Fill your black tank as full as you can before flushing. The bigger the “whoosh“, the better.
And repeat a couple times
I never do that and have never had any problems. I make sure that I put a few gallons of water in our tank and unique down our toilet. As we flush we make sure we use plenty of water to flush. Then when it comes time to empty the gray tank (with plenty of water in it) I pull the lever and then immediately turn on my flush hose. Then I set a time for 10 minutes and at the end of that ten minutes I have clear water with nothing coming out. Meanwhile I now have my fresh water stuff all put away.
I've got a 40 gallon black tank, after every dump I put about 10 gallons of water back into the tank and always use plenty of water when going #2.
Since I started doing it this way I've not had any problems getting the tank clean.
PS
I live full time.
I'm new to RV and find this whole subject rather amusing. Because as a kid we would go every weekend in the camper, pooping and peeing and never a care. When the tank got full dad would dump it. Watched him do it many times, did it myself too when I was bigger. Of course then this was all boondocking. Never once hooked up in a RV park. If even there was such a thing back then! So the tank just eventually filled up, and got emptied. I think that's the nub of it. People today mostly RV park, where they hook up and so then instead of the tank filling up, being diluted with sink water, sloshing around as you drive, for days and days AND THEN being dumped, instead the RV sits stationary and hooked up to the park the liquid drains away without ever giving the solids time to slosh around into a slurry. Or they go on one short trip, it'll be weeks or months until the next one, so wind up trying to empty a tank only 10% full of mostly solids that had insufficient time to slosh around. No wonder some of the bigger chunks get left behind. And so now having spent all this time watching this video and writing this comment the conclusion is: don't over think it!
I've been using calgon and Pinesol for years. Not one issue and sensors have always worked. Be sure and use plenty of water when flushing!!
Water is what I have found to be the key for me. Lots of water when flushing the bowl, and lots of water when flushing the tank.
Lol. Wrong.
@susanmarr6094 "LOL, wrong"? What's wrong? Can you elaborate at all?
The Calgon creates a slippery action to help eliminate the waste better and the Pinesol creates a more pleasant smell.
Yes, I have done both and also had our tanks professionally cleaned after. Our tanks were much easier and came clean more quickly using the pinesol/calgon method and had less smell than when using a digestive product. We also purchased an RV in the past with a “pyramid”. The only way we finally got it and the sensors clean was with the “Geo Method” We have been RVing since the 80’s, we have tried it all. But as I always say, you do you.
I use the Pinesol and Calgon method with no problems. I haven't had any problem with my sensors yet. I always start my camping with 5 gallons of water in the black tank with 8oz of the Kleen tank mix.
Thanks Todd - always a pleasure to watch your Tech Tuesdays. You provide your knowledge to assist RVers. It's up to them to make the choice. Great job - Be safe 😎
Great description of a solid tank and the proper way to help it. I have been a camper since 1970 and when we depart an area we will put in ice cubes to scrape the tank bottom and sides to clean and allow the sensors to work properly while driving.
Unique here for the last 10 years with no problems
Unique has worked the best for me ever since you had a comparison video a couple of years ago using dog food.
I’m on their mailing list so I get a regular delivery set to my needs and never run out. Thanks Todd!
I have been using Unique. Saw your video showing Liquified dissolving just a bit better than unique. Tried the Liquified but since Unique controls the odor better. I switched back to Unique. Does an excellent job all around.
I sometimes put 5-6 gallons of hot water from the shower in the crapper before flushing and draining. 😊
Thank you for calling out those people! Great tips, thank you!
We dump a lot of our dish water into the black tank to add fluids to the "mix". I use no additives or anything and has been working fine for years.
I always fill my black tank up with dihydrogen monoxide to keep it clean.
You're going to have people wondering where they can get this...😂😅😊😊
@@curtwalp5120 You can buy it at most RV parks, just ask!
We have a unit on a permanent site in Delaware, my wife lives in it all summer and I drive back and forth on the weekends. We usually dump our tanks every 2 weeks, was using another brand tank treatment, switched to unique no more smell, no sewer flies and my tanks dump perfectly. Thanks for the videos
Kind off Topic: Can we add degreaser in the gray tank to help with the sensor malfunction?
Hello Todd,
Thank you yet another great video! Question, for cleaning gray tanks only, can you use vinegar for soap scum ect??
1:28a guy that went to poo university (P.U.) is telling me to look up a word😅😅 just kidding, thanks for the videos.
How did I not come up with P.U.! Genius!!!!
@@NationalRVTrainingAcademy 😂
Thanks Todd for your great videos.
I know that you have covered this subject several times about tank cleaning products.
I was just wondering why you have never brought up a product called "Just Science TankTechRX Probiotic RV Tank Treatment"?
Thanks,
Keep up the good work
We bring a hose in once a month with a nozzle and blast any possible poop pyramid build up. We have a small camper with only a 30 gallon tank. I just open the valve a spray it out really good.
I have been using the 'tank kleener' formula for over 18 months and couldn't be happier. No pyramids or clogs and 'things' exit quite effectively. I dump as needed and flush the black tank every other dump and have no problems. I have used the enzyme treatment in the past and find it no significant difference other than the price. And as for the statement that the cleaners have a vested interest in cleaning tanks, so does Matt's Rv Reviews, Unique, etc. have interest in using enzymes. Use what works for your system.
I saw a video of a cleaner saying don't put anything in and I thought he's just drumming up business for his new franchises. Thanks for keeping it real. 🙂
I tell people to add extra water when you are done for the next person. Key is to use a sufficient amount of water, too.
Then there is the, it's usually not in there long enough to have any substantial break down
Pure Power Blue. The gallon size is $21
Read what you wrote again. It's $21 a gallon! There are cheaper solutions that work just as well.
@@ThomasLips 64 treatments for $21 seems like a good deal to me.
I've been using Unique Digest-It since I purchased my 5th wheel and after year two the sensor on the black tank always reads "full." Nothing I've tried rectifies that. It's been suggested that Unique and Liquified create a sludge that coats the sensors then dries on them. Thoughts?
Todd, you were F*&^ing meant for this. Thanks. B
Very informative enzymes instead of killing bacteria
My thought question is. The black tank wand sprayer cleaner. Is there an adapter to attach it to the shower hose or something besides 100ft garden hose and finder the water source. Just thought there’s gotta be away to connect this thing to the shower or sink somehow.
Thanks, great info.
2:14 A pet peeve of mine is assuming "chemicals" are always negative. Water is a chemical, H2O, but, yes Todd, I know what you meant. 😁
I would love to have a Poo degree.
Just today you also have a crap degree? 😂 I laughed when he said that😂😂
Navy method. Don't put anything down the head (toilet) unless you have eaten it first. And NEVER put bleach in your porta-potty.
Buy the little 1/4 oz yeast packets. Just as effectively as the RV specific treatments like Liquified”, they take up less space and they’re way cheaper!
Enzymes and all of that don’t break the solids down quickly enough to work effectively. Water, water, water.
Clear and concise. Thank you.
A squirt of detergent can breakdown the waste. Breakdown, as in digesting waste such as in a septic tank is not happening with any value in the amount of time waste is in a black tank
Speaking of placket tanks I have a question. I work for a company that manages the camp grounds for the Forrest service. My question is how much suction pressure can a black tank take before they collapses?
Personally, I would only use Liquified.
If an enzyme breaks down poop to be the consistency of peanut butter and oatmeal will a simple water flush remove it all? Or would it just build up in the corners and in my sensors?
Great Video - as always. Helped me to break down the issues :)
I think this is more mechanical than chemical, or biological for that matter. I think the solids are softened at best before they are removed.
You missed a very important point on newer RV’s. I have a macerator on both my toilet and discharge hose. I only use Calgon dish washer soap. Keeps everything clean as far as I can tell.
Thanks for sharing
After you winterize the rv do you recomend adding a few more gallons of antifreeze to the black tank ?
We use a bidet and tank tech or unique
How does having mascerating toilets change your perspective?
Does anyone leave poop in the black tank long enough for an enzyme to break it down?
👍👍👍👍👍
If you're having problems with solids couldn't you use Exlax? Inquiring minds want to know!
Hot sauce=Texas exlax.

Video won't play. I don't see a future time when it will play.
6pm cst.
Somehow my comment got the deleted. My bad, I didn't understand that it was 64 treatments. I thought it was one treatment $21😂
What about happy camper tank treatment? Is that enzyme or bacteria based?
Kleen tank. Pinesol and calgon you are saying it not good?
Crates a PH that kills bacteria that breaks down solids.
Is your beard real?
Yes
Poo degree = 69 years of daily study. I don’t need no “stinkin” poo degree! See what I did there? If you did see please shut the bathroom door!
Sorry you are off base on this one. Like all your videos. First one that I have to disagree with you on. Pinesol and calgon for the past three years works best and sensors are working better than any other times in my very long history of RVing. Not interested in liquify or any other chemicals. Yes I said chemicals. Sorry very disappointed in this video from a fellow Texan.
Man, that is just crappy advice 💩
