Shin Godzilla has such a terrifying design really makes you wonder what he would turn into in a sequel

The concept art showed the further evolution of Shin Godzilla which includes wings as well as an omnipotent god like form.

I had just rewatched this movie on my birthday last month and shown it to my sister for the first time and we both really enjoyed it. Godzilla is truly a beautiful and disturbing movie, even with the occasionally ropey effects everything else from the monster design, acting, cinematography, sound design, and especially score are fantastic. As someone who love’s history, nature, paleontology, and fantasy Godzilla is my third favorite movie after Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, and Princess Mononoke, with Godzilla being my favorite monster and at least one of, if not my favorite fictional characters. It also helped get me into film as an art form so there’s a lot of nostalgia with it.

Despite everything else that 'Godzilla- Minus One' has going for it (including the modern Fx's), the original film is STILL the GREATEST GODZILLA MOVIE EVER. The ENDINGS are the main reason. In 'Minus One' it is made clear that Godzilla has only been stopped for the time being (as a part of him is shown regenerating), where in the original film he is unquestionably killed. In addition, the sacrifice made by Dr. Sarazowa is epic. Then I feel that EVERY Godzilla movie since the first owes too much to it... The monsters design... His epic roar... The music that is still used in damn near every other film... 'Gojira' (1954) still reigns supreme, but 'Minus One' is unquestionably the second best!

I'm ashamed to say as a Kaiju fan that I hadn't watched _Gojira_ until very recently. My best friend told me he had a rare DVD set that had a lot of BTS and reference media which was awesome. I was a junior in high school and watched it Wednesday, October 13, 2021, two days before going to my first music festival too. Despite his parents not understanding what we were watching and wanting us to get out of there lol, he stayed firm and we watched until the very end. It was beautiful, like watching a piece of cinema history. The way you describe Godzilla, in the beginning, is so true to what I was feeling, he is a force of nature. I now own that DVD set because my best friend gifted it to me because I gave him the first eight deluxe volumes of Berserk that Haloween.

Seeing the first movie in this franchise was something of a milestone in my life as a G-Fan watching all the ones before it as it was me seeing the origins of the monster I grew up loving as if he were an old friend. And as my friends & family now know I could-and most likely would- talk about this franchise for days. And I have no desire to stop.

Glad you shouted out Beast From 20,000 Fathoms; a lot of Godzilla fans haven't checked it out, but it's an important inspiration just like King Kong was! I also appreciate how you point out that this was the first monster movie with this level of destruction; Kong and the Rhedosaurus were both far smaller and less powerful than Godzilla was, so it was really the first instance of a true 'city destroying' monster. Fitting, since he's meant to represent nuclear destruction. Fantastic review, hope it does well so you make more!

    • @RealLifeRyan

Indeed! The Tokyo destruction scene would have been a big deal back then. Now it’s just taken for granted in Kaiju films haha

It's fascinating that theres many ideas of how Godzilla and Godzilla movies can be. You got Godzilla being a villain, Godzilla being a hero, Then most of the movies are all about fantasy, Ancient tales and popularly Monster battles while some of the films cover the problems with war, Nukes, the incompetence of Humanity and other subject it's dedicated to talk about.

  • @TehZergRush

I'm a huge Godzilla fan, super stoked for this review.
There's actually 4 eras now. Shin Godzilla, the Netflix anime trilogy, and Minus One are part of what's called the "Reiwa" era.
In regards to Ishiro Honda being a veteran and bringing his knowledge of the horrors of war to screen, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Honda was stationed and oversaw a "comfort woman" station. Which is to say he oversaw and accommodated the SA of many women. I know he wrote an essay about his experience in a Japanese magazine in the 60's, but I've yet to find it, let alone a translated version of it. I'd be curious to see it's contents.
The introduction of the oxygen destroyer is a reasonable fear in what comes after nuclear weapons and in a way was ahead of it's time in realizing the potential of mutually assured destruction. This theme was hilariously pooped on in 2019's KOTM.
While the film did pioneer suitmation, it was initially a concession. Originally they wanted to have Godzilla done in stop-motion, a la King Kong and Beast from 20k, but they didn't have the talent/budget and went with suitmation as an alternative which unintentionally spawned an entire sub-genre.
Great video Ryan, thanks for all your hard work.

Alamo did screenings of the 4K restoration in November of 2021 for the film's 67th anniversary (plus a handful of others like Hedorah, Return, Biollante, and Shin of which I was able to catch all except Hedorah). It was a joy to watch the film with my father, surrounded by fans both young and old, and overhear all the reverence everyone gave the film as the credits rolled.
Also, if you have the Blu-ray, I highly recommend listening to David Kalat's commentary. He made one for both versions of the movie so you get around three hours of behind the scenes information if you listen to them.

The first Godzilla movie I ever saw was Godzilla vs Megalon. My uncle bought me a vhs for my birthday when I was like 4 or 5. I was also a fan of dinosaurs at this age so naturally I loved it. I've watched every Godzilla movie to come out. As a kid I loved the action and the monster fights. As an adult it's pure nostalgia. I understand the stories better for sure and can appreciate the darker tones. But I also enjoy everything else about it. To this day nothing makes me happier than to sit down and watch some Godzilla.

There’s smth I feel everyone should really appreciate about Gojira. It isn’t just your normal monster movie like your Dracula or Frankenstein. Sure he’s a giant monsterous lizard, but also a literal metaphor of the atomic bomb and radiation. This, at least imo, makes Gojira probably the most terrifying monster in history, as it really makes you imagine the tragedy and devastation Japan faced back in the 1940s-50s but in the form of a titanic reptilian beast, way scarier than any medieval dragon….

so growing up, my parents were the same way, but my father ultimately got me into Godzilla. when i watched this film, it was the 1956 american made film. it was on VHS, and i probably watched it at least 100 times? now i had never seen the original after seeing that film, because to me, that was the film that i thought started it all, and boy was i wrong!
i watched that original film in high school, specifically in my study hall class. i was bored and had nothing to do, so i watched the 1954 film. i remember scaring some class mates when Godzilla attacked the train after i gasped a bit.

My first exposure of the big G was Godzilla 1985. One of my classmates in 1st grade was into it, and told me to check it out. The only one tgat was at my video store was 1985. Starting with the "Godzilla vs Bambi" cartoon, I was hooked immediately. I have distinct memories of watching him follow the seagulls after he sucked the nuclear power plant dry. Then came TNT Monatervision, and oh man did I eat that shit up! One Christmas I got the NES game, and the 12 inch rubber Imperial Godzilla, and watched the movies with him next to me. I watched the 56 movie as a kid, and didn't think much of it. I was grumpy it was in black and white, no monster fights and there was too much talking and not enough Godzilla. As an adult, my feelings towards Gojira 1954 is identical to the letter of what you described in this video. A work of art indeed. With all of the content that's coming out, its the best time ever to be a Godzilla fan. Long live the king!

I do like this movie, although Shin Godzilla will always be my favorite. The original reminds me of in some ways of the first Rambo movie First Blood in the sense that i went in expecting something else and being surprised by the end. Gojira ends not with huge battle but a murder suicide to destroy all knowledge of the next big doomsday weapon. First Blood is very similar in how different it is to its sequels. If you haven't seen it and know nothing about it go see it, stop reading. I saw Rambo 3 first and assumed the first would be similar, gun porn with a heavy body count. Not only does Rambo only kill one person in First blood (it was an accident) it ends with him having an emotional ptsd breakdown crying on the ground.

Gojira is a pure masterpiece of film making and one of the most important pieces of art in modern times.
It's an anti-war film. Emanating from the deep pain and horror of post ww2, it of course is a stark warning regarding nuclear weaponry, but it goes beyond that and the monster can be seen as a representation of the human races tendency towards self destruction with warfare. A monster that rises again and again from deep in our psych just as godzilla rises from the ocean depths.
This message has been obscured over the years as the memories of ww2 have faded and have been replaced with a more romantic and surface Hollywood version. Emphasis has been placed on the nuclear aspect but it obscures the stark representation of the fire bombing of Japanese cities. The scenes of the destruction of Tokyo are starkly the experience of conventional fire bombing and not a nuclear detonation. Even down to the sound effect of the monsters foot steps echoing the sounds of an approaching bombing run.
Serazowa's character directly places the blame for the horror of war on all of us as a single race, not one of us can be trusted. His confrontation with the monster at the end is our confrontation with the monster deep within ourselves and the final message of "this horror is coming again" is chilling. Particularly as we watch with detachment the news of today.
I just flat out love this f'n movie

This movie is what is known as a metaphor, for if humanity keeps testing the nuclear devices that created gojira another one might come up from the depths and terror on Tokyo, leaving it again land of burning buildings, rubble, burning corpses that mirrors, the destruction of the atomic bombs that laid waste to Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and the movie put it Godzilla is not a good guy or a bad guy. It has no personality. It’s a deity a God that has came to waste to Tokyo for our sins of the atomic bomb. He can only make peace with the demons and the demons. Want to make peace with us if we do not another, Godzilla could rise up from the depth.

They forget or take into account that life & nature find a way to go on. Minus one Godzilla is not ridiculously big, the radioactive death breath is absurd & the fast regeneration process is questionable but I believe that if the conditions were right ( cuz radioactive mutation IS possible) Godzilla could possibly exist.
