EATING AT EVERY NYU DINING HALL

  • Yes, that's right. I finally visited all dining halls at NYU. And it took me a year to make this video. I'm surprised I even finished it, honestly. You can take this as a Valentine's Day special LOL... jk
    IMPORTANT NOTES:
    0. This video is based on the Spring 2022 semester. Given how frequently NYU's dining-related things seem to change, the information in this video is bound to change. I guess the differences will be fun to note in the future.
    1. With the exception of Third North, Cluckstein, 18 Below, and UHall Commons Café, this was shot back in spring of freshman year. You can tell by the different rooms I'm in. If you see the door, it was recorded in freshman year. If you can see the window, it was recorded in sophomore year.
    2. I decided to include footage from freshman year because I already recorded so much of it that it didn't seem realistic to visit all of them again in sophomore year. Plus, I was planning on releasing this video in freshman year anyway, but the reason why I pushed it to sophomore year was that I wanted to wait until the closed locations opened back up again.
    3. When I said Downstein had the longest operating times and that Palladium was the furthest dorm, I meant within the Manhattan campus. Including Brooklyn, then obviously Jasper Kane is the furthest and also operates the longest (see bottom).
    4. Meal swipes and dining dollars are included in NYU's Meal Plans. Meal swipes are essentially the number of meals you can get from these dining halls and other locations. (ex. 225/semester). Dining dollars are additional money you can spend at dining halls and other eating locations. (ex. $200/semester).
    5. There was apparently a dining hall at Rubin Hall, a freshman dorm. This dining hall closed in 2013. I didn't include this in the video because it seemed irrelevant (and there was nowhere to put this info). Here's an article you can check out: nyulocal.com/nyu-is-closing-r...
    6. If you're wondering what my ranking of these dining halls are, it's too hard to rank them one by one. But I'd put 18 Below on top, then the rest of Retail Dining + Jasper Kane, and then Residential Dining (obviously). I can't consider NYU Dentistry because all I had was a pre-packaged sandwich and juice.

As a NYU student, how do you get access to the dining halls?
I read on the school page that you have to pay with NYU dollars, but I didn’t completely understand. Do you have to pay every time you go to get food?

    • @OllehRebelz
      @OllehRebelz  2 года назад +33

NYU students buy meal plans at the beginning of the semester, which is added to their account. Every time you visit a dining hall, you have to tap your ID card at a sensor, which will automatically deduct the amount of meal swipes/dining dollars you use. For Residential Dining, you usually tap before entering (because it's one meal swipe for anything), but for Retail Dining, you usually tap after getting your food (because the dining hall workers look at how much food you got and then calculate how many swipes/dollars you used).

Yo, I’m Jewish and I eat kosher, it’s not only meat actually, it has meat days and milk days, they only have one each day because when it comes to kosher you can’t mix meat and milk.
I’m happy you enjoyed, kosher food doesn’t get hyped up enough. It’s so underrated and the staff are the sweetest people. I tell all my non Jewish friends to go there all the time.

Yup Kosher food is indeed underrated, just like Halal food, I'm a Muslim myself and really respect and appreciate the similarities and differences between Halal and Kosher food let alone the similarities between our forbidden things we aren't able to do and the allowed things we are allowed to do, wish you a great day/night!

Hi, my daughter has been assigned to UHall as freshman, which dining hall to go for breakfast? Since there's going to be a kitchen in the apartment, she plans to opt in for 1 meal plan , is this available to freshman? Or would you suggest breakfast + dinner plan? Can she just opt in for fall, and see how it goes? thanks

Okay hi all! I moved in and I'm gonna give my honest review of the food so far. For reference I personally don't trust others reviews of food unless they're videos or very detailed because food reviews fall into a statistical bias: think about it. Few ppl are gonna leave a 3 stars at a restaurant. They'll only comment if it's SUPER GOOD or if it's SUPER AWFUL. I've noticed similar tendency in anecdotes about school food. And fwiw I went to a private high school and ate really well every single day and the majority of students, regardless of socioeconomic status STILL found a way to complain about food.
Upstein: wasn't open during welcome week. Will update
Kimmel: Omg so yummy. The workers are so charming and kind. I went to the burger station. Tbh a benefit of retail dining is the fact that your meals r portioned which helps with eating in moderation + sticking to health goals. I couldn't catch his name but the worker who made my food literally made my day even as I was ditched by my friend that wanted to go to the speed dating style meet-up. Also the food is really good. There was a disappointing protein coffee that had not enough cream and was sad and bitter. Whoever says Kimmel sushi is bad is like lying... it's good? I got the avocado cucumber roll since I'm pescatarian/vegetarian and that was super yummy but the soy sauce was hard to open I had to rip it with my teeth (most sauce packets r like this so like. That's life in general lmao) and there is a soda fountain but also free water. Personally enjoyed Kimmel
Kosher eatery: so it's actually really good. I personally have a lot of experience with traditional/chasidic Jewish culture but really as long as you're respectful the staff is super nice and the people eating there don't mind you at all. Just don't be a weird person lol. They have a dairy side and then a parve/vegan side. The food is made in smaller batches but it's simple and good. Seasoned well and yummy. It's quieter than the other -steins so that's a plus. The staff are super kind as well.
Downstein: okay everyone's like i"djakfbwnf downstein is sooooo bad" but like the food isn't even bad. I'm so serious. It's just that the food is pretty consistent especially breakfast foods, they have the same lineup of foods for breakfast (and they have SO MUCH food for breakfast. You can have a different meal set every day if the week and cycle through each week if you just put more thought into what goes on your plate imho) i personally don't mind monotony in my diet but incorporate veggies. There's omelet station and they make fresh pancakes too. The guy who runs omelet station is so nice. Makes my mornings Love that man. Are you sending a pattern yet lol. Usually I have potatoes, veggie sausage patty and omelet with coffee for breakfast. The breakfast pizza was unique and like a garlic bread. It wasn't bad, just carb heavy for my liking. Food is seasoned well. The coffee from nestle machine comes pre sweetened or at least the French vanilla does. I haven't tried any other settings yet lol. My review is lacking in depth, I am now noticing.
Lipton hall: I went here during lunch and the line was out the door. I waited 30 minutes in food line just to get food and it was atrocious. The wait time. I had veggie 4 bean chili with queso on top, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and some fudge cake dessert with a hot tea because my voice was hoarse from over practice (I'm a music major and opera singer) it was yummy but iirc the spinach needed a little salt take this with a grain of salt because my home food is consistently very salty and my family eats salty food so I may be conditioned lolol. Anyways I got a baked potato afterward bc I love baked potato with cheddar broccoli and sour cream. This is where it all went wrong I mean the broccoli was frozen and it threw off the vibes of the entire potato so I quarantined it to a corner of my plate and tried finishing my lukewarm and no longer hot (as a result of frozen broccoli attack) potato. But overall food was good. Tbh it was mild or in more unkind words bland BUT I am also south Asian so most western food is like that! I was very hungry after waiting so long in line which might have made it taste better but it was pretty good!!
