I just retired this year. I completely agree on three things. I have a house for rent and my new tenant has wheelchair access needs but it's hard to find such a house in our town. My house is ranch style but the bathroom was not wheel chair accessible. I told my tenant that I will remodel the bathroom wheelchair accessible on my expenses about $20k. I happened to have some funds to do it and the tenant was so happy. It made me even happier!!

Spend money on your health. Eat better, take a yoga class, buy a bike and ride it often.

I retire on May 1st at 54 years old We have a trip to Japan planned to celebrate. We made some sacrifices while I was working and now we can afford 2 or 3 trips a year in retirement and can double our giving budget. I also worked long enough that our time is our own, I will probably work in some capacity, but I will not have to.

If you downsize to a smaller house and become a minimalist, a low maintenance yard. You won't have much to do.

I am currently on a once in a lifetime cruise that I planned 2.5 years ago a year before I retired. I have multiple trips planned and try to have something to look forward to for a couple years in the future. Planning and anticipation are part of the fun.

Some materials goods kind of ARE experiences, like my ocean rowing shell (I go out weekly with a small group), my cello (I’m in two community orchestras and a chamber group) and my folding bikes which we toss in the back and drive somewhere for a long weekend (we’re in LA) and ride our bikes in nature. Very good suggestions in this video. Also realize: in retirement, you have go-go years, slow-go years, and eventually no-go years. Go while you can go!

It’s funny that as we age and money is more available the less we want to buy “stuff” traveling is what we look forward to the most and along with that exploring new hobbies. Contacting time becomes more fulfilling

Completely, totally agree with all three.Thank you for sharing this terrific wisdom. As an elderly woman shared with me years ago, "Build good memories." I'm so thankful I listened to her. Building good memories has, in turn, led me to contented living without regret (to the best of my abilities).

Do you agree that buying these 3 things can increase happiness?

  • @user-iz5qg5so6l

I agree. We are nearing retirement in a few years when we turn 65. My husband has spent many years working on our yard...fertilizing, spreading seed etc. It's not something he has always enjoyed doing. This last year we hired a yard service to do it instead. He is a happy man now that someone else is taking care of it. Those hours throughout each year are his again.

Yes. I agree. I think the quote at the end is crucial throughout your life. Your first most valuable asset is time, with health a close second. In the buying experiences section I wish you would include getting training or coaching in what you love to do. Playing any sport with increasing skill is a joy, joining amateur competitions or not. Leaning to sew, write, make furniture, dance all have classes and coaching available, not to mention the communities around them. IMHO the return on investment far outreaches vacations, but I admit I am prejudiced. Being generally frugal it took me awhile to pay for a table tennis coach. I has been worth every dollar and I wish I'd started sooner.

Agree with your points. When giving to family or others, be clear to them on your thoughts about the gift. Be aware that some begin to expect it and use others as a financial safety net.

Very good analysis. Buying things that enable experiences on a recurring basis is also great; I give as an example an inflatable canoe on which we have had several great days out; and our grandchildren are old enough now to enjoy it when they visit. Doing jobs around the house that you enjoy is great;pay someone to do things that you don’t enjoy. Do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do - works before retirement too

Yes, my wife and I have found that all three things increase happiness. We’re still working which made our family vacation to Yellowstone very doable several years ago. We wouldn’t trade that experience or more recent trip to Scotland for anything. I gladly pay for lawn mowing, trimming, to spend more quality time with my wife and not to have to purchase, maintain, and store mower, etc. To each their own.

Totally agree with these 3 things, especially the last one. Years ago we engaged Merry Maids to clean the house once every 2 weeks, which freed us up to spend our weekends enjoying experiences. It also removed a source of conflict between my spouse and I. Best money I ever spent. As I like to say, it’s whole lot cheaper than marriage counseling.

I agree on all the things you've mentioned.
But the first thing in your list should be giving & trying to enhance the well being of others, especially deprived children. And talking of memories ..... just visualising the relief & comfort we've managed to bring in people's lives is the greatest contentment one can get. It's time & money well- spent & great for your mental health.

Retirement is not a dress rehearsal, it is the main event.
Indeed, you want to create memories and be generous with others. And of course, be good to yourself.
    If not now, when?

Every year in July I go back home to the Philippines for our town fiesta and my Class Reunion and this brings me ultimate excitement. It is something I look forward to with eager participation and it is an experience I love to reminisce weeks, months after the occasion. So this confirms your Item #1. I relish meeting my high school classmates after 52 years since we parted. As for #2, I forgo a lot of luxuries so I can send poor but deserving students to school. The difference you make in their lives is tremendous. Impactful. And #3, buying time is a non-issue. I can save time by hiring help to do my laundry, clean the house, cooking my meals, tending the yard, doing the interminable errands specially when they involve waiting in line, so that I can have more time to do the things that I enjoy so that I can generate more income to enjoy more my retirement. I validate your 3 points squarely. USE YOUR MONEY TO MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE WORLD. It is better to light one candle, than to curse the darkness a thousand times. Amen.

While I agree that the three suggestions are refreshing and beneficial to one's well-being [aka "soul"], it is also a sad fact of American life that one's income has gone down between 20%- 40%, so the ability to spend decreases upon retirement. That's true, I think, unless you're talking about the top 10% of wealthy retirees. Indeed, retirees are ENCOURAGED to prepare, plan, and follow a pretty strict BUDGET. So much for benevolence, I guess.
