- Video 10 in a series of 12 videos from basic to adavanced techniques, using Judo as a base for self defence, The first three video's being largely influenced by Kodokan Goshin Jutsu. The series should be followed from video one through twelve, as each stage is sequential in nature, building upon previous stages. We hope you enjoy and find them of use in your own judo and self defence practice.

Prior to Judo becoming predominantly an olympic sport, Atemi waza (striking techniques) were regularly practiced, unfortunatly in the race for sporting dominance the majority of Judo clubs no longer incorporate this facet. This series "Judo for self defence" hopes to re-introduce many aspects of Judo not regularly practiced and make them easily accesable for all Judoka who want them.
Sou praticante de judô a um ano, sendo atualmente faixa azul. E como venho pesquisando a respeito do atemi-waza do judô para incorporar ao judô moderno. Em uma situação de defesa pessoal é imprescindível.
What a breath of fresh air!!!
I thought everyone forgot that Judo was a martial art. Yes there are strikes!
Western pugilism techniques and training have always been a staple in the armed forces of the world! It's the fundamentals that are devastating, not some advanced "tricks".
Great Vid!
I have no idea whether most armed forces train in boxing but wouldn't it be quite dangerous against someone who is wearing a helmet? All he has to do is lower his head, let you punch into the helmet and you'll be down one weapon to say the least. For civilian self-defense boxing is excellent, obviously.
@@linusverclyte4988 Or i bring my little tank. Try hitting that. If you don't understand when you better shouldn't attack an opponent don't reply.
Awesome. Show the world the real Judo. People need to know the self defense and ground game of Judo...let's not leave it forgotten! Ippon
Yep, use all of them... Leant to box (Royal Navy) after junior judo, then karate Goju ryu, Wing chun Gung Fu, for a few years, and finally Tomiki Aikido which has an all round syllabus...32 years... Mix it all up and you have a comprehensive self defence system... Nice one...
Thats 90% boxing. In the practice the best art for punching has been shown is boxing. Military, police y and mma. So well done for adapting. Judo original atemi waza is the striking of japanese jujitsu.
From jiu jitsu, kano took the grappling, and funakoshi the striking, ueshiba the dancing lol.
Thanks for the video
Thanks a lot Master!!!Very nice job!!This is the Jikoro Kano's Judo....the modern Judo is just olimpic Judo..I'm Blue belt..but I knew them from before the "Atemi Waza"...Thanks Master more videos please!!
Guy makes a great video showing the need to be well rounded and have experience in different areas of combat and everyone just hates on his form because he doesn't punch like Floyd Mayweather ...
Unlike so many American video's this is a simple no-nonsense approach to teaching. Thank you.
I believe that Kano-san also adopted some of the strikes from Gichin Funakoshi's Shotokan Karate during their early collaborations.
Judo was born with strikes, an they continue been an essential part of judo as a martial art and for selfdefense. Atemis with many parts of the body like fits, hands, fingers, forearm, elbow, shoulders, head, hip, legs (gery ), knees, etc, etc; also is important the use of different wepons; all these are the legacy of ancient jiujutsu. All are vital part of actual JUDO.
Yeah but virtually all Western clubs just teach sport judo with no strikes until after black belt or no strikes at all.
Nice to see Artemi waza has been rightfully reincorporated into 🥋 Judo OSU!
Great video!
Thats a vey limited view. Can i suggest the book Kodokan Judo by Kano. Theres a section on atemi waza. Other than that a little research on the subject will throw up lots of references. Striking is and always has been a part of Judo, just not in the "sport" of Judo.
i was in judo since i was 6 till 14. I give up becouse i was no interested in competitiion and my sensei forced me into sport championships. If i had the oporutunity to be trained in kodokan judo as an martial art, not a competitive sport, i woud be still into it. Great job in your dojo guys. I wish i could try as you do in my city.
PD: sorry about my english, dont practice enough.
Interesting and éducative video!
Congrats From Paris, France !
Nice striking technique, comments about boxers having a field day are not relevant, as a leg kick or throw is relevant to judoka defending against an aggressive boxer. Only got to be able to fend or parry the first punches to guard against a KO blow, and close the gap then use judo. Dont want to try and defeat a boxer with boxing; but work to your strengths. Very thorough striking video, perhaps the ethic of self defence could be discussed.
If they could stay on their feet Addam, granted. But on the inside, with the leading leg begging to be taken out, a boxer is more than a little limited. Its no good being good at one range and one range only, you've got be be competent at all ranges, whats in the boxers arsenal when he's thrown hard on concrete? or loses his back and gets choked? if they dont capitalize in the transition from kicking distance to punching distance, before it gets to the grapple, its all over. Like all combat sports, that are limited to one range, they are great at that range, but not in others. Its all about being well rounded
Well said
BushidoJuJitsu as a ex boxer who's been doing judo fir 23 years the problem the judoka has against a boxer is the grip phase ...trying for a perfect grip will get you knocked out !!....the Gracie way of diving in for a keg grab is the best way !! ...your limited experience of punching Aldo lets you down in the video ...you punch the karate way and that's crap !!,
BushidoJuJitsu did you study karate as well ?
Thank you for this video! I've been looking for more information on Judo's Atemi-Waza. Do you also incorporate new maneuvers and techniques that have been incorporated in Ne-waza, such as "The Twister lock?"
Great video. Do you recommend training in kickboxing simultaneously with Judo? Do you think it might hinder with learning Judo?
His rear cross is still stuck in it's training phase. I get what he is trying to do, but he should brush up the striking before trying to use it, if he is going to use it in place of timing and spacing for grapples.
Nice Video Sensei. I've been wondering what the best way to begin studying Atemi waza would be. I think it is sad that it is over looked in most Dojo's around the world. Would you recommend a particular way of learning the techniques? (Boxing, kick boxing, etcetera) I'd like my future students to learn as much Judo as they can. I especially like the way you break down traditional technical practice, and practical.
nice work sir
Judo does in fact have strikes called Atemi waza that creator Jigoro Kano adopted from the Tenjin Shinyo Ryu style of Jujutsu. Thye are taught in training but not allowed in competition.
Yes, though the self defence is taught as an addition to regular Judo practice, as opposed to a stand alone system, everything taught within Judo for self defence is built on the strong foundations of formal Judo.

Please feel free to come along anytime, new members are always more than welcome.
Edinburgh Bullshido you mean.
Hello Sensei Ray, first tell you that you make a very good explanation and express yourself very well, I am practical of Ju-Jitsu Japanese, a question Are those Atemis fit to use them in Mi Ju-Jitsu? Greetings from Argentina ✋🥋 .
As a club as often as possible, personaly at least bag work every day. No we don't do no gi or mma. Cant move south but always happy to do the odd course or seminar
This is great! How often do you guys do striking? Do you also do no GI ? Can you move down south so I can come and train with you! Lol
Nearly 10,000 views! Someone likes it.
Actually i bought it at fluid media. The Mizuno suppliers for the UK. The belt is neither here nor there, its just a belt. Take a look at the literature abound on the Atemi waza of Judo, it is vague at best, a punch is a punch though. As Judo is tried and tested as a means of throwing an opponent so to is boxing, and as this is Judo for self defence and not for sport, this is merely an interpretation of Atemi waza, in a practical and pragmatic fashion. Take from it what you will.
Why the black belt is the sparring? Is not correct.
I have always encouraged other martial artists to cross train and study a striking art like boxing to complement their grappling. But I also advise to exercise caution when striking as there is the potential to do serious harm, which could see you charged and convicted of GBH. You may do some serious time inside so please think before you act. You should always use grappling to lock, pin or choke out an assailant first and only revert to striking if you really have to.
wow.
I done 600th like
TheBeroso??? Why don't you show me what Judo is? I am always willing to learn.
Excellent video, very clear explanation. Judo & Ju-Jitsu rule :)
Well yes those locks would be illegal in competition but I was asking if you taught them in the dojo and not for competition.
Liverpool?
Your Judo atemi looks a lot like Shotokan. Good job!
Great stuff. Up close and personal judo is excellent but in anything other than a grappling match you're going to get punched at so you need to be able to defend against that and be able to punch your way in. Obviously a combination of striking and grappling is potent, especially against people who aren't trained in either and just swing for the fences.
Given that judo descended from jujutsu styles of course strikes were and should be part of the curriculum although in truth in most clubs they probably aren't trained very much. This kind of approach should be mandatory: judoka should be able to defend themselves properly and the standard throwing and grappling just isn't enough.
So, is it basically boxing? Not wanting to be sarcastic, i'm being sincere.
As Dan Inosanto pointed out, nearly every system and definitely every part of the world has boxing. There's no monopoly on things like jab, cross, hook, uppercut.
Thx.
Its more on strikes, where is the judo there?
This is judo atemi waza
Is there striking in judo??????
Yes. but it's rarely seen, shown, or practiced - to the point where many up to black belts aren't aware that it's there (unless they do some of the kata - also sadly neglected.)
Because they're not used for sport/competition, they get ignored.
@@richardgodivala4680 is it useful ? By the way thanks for the reply
@@joseramirez4384 Judo? Or the Atemi waza?
In all honesty, since I've learned (some of (the basics of)) Judo Atemi Waza, I've never been in a position to have to use them - thankfully.
The Judo, even without Atemi Waza - definitely useful. Not only does it give you techniques that can absolutely end a fight quickly (potentially crippling the opponent) - it also gives you options where you don't have to, and can control a situation more gently if you aren't seriously threatened.
quite a bit different then from judo original atemi waza..
Jockodo lmfao brilliant
Bom.
O Sensei was Ueshiba of Aikido. Kano was known as Shihan. Not rocket science my friend.
This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "sacrifice throws judo" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Keyandon Judo Process - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my partner got great results with it.
Nice video but i don't really like the idea of following the punch with your body and turning your eyesight away from your opponent: it could be very dangerous
lugi93 33e33 whatch any boxer or MMA fighter throw a punch. If they aren't complete dogshit, they will twist with the punch. You're meant to twist your body into all of your punches, that doesn't mean you take your eyes off of the other fighter.
hmmm, i did Judo up to blue belt until my early teens for 5 years and never been thought strikes...It must have been the sport or a watered down version of the original thing...
It is very rare that when you learn judo you also learn this. It is often left until the advanced ranks or is left out entirely. I would bet that most judo black belts don't even know that there is a striking component in judo.
they don't look anything like those punches though and since were limited to kata, are completely useless to any judoka since they've never used them on a resisting opponent.
a punch isn't a punch, these punches are found only in that form in combat sports, jujitsu punched only to the body as a softener for grappling and not like boxing punches. All head strikes in atemi jutsu are open handed so as not to damage the hand. Those punches are nothing whatsoever to do with Japanese arts, the defense also is combat sport, covering with the elbows and forearms is derived from sparring with gloves.
Sorry....O-sensei would have been more respectful. :)
c'mon letting the scottish side down!! butting someone is like heedin a footbaw chin down hips back boom lol
Dude, if you're gonna put a sufix in his name, at least be more respectful and use the "sama" or "sensei" ones :)))
Hey, thats boxing
(If this were a boxing video): oh that's vicious, devistating, precise, elegant, perfection, incredibly difficult to master
(Since it's a judo video): that's pathwtic, it'd never work in a real fight, you're just over complicating things, this is stolen off of boxing, this'd get you killed in a real fight, this is child's play
Boxing no judo 😂😂😂
Judo techniques are in 3 categories: nage waza(throwing techniques), katame waza (grappling techniques) and atemi waza(striking techniques). This is atemi waza.
this is not judo
Sorry I'm a judo red belt and atamei waza is part of the kata.
the atemi as it exists in the kata is overly formal stylised nonsense that I'm fairly certain bares little to no resemblance to the atemi of Kano's day.
Hey, you don't know what judo is
your hands are way too low. a boxer would have a field day.
That's because he's a Judoka striking. @ 10:00 he kinda goes into a grapplers ideology of how a Judoka would approach striking realistically. A boxer doesn't box with a grappling stance, a grappler doesn't grapple with a boxers stance. It would make sense for a judoka to throw strikes from a grapplers stance and mind set if that's his/her strength.
Semper Fi: I practiced judo for at least 15 years. When I have had to use judo, I have not used boxing strikes. I use palms, forehead, elbows, and shins.
I have done a little boxing and muay thai, but in comparison to what I have used in a street fight, my judo has kept me safe.
I love to train with other styles. I'm all about improving my skills. Judo, depending on the individuals common sense is practical in any situation, bjj included. Having wisdom is most important.
@@danylcooper2143 judo does not need bjj
This isn't judo there are no punches or kicking in judo
There's no punching or kicking in MODERN SPORT judo. Traditional judo most certainly included those aspects of combat. I've seen techniques become illegal and disappear since the 90's, let alone since the early 1900's.
You should try a bit of Jiu Jitsu if you want to learn to apply your Judo in a self defence environment, learn "illegal" techniques etc.
