How the war in Ukraine is impacting this Slovakian Botanical Garden

  • Today I am speaking with Jozef & Philip who run Botany Park in Bojnice Slovakia which borders Ukraine to the east. The impacts of the war are obviously felt globally, but Jozeph has seen his energy costs rise significantly due to the ongoing conflict. Which have made it tough to keep the cactus warm during the harsh winters there. We tour the greenhouse and discuss his story as a xerophile.
If you would like to donate, we have put together a go fund me, page to assist with the costs of heating the greenhouse.

He’s got a beautiful collection. One thing I did notice is that a lot of them have red tint on the bottom of the plant. He must have a lot of iron in the water over there. But good for him for growing so many nice specimens in such a harsh environment.

I feel this one. Energy prices are through the roof here in the UK too. I know a lot of BCSS growers have either reduced their minimum greenhouse temps or turned off the heating altogether. A cactus nursery I recently visited for a video has really struggled to keep their stock alive. Huge repercussions for Europe's reliance on Russian gas.

Wow such a beautiful setup and to have grown them all from seed!
Governments declare wars not the people of those nations. We are all human, all one! I hope the war ends and stability returns to the region and the world.
Cost of living especially groceries has skyrocketed here in Australia.

Great video! 👍 Hello from Arizona.
Hey, 10 degrees (F) is way too cold for those Melocactus, as well as most of any other species of cactus. We don't see any Prickly Pears, but some of them can take the colder weather.

@@ronhobbs8038 They got themselves in this situation. The UN/NATO signed a treaty to not go past Germany then they broke that treaty letting Poland join then another and another and Russia has warned them for years to stop expanding eastward and respect the treaty. This war was completely avoidable if NATO didn't break it. It would he the same scenario as the cuban missile crisis. America didn't take very kindly to that.
