Saw George in concert at college in the mid-70s, what a night - brilliant performer! His books are hilarious - thought I was going to die laughing at his escapades in the Royal Navy.
I was so very fortunate to meet George at the Charter Theatre, Guild Hall, Preston (sadly now closed) way back when I was about 18, around 1980-81. She was such a gentleman & I was so pleased to have met him & spent time chatting with him. Lovely memories. Bless you, George x
Alan George Heywood Melly (17 August 1926 - 5 July 2007). He died at his London home of lung cancer and emphysema (which he had for the last two years of his life) aged 80 on 5 July 2007. His Humanist funeral was held at the West London Crematorium, in Kensal Green. The hearse was led by a jazz band, including Kenny Ball on trumpet, playing a New Orleans funeral march. His cardboard coffin was covered with old snapshots and cartoons of Melly by his friends, as well as hand-drawn decorations.
I met him wandering around Covent Garden one day, I remember it was summer and an exceptionally hot day in 1989 and he had a yellow plaid suit on. Such a lovely man.

I met George Melly twice as we had a mutual friend. George was a really lovely guy. Kind and really sweet.

That's what happens when you leave your tape running after what was originally recorded. Stuff like this goes on RUclips.
Such a shame that this broadcast was not complete!!
Yeah, hopefully it will be found soon, this was one of those end-of-tape finds.
The Stranglers brought me here.
I watched him play at Coventry theatre when I was a student. He was brilliant but drunk and fell of the stage!!
All I see is a man performing a third rate Louis Armstrong imitation.
