7.62, packs a punch, high velocity, and great at ripping holes through almost any wall. So when you put it into an infantry man’s hands, what do you get? The M240 has quite a few names, such as FN MAG, not sure what it says in French, but it means General Purpose Machine Gun. I call it the modern M60, more on that later. The M240 is a 7.62x51mm NATO full automatic belt fed general purpose machine gun. It was designed in the 1950’s by FN Herstal, a Belgian gun company being produced and manufactured in the United States, by Colt, FN America, Barrett, and US Ordnance by the late 1970’s. Ammo capacity is dependent on the shooter, commonly 50 round ammo pouches for infantry not moving via vehicles. Furthermore, it has a 850 round count every minute, an effective firing range of up to 1,800 meters. The M240B is placed in the hands of the United States armed forces, NATO countries like Poland, and obscure countries like Argentina. Seriously, why does Argentina have M240’s when they’re not even in NATO? This all may sound great, but carrying just the M240B alone could weigh about 28 lbs or 12.5 Kilos, which is why you’ll commonly see infantry rather using a mounted M240, or the M249, a 5.56 version of the M240.
-Gun Safety Check: Treat every gun as if loaded. Do not point your gun if you have no intent to harm/destroy it. Keep your finger off he trigger until ready to fire. Ensure that you know your target and it’s surroundings.
*Gun Design*
The M240 is a general purpose machine gun, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. People have probably heard of the M249 more than the M240, so for reference it’s a 7.62 M249 instead of 5.56. It is gas operated, belt fed by disintegrating links, air cooled, and automatic. Using a long piston stroke gas system, a gas regulator is located on the bottom of the barrel. Because this is the United States we’re talking about, this gun has an easy interchangeable barrel in case it gets too hot. If you notice the receiver/feed tray is a more silver grey than the rest of the gun, that’s because it’s made of stamped steel. You will usually see this weapon mounted on vehicles. The M240 has a picatinny rail system on the cover for you to attach an ACOG sight. The barrel is surrounded by a heat shield going from the body to the end of the gas pressure system AKA the second tube, so you don’t touch the barrel while it’s hot. It does usually have a built-in bipod below the front sight near the muzzle end of the gun. However, the use of tripods is also seen. The M240 has been seen to survive all type of conflicts, including the desert, snow, damp forests of Viet- I shouldn’t go there. To load or reload the weapon, you must check and make sure there is no jamming, or round in chamber. Maybe remove your link if you have one. Don’t look directly inside the tray or else you’ll have smoke puff into your face. After you know your gun is clear, open the cover, take your link, put it securely on top of the feed tray, then pull the charging handle.
*Variants*
There are a few variants to the M240, including the M240E1, the Marine Corps’ version of the M240 for LAV-25 or other vehicles. It has a spade grip like the M240D/M240Delta for flexibility. The M240C/M240Charlie is a right handed M240 for the M1 Abrams tank and it’s derivatives, as well as the M2 Bradley. The M240Delta is configured for aircraft mounted, and ground transportation vehicles, different iron sights are included to fit the spade grip and trigger group to accommodate the spade grip, which has a sort of balance on the weight when firing. The difference between the E1 and the Delta is that the Delta has an optical picatinny rail system on the cover.
*History*
During the 1950’s, the M73 and M219 were the only two guns used on top of tanks. It didn’t have a high reliability, so the US tried to replace it. The MAG 58 would be used in testing, as well as the Navy SEAL’s M60E3, because special operations forces usually are conservative and don’t like replacements, so they wanted to see which was more reliable. As it turns out the MAG 58 was more reliable, having the least amount of jams or broken parts while firing 50,000 rounds. Specific results: MRBS stands for Mean Rounds Before Stoppages, which counts any malfunction that can easily be repaired, and MRBF stands for Mean Rounds Before Failure, which is something like a gun part breaking. The MAG 58 could spit out 2,962 until a jam, 6,442 before something broke, and 50,000 rounds were fired. The M60E2 only had 846 MRBS with almost twice the amount of rounds before a failure within 50,000 rounds. The M219 had 215 MRBS but 2,675 MRBF for only 19,000 rounds, besting the M60. Soon after, the M240 would be the standard issue for mounted turrets for on-ground vehicles, and was later made to be used for Marines that weren’t using a car, and could be held with your two hands. But what makes this gun so widespread across NATO countries, from France to the UK? Christ’s sake this thing is heavy, weighing up to 25lbs. With NATO doctrine and tactics, allied countries focus on NOT dying, by having forces be smart and not rush an enemy until you have fire superiority. This sounds like common sense, but I’ve seen both in-game and historical moments where this isn’t the case. They do this by suppressing the enemy with two MG teams firing at one position, and have one MG team fire in a burst, and then the other MG responds with a burst, which scares the enemy a bit more. This also conserves ammo and prevents the barrel from overheating while making it sound like full automatic fire, and it gets more rounds put down range. It even prevents barrels from overheating. The element of surprise is especially great during a battle, because you don’t want a fair fight if it means your life is on the line. The M240 is great for flanking side positions, as waiting for the enemy to line up, align with their cone of fire, and have multiple people die at once is easier than having your gunner focus on one guy at a time, and with NATO’s teaching of cone of fire, the gunner can effectively take down a group of enemies easier. Have you ever wanted an automatic sniper rifle? Squads have been seen putting gunners on higher elevations as if they are overwatch, so that instead of having to use big math terms the average grunt couldn’t understand, automatic M240 fire makes it so that you can just fire until your enemy goes down instead of taking one precise shot because you’re using a bolt action. And because the M240 is in 7.62, the M249 makes velocity more of a worry.
*Conc.*
Reliability. Infantry. Firepower. There is nothing more deadly than a Marine and his weapon. The M240 might not be the Rambo gun you’re looking for, but it certainly is better. Whether you’re on patrol in Ramadi on top of a tank, or with the rest of your squad on your boots, this will provide accuracy, make sure the enemy won’t pop their heads out while you’re firing. Maybe you just don’t like the 5.56 of the M249, or you think that an M2 Browning is a bit too excessive and the fact that you can’t carry it is too dumb to have it in the first place. But either way, you’ll love firing this weapon, whether it is the Bravo, Golf, or Echo variant. Also I’m so glad that the NGSW isn’t replacing the M4 and M240B wow.
