards to your Italy story using the RZ I can relate in my own world. Where Italy has beautiful scenes so countries I visit have the equivalent in terms of models. I was very happy I took my RZ to Budapest. I will share those photos in that video. I should really take it to Poland too! :)
Mirrors make the cameras shake ! So first mirror up and then release the shutter. A focal plane shutter causes more vibration than a leafshutter. Put a Penny on the camera body to show the vibration. ( Forget The Beach Boys; Good Vibrations )
Never used a Mamiya 7, but I have seen its prices going through the roof since two years ago. I personally find it too bulky for walk around. If I really need 6x7, the RZ67 Pro is the better tool IMO and cheaper to get (bought mine 3 years ago for $500 with 110 lens).
Thanks Martin, Yes agreed. I use the Mamiya 6 a lot more for MF on the road stuff (smaller - need to do video!). Agreed RZ67 much better and 110 is excellent - video to come!
Hi Jacky, it depends what you shoot, then it is simple. Portraits? RB/RZ. Landscapes M7, Street? maybe shoot 35mm. If want smaller look at my Mamiya 645 video or the Hasselblad perhaps.
Hi Matt thanks fir this. Watching this reminds me why I always have had the nagging feeling that the Mamiya 7 has never left me feeling satisfied. If only if focused to even the Leica’s 0.7m minimum focus even that very small difference in focus distance for portraits would make such a big difference! Still love that leaf shutter. Not sure I’m ready to go to the relatively heavy reflex mirror shutter though. Like the size, ergonomics and light weight of the 7 though.
thank you for your video , the 35 m vs. medium format they just ca not compare . the size of 35mm is a joke when compared with medium format . and i'm refering to film size , specifications of camera features is ok to compare . Leica has very fast lenses , that a very good feature . i only say that 35 mm film can not be compared with medium or large format films . but thank you for your video .
So little time, so many new videos of yours to watch. And all of them excellent! I vote for a review of the Fuji GF670. And since we are talking about medium format cameras. I'd love to have your opinion on which medium format camera is the most premium/durable/metallic etc. The "Leica M3 of medium format cameras", so to speak.
...and to answer your question.. a MF camera that Leica M3 users would appreciate - Rolleicord/Flex (see video) or Hasselblad 500 series (500cm/501c etc)(see video). Mamiya are often more plastic, and Fuji. Folders cameras are 'weaker' by nature/ design.
Nope! I sold my Mamiya 7.. I got every lens for it determined to like it but finally gave up. The RZ is 100x more fun. Selling the M6 yes but get something else. Yet another great comparison of different types of cameras, thanks Matt! I've used a Mamiya 6 for most of my medium format work for about 12 years or so now and absolutely love it. I've sold it three times to try other systems like Hassy 6x6 or a Rolleiflex but always end up geting another and I won't ever part with my current 6MF now. Lesson firmly learned. Agree totally with all you've said about the 7, useless for portrait work but that's the only big weakness really. The build as you say cannot be compared to Leica but that said it's very robust and the grip is as good as it gets for holding a camera I find. I get some wonderful negs shooting Ilford FP4 with it. The lenses aren't full of character like many Leica mount lenses are but they are superb nonetheless, just a bit neutral that's all.
I had both the Mamiya 7 and the 6 and always went back to Hasselblad for the same reasons Matt cites in his article on MrLeica.com. The Mamiya lenses, while very sharp, just don't have the same 3D magic that the Zeiss lenses have.
Thank you CG! Yes I do rate the Mamiya 6.. that is my Hasselblad for the road setup. I need to do a video for this. Nice grip yes. I find the 6 lenses better than the 7 but maybe it's just because I enjoy the 6x6 crop, I don't know. Hassy or Leica glass is certainly more special though for interesting photos (*less neutral/ plain vanilla).

Hi, Is it worth buying the Mamiya 7 II + 80mm f/4 £3500-£3800? User says it is immaculate. Is it too risky to buy as they are old. User says he bought it new in 2003. Is this camera recommended for portraits and travel? Do these cameras break as they are old and has electronics.
Great review! I also read your article on the Mamiya 7 and also agree with your conclusions there. The Mamiya lenses just don't have the "3D pop" that I also see in the Zeiss Hasselblad / Rollei lenses. If Zeiss made the same lenses for the Mamiya 6 system, I'd get it in a heartbeat.
I had almost the same experience, although I never tried the Mamiya 6 because I had read that the camera was quite fragile. I'd very much like to try the old Pentacon Six with one of the Zeiss Jena lenses that are renowned for their amazing bokeh.
Agreed Weihan! :) I have the Mamiya 6 and prefer it to the 7 but that is for another video! I also have the amazing Rollei SL66E.. Amazing!!! but it never works. :( :( :( Maybe I must share that too!

In 1968 I traded my Fuji 6 x 9 rangefinder plus the three wide, normal and tele optics. I am a fool. In 2000 I bought a secondhand Fuju 4,5 x 6 autofocus. I hate it.
I have a Mamiya 7 and i have to agree with you its not very good for portraits and it is not that light. It is not fair to compare with a 4x5 as this format is quite complicated to deal in a dark room as the enlargers are huge. Mamiya excels in landscape thanks to its wonderful 43mm lense and something you missed a range finder is great if you shot infrared film.
Thanks Joan, good points. Where I should elaborate perhaps in future videos is I like a 4x5 camera using various 120 film backs. The negatives can be 6x7 or larger but all the benefits of 4x5 camera movements. The Mamiya 7 is much faster to operate but you can achieve far more interesting photos with a 4x5 used like this such as close focus like you would with a RZ67.
I use a monopod with my RB67 and the even larger Fuji GX680. It is already very useful to keep the camera stable for focussing, especially with a little longer focal length and wide open. Then it helps with camera shake of course. But I still think it better to use a tripod, if you can‘t keep the exposure time at 1/250, if you don‘t use mirror-up.

Hi Ronald, I need to test and share this year but upfront.. with SL lenses it's out the question completely. Far too big. With M mount lenses it could be interesting to use with vintage glass. (It is like a full frame CL I use).
I really want to use mamiya 7 lenses on modern digital mirrorless there must be a way but can't seem to find anyone interested in making such an electronic aperture adapter
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom need electronically keep leaf shutter open and control the aperture. Some lenses might be dangerously close to the sensor but I don't think mamiya 7 worse than wide angle leica M or contax G lenses.
@@frankluo230 Yes some of the vintage lenses like the pre-war 35mm Biogon f2.8 Contax RF of Jupiter 12 clone both go back a long way into the camera body as examples.
So do you have only one lens? I don’t own the Mamiya or the Fuji but one could easily argue the Mamiya 7 has the best lens system for 6x7 (the Fuji will offer only one focal length), including the best MF wide angle lens that is the 43mm Biogon. I hear that the RZ is more versatile but still street and travel photography will be a total pain. The RZ has excellent lenses above 50mm but I have never found stunning examples for its wide angle lenses. Retrofocus lenses will never perform as well as rangefinder lenses also as they have to deal with the constraints of a mirror.
The overall rendition of lenses with the RB/RZ67 Mamiyas is much more pleasing than images shot with the Mamiya 7 IMHO. I bought into the hype of the Mamiya 7 and bought the camera with 3 lenses, and every single time I got the rolls back from the professional developers I was very disappointed. I continued to compare them to images taken with my Hasselblad 60mm Distagon and the 100mm Planar and there was just no comparison. The Hasselblad lenses produced images that were just magical, whereas the Mamiya 7 images were clinically sharp but completely lacking in that magical something. It's hard to describe what it is that the Zeiss Hasselblad images produce, but whatever it is, the Mamiya 7 does not have it.
Weihan Xingqi yes it makes sense and I don’t think it contradicts my point above. You can get the best optical formula and still something is missing. That’s why I love my Pentax and Hasselblad systems. To all their own... Many people praise the SWC for wide missing that the 43mm Mamiya is a better performer though.
@@toulcaz31 Is that the Pentax 67? I've seen some incredible images made with that camera and its beautiful lenses. Amazing. I made the mistake years ago of not buying one when I had the chance, at something like $300. Now they're easily 5x that price. Live and learn.

Being a sufficiently contented Fuji GF670 user who bought a Mamiya 7 to have the choice of lenses, and then ended up shooting pretty much exclusively with the 80mm anyway, I shall be amused to hear your conclusions, when the time comes.
@@JMaxwell1000 What, the two very different 6x7 cameras with 80mm lenses? The differences are for the most part subtle and insignificant. Fuji GF670 lens has very slight barrel distortion, whereas Mamiya 7 lens seems to have perfect rectilinear correction. Fuji GF670 lens hardly suffers from any flare or internal reflections when shooting into/against light sources, whereas Mamiya 7 lens handles this less well (only slightly). Fuji GF670 focuses down to 0.9m, whereas Mamiya 7 only focuses down to 1.0m; apparently I use that extra 10cm more than I realised for "close-ups". Fuji GF670 opens up to f/3.5, whereas Mamiya 7 only opens up to f/4.0; is that extra 1/3 of a stop important? Fuji GF670 handles image framing and parallax correction more to my liking, whereas Mamiya 7 seems more difficult to guess how much outside each frame edge is captured. Fuji GF670 light meter (however exactly it works) just does the job in 95% of situations, whereas Mamiya 7 light meter is spot only and requires more calculations to use. Fuji GF670 can be tripod-mounted whilst film is changed, whereas Mamiya 7 needs to be taken off. Fuji GF670 folds closed, whereas Mamiya 7 cannot be made any smaller. However... Mamiya 7 is more ergonomic in the hand and nestles nicely in my right eye socket, whereas Fuji GF670 sits less comfortably in both these areas and is therefore less stable for shooting handheld. Mamiya 7 bright patch for rangefinder focusing seems more "definitive", whereas Fuji GF670 bright patch sometimes "feels" sort of "hazy"; I think this depends on the precise position of my eye in relation to the viewfinder. Mamiya 7 has generally smoother bokeh wide open, whereas Fuji GF670 can sometimes look quite rough; but this is subjective, and Fuji GF670 has more aperture blades for rounder bokeh (albeit perhaps still uglier) once you think about stopping down (and in half stops, whereas Mamiya 7 can only do full stops). Mamiya 7 may not be as tough as other cameras but it is at least made out of hard materials all over, whereas Fuji GF670 folding mechanism and bellows might prove a weak point; not that I have experienced any problems with it yet (four years and counting), but the downdraft of a helicopter will probably rip the bellows out (I know a guy who knows a guy that this happened to). Ultimately, for me, dragging a rucksack full of Mamiya 7 lenses through the Alps, and constantly trying to protect the camera from heavy rain, I ended up wishing that I had just taken the Fuji GF670 with me instead... and next time I will. Of course it depends on what you need the camera for, but the ability to travel light and concentrate on just one way of "seeing" ended up being far more important to me than any frankly negligible differences in how the pictures were rendered. Damn, I think I might just have done his review for him.

Good to see you reach the same conclusion as in the video, take the GF670 not the Mamiya 7! :) **It annoys me when the Mamiya 7 gets so much praise. It falls short in so many areas. (But yet the biggest weakness of the GF is the fragility, agreed). ..actually I don't use the 80mm on the 7 as I use the 65mm or 150mm so thanks for sharing those specifics.

Me too Kelvin! I was happy with the GF but then all the hype made me buy the 7.. and I was disappointed (I felt mis-sold ha!). It does of course offer the 6 lenses and I found I now enjoy it more for pano.
Wouldn't it be good if Mr Leica compared like with like for once?? Utter nonsense...35mm street camera compared with travel camera compared with studio camera. When would you ever use an m6 if the job calls for an rb/rz67.
Thanks David, good to hear your thoughts. You hit the nail on the head. The Mamiya 7 isn’t a one came fix all tool. This was to highlight that fact. There is little point doing A vs B for the same task as different tools for different jobs. 👍🏻

The Mamiya 7 with the 80mm lens. Add the 43 mm & 150mm lens. Possibly the finest medium format camera, ever. Especially for landscapes and street photography. The only rival is the Plaubel Makina 67. Leicas are not competition - they are only 35mm.

The Plaubel is a great camera but doesn't compare as a fixed lens camera. The light meter often fails as the cord gets damaged upon closing the camera.

Another superb analysis Matt, thank you! The Mamiya 7 handles much like the M6, allowing one to work fast unlike any other comparable 6x7 camera. One could argue nothing compares. If big prints are needed for exhibition, the Mamiya 7 is my go to camera.

Thanks for this. Been eyeing up the Mamiya 7 for a while but I could never find any decent examples of portrait photography taken with it (which led me to this video). Nice to have a clear-cut answer for what I'm looking for (absolutely seems like the RZ67 or the Hassleblad 500c/m is the way to go.

Nice review, great blog too. Just picked up a Mamiya 7 II to use along side my M6. Nice piece of equipment great negs but personally it changes my shooting style, I shoot less, take less risks and feel more conspicuous on the street. Landscapes are great though but a lot more expensive than my Fuji 6x9. So unless I learn to use it on the street more it might have to go. Get a 645 for all the other types of shots I can’t get with the Leica.

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of getting a Mamiya 7 someday as a lightweight 6x7 as my RZ67 is really heavy. I use the motor winder with the RZ67 as the hand crank doesn't always move film fully to the next frame. Now I'll just skip the Mamiya 7. Most likely I'll just get a Fuji GFX50R.
Thanks LS, it depends what focal length you shoot I guess. If you can cope with fixed lens to me the GF670 is the best but it can't do wides etc. Yes the RZ is heavy so I bet even more so with the winder!
Don't forget the Koni Omega with the Hexanon lens which was a popular press camera 6x7. That dark slide concept would be a good feature for mirrorless interchangeable lens digital cameras to protect the sensor when changing lenses.

I don't own a Leica but I do have a Voigtlaender R2, an RZ67 Pro II, a Mamiya 7II (w/ 43mm and 80mm) and the Fuji GF670. And I love them all for different reasons. TLDR; You're right on with your commentary. For the sake of your fans who haven't used the RZ or the GF670 I think you should do thorough reviews on them.
My hands-down favorite camera is the RZ for across-the-board versatility, fantastic optics and just how much I enjoy shooting it. Yet, as you pointed out ... it's weight makes traveling light nigh impossible! First time I went to Italy I carried the RZ w/ waist-level finder, 110mm f/2.8, a 120 back, a Minolta Autometer IVF and a super small Gitzo carbon fiber tripod that cost a mint but was light and could fit in my day pack. I don't regret the images I got at all. They're fantastic. Worth the effort. That said ... when I went back to Italy three years later I opted to get a Mamiya 7II kit for all the same reasons you mentioned. Lighter, well suited for travel/landscape, built-in meter. Only drawback was no polarizer (which can be not so great on an ultrawide anyway) or no graduated filters. Also, understanding where the metering patch is in relation to the coincidence patch in the viewfinder is a must for accurate/intentional metering on the 7/7II.
I do love the Mamiya 7II for the compactness and the 43mm lens (I love ultrawides). I've gotten some great images from it. But it really is relegated to my "travel" camera when I want to shoot film on a trip. I found fumbling to change lenses (not wanting dust to get on the rear of the lens or inside the mount) was not ideal so a couple years later I picked up the GF670 as a companion to the 7II. Leave the 43mm on the 7II and shoot the built-in 80mm on the GF670.
The GF670 became my "walk around" camera for years post that trip. Sure, 10 shots isn't much yet the images were so gorgeous it was hard to not take it with me.
The GF670 is the only camera that I've bought new. All the other MF cameras and lenses I got used and when many people were dumping them so I got a great deal on most of it.
The Mamiya 7II sells for more used now than what I paid for mine used 13-14 years ago. That's a pleasant surprise.
So again, great job! Do make a video on the RZ and the GF670 for those who've never used either as they'll likely enjoy your insights.

Mirrors make the cameras shake !
So first mirror up and then release the shutter.
A focal plane shutter causes more vibration than a leafshutter.
Put a Penny on the camera body to show the vibration.

Never used a Mamiya 7, but I have seen its prices going through the roof since two years ago. I personally find it too bulky for walk around. If I really need 6x7, the RZ67 Pro is the better tool IMO and cheaper to get (bought mine 3 years ago for $500 with 110 lens).
And the images made with the RB67 IMHO look much better than those made with the Mamiya 7.

You can crop the Mamiya film to get the model to appear as close as you want. Try that with 35mm.

Hi Matt thanks fir this. Watching this reminds me why I always have had the nagging feeling that the Mamiya 7 has never left me feeling satisfied. If only if focused to even the Leica’s 0.7m minimum focus even that very small difference in focus distance for portraits would make such a big difference! Still love that leaf shutter. Not sure I’m ready to go to the relatively heavy reflex mirror shutter though. Like the size, ergonomics and light weight of the 7 though.

...and to answer your question.. a MF camera that Leica M3 users would appreciate - Rolleicord/Flex (see video) or Hasselblad 500 series (500cm/501c etc)(see video). Mamiya are often more plastic, and Fuji. Folders cameras are 'weaker' by nature/ design.

Yet another great comparison of different types of cameras, thanks Matt! I've used a Mamiya 6 for most of my medium format work for about 12 years or so now and absolutely love it. I've sold it three times to try other systems like Hassy 6x6 or a Rolleiflex but always end up geting another and I won't ever part with my current 6MF now. Lesson firmly learned. Agree totally with all you've said about the 7, useless for portrait work but that's the only big weakness really. The build as you say cannot be compared to Leica but that said it's very robust and the grip is as good as it gets for holding a camera I find. I get some wonderful negs shooting Ilford FP4 with it. The lenses aren't full of character like many Leica mount lenses are but they are superb nonetheless, just a bit neutral that's all.
I had both the Mamiya 7 and the 6 and always went back to Hasselblad for the same reasons Matt cites in his article on MrLeica.com. The Mamiya lenses, while very sharp, just don't have the same 3D magic that the Zeiss lenses have.

I find the 6 lenses better than the 7 but maybe it's just because I enjoy the 6x6 crop, I don't know. Hassy or Leica glass is certainly more special though for interesting photos (*less neutral/ plain vanilla).

Hi, Is it worth buying the Mamiya 7 II + 80mm f/4 £3500-£3800? User says it is immaculate. Is it too risky to buy as they are old. User says he bought it new in 2003. Is this camera recommended for portraits and travel? Do these cameras break as they are old and has electronics.
For me not worth it (I eventually sold mine for much less than this). Yes they can still break. You could get 3 Hasselblad for that!

Great review! I also read your article on the Mamiya 7 and also agree with your conclusions there. The Mamiya lenses just don't have the "3D pop" that I also see in the Zeiss Hasselblad / Rollei lenses. If Zeiss made the same lenses for the Mamiya 6 system, I'd get it in a heartbeat.
I had almost the same experience, although I never tried the Mamiya 6 because I had read that the camera was quite fragile. I'd very much like to try the old Pentacon Six with one of the Zeiss Jena lenses that are renowned for their amazing bokeh.

I have a Mamiya 7 and i have to agree with you its not very good for portraits and it is not that light. It is not fair to compare with a 4x5 as this format is quite complicated to deal in a dark room as the enlargers are huge. Mamiya excels in landscape thanks to its wonderful 43mm lense and something you missed a range finder is great if you shot infrared film.
Thanks Joan, good points. Where I should elaborate perhaps in future videos is I like a 4x5 camera using various 120 film backs. The negatives can be 6x7 or larger but all the benefits of 4x5 camera movements. The Mamiya 7 is much faster to operate but you can achieve far more interesting photos with a 4x5 used like this such as close focus like you would with a RZ67.

I use a monopod with my RB67 and the even larger Fuji GX680. It is already very useful to keep the camera stable for focussing, especially with a little longer focal length and wide open. Then it helps with camera shake of course. But I still think it better to use a tripod, if you can‘t keep the exposure time at 1/250, if you don‘t use mirror-up.

@@frankluo230 Yes some of the vintage lenses like the pre-war 35mm Biogon f2.8 Contax RF of Jupiter 12 clone both go back a long way into the camera body as examples.
So do you have only one lens? I don’t own the Mamiya or the Fuji but one could easily argue the Mamiya 7 has the best lens system for 6x7 (the Fuji will offer only one focal length), including the best MF wide angle lens that is the 43mm Biogon. I hear that the RZ is more versatile but still street and travel photography will be a total pain. The RZ has excellent lenses above 50mm but I have never found stunning examples for its wide angle lenses. Retrofocus lenses will never perform as well as rangefinder lenses also as they have to deal with the constraints of a mirror.
The overall rendition of lenses with the RB/RZ67 Mamiyas is much more pleasing than images shot with the Mamiya 7 IMHO. I bought into the hype of the Mamiya 7 and bought the camera with 3 lenses, and every single time I got the rolls back from the professional developers I was very disappointed. I continued to compare them to images taken with my Hasselblad 60mm Distagon and the 100mm Planar and there was just no comparison. The Hasselblad lenses produced images that were just magical, whereas the Mamiya 7 images were clinically sharp but completely lacking in that magical something. It's hard to describe what it is that the Zeiss Hasselblad images produce, but whatever it is, the Mamiya 7 does not have it.
Weihan Xingqi yes it makes sense and I don’t think it contradicts my point above. You can get the best optical formula and still something is missing. That’s why I love my Pentax and Hasselblad systems. To all their own... Many people praise the SWC for wide missing that the 43mm Mamiya is a better performer though.
@@toulcaz31 Is that the Pentax 67? I've seen some incredible images made with that camera and its beautiful lenses. Amazing. I made the mistake years ago of not buying one when I had the chance, at something like $300. Now they're easily 5x that price. Live and learn.

Being a sufficiently contented Fuji GF670 user who bought a Mamiya 7 to have the choice of lenses, and then ended up shooting pretty much exclusively with the 80mm anyway, I shall be amused to hear your conclusions, when the time comes.
What did you think of the images produced by these two very different cameras?
@@JMaxwell1000 What, the two very different 6x7 cameras with 80mm lenses? The differences are for the most part subtle and insignificant.
Fuji GF670 lens has very slight barrel distortion, whereas Mamiya 7 lens seems to have perfect rectilinear correction.
Fuji GF670 lens hardly suffers from any flare or internal reflections when shooting into/against light sources, whereas Mamiya 7 lens handles this less well (only slightly).
Fuji GF670 focuses down to 0.9m, whereas Mamiya 7 only focuses down to 1.0m; apparently I use that extra 10cm more than I realised for "close-ups".
Fuji GF670 opens up to f/3.5, whereas Mamiya 7 only opens up to f/4.0; is that extra 1/3 of a stop important?
Fuji GF670 handles image framing and parallax correction more to my liking, whereas Mamiya 7 seems more difficult to guess how much outside each frame edge is captured.
Fuji GF670 light meter (however exactly it works) just does the job in 95% of situations, whereas Mamiya 7 light meter is spot only and requires more calculations to use.
Fuji GF670 can be tripod-mounted whilst film is changed, whereas Mamiya 7 needs to be taken off.
Fuji GF670 folds closed, whereas Mamiya 7 cannot be made any smaller.
However...
Mamiya 7 is more ergonomic in the hand and nestles nicely in my right eye socket, whereas Fuji GF670 sits less comfortably in both these areas and is therefore less stable for shooting handheld.
Mamiya 7 bright patch for rangefinder focusing seems more "definitive", whereas Fuji GF670 bright patch sometimes "feels" sort of "hazy"; I think this depends on the precise position of my eye in relation to the viewfinder.
Mamiya 7 has generally smoother bokeh wide open, whereas Fuji GF670 can sometimes look quite rough; but this is subjective, and Fuji GF670 has more aperture blades for rounder bokeh (albeit perhaps still uglier) once you think about stopping down (and in half stops, whereas Mamiya 7 can only do full stops).
Mamiya 7 may not be as tough as other cameras but it is at least made out of hard materials all over, whereas Fuji GF670 folding mechanism and bellows might prove a weak point; not that I have experienced any problems with it yet (four years and counting), but the downdraft of a helicopter will probably rip the bellows out (I know a guy who knows a guy that this happened to).
Ultimately, for me, dragging a rucksack full of Mamiya 7 lenses through the Alps, and constantly trying to protect the camera from heavy rain, I ended up wishing that I had just taken the Fuji GF670 with me instead... and next time I will. Of course it depends on what you need the camera for, but the ability to travel light and concentrate on just one way of "seeing" ended up being far more important to me than any frankly negligible differences in how the pictures were rendered.

Good to see you reach the same conclusion as in the video, take the GF670 not the Mamiya 7! :) **It annoys me when the Mamiya 7 gets so much praise. It falls short in so many areas. (But yet the biggest weakness of the GF is the fragility, agreed).
..actually I don't use the 80mm on the 7 as I use the 65mm or 150mm so thanks for sharing those specifics.

Me too Kelvin! I was happy with the GF but then all the hype made me buy the 7.. and I was disappointed (I felt mis-sold ha!). It does of course offer the 6 lenses and I found I now enjoy it more for pano.

Utter nonsense...35mm street camera compared with travel camera compared with studio camera. When would you ever use an m6 if the job calls for an rb/rz67.
Thanks David, good to hear your thoughts. You hit the nail on the head. The Mamiya 7 isn’t a one came fix all tool. This was to highlight that fact. There is little point doing A vs B for the same task as different tools for different jobs. 👍🏻
