Came here for the story...and didn't expected to see cao huang actor from love 020...he is good here! Also have not seen him enough so he was little unrecognisable here.
as someone who has finished this drama- i wanted to write a quick review in case anyone wanted to see this drama but wasn't sure whether to continue. if this is out of 10, i give it an 11. if this is a test, the drama passed with flying fcking colors. it's honestly tragic because after watching this drama, i went on a whole slew of crime drama binge-watchings- and this is by far the best one. it ruined all the other ones for me because everytime i watched any detective dramas- i couldn't help but come back to this, and think of how superior this was to everything else. bai yu has the charisma of a god & luo fei is the best character i've ever seen. he's genius, but with a human side. rather quirky, eccentric- and overall very well done. he has moments of self-doubt where we see his humanity- and those moments are what really brings the character to life. the romance here is not over the top, and the female lead is not annoying unlike some other dramas. the main focus is on the ML & the FL serves as more a side character that helps the ML solve cases. the FL is definitely done well- with a good personality and none of the damsel in distress type feelings you get from a lot of these dramas. she's badass, has killer kung fu, and is quick to learn. there's no real romance, only hints of blossoming feelings between the leads. u get a glimpse here or there but there's no kissing or confessing involved. the transitions between case to case are a little bit hasty & they don't tie very well to each other. there's the impending sense of doom that happens with the big crime lord, but other than that- each case can be watched on its own. a little bit different from the Ancient Detective where the script ties together really well & each case is a cog in the wheel that ends up revealing a shocking secret. With this drama, you get multiple cases that are all extremely exciting and thrilling to watch- but can all be watched in standalone. Even for those that aren't huge fans of crime and mystery & are simply watching for the sake of it- I think that this drama will not disappoint. it's incredibly addictive and you'll find yourself hanging to the edge of seat as the murderer is revealed. What makes this drama noteworthy and different from other crime dramas- is the murderer themselves. not only will the explanations behind each crime leave your jaw dropping in awe- the murderer themselves will have you gaping in disbelief. its not like other dramas where you'll have a 3rd person come in and do the crime, or where the detective eventually manages to find the culprit- who is completely new & hastily introduced. In this drama, the culprit is always the ones we least expect. people that appear on screen for brief flashes or those that we already meet prior to the unveiling. essentially a game of among us- where the imposter is always amongst the people the audience sees or knows. it's perfection. *chefs kiss* only issue is that it ends on a cliffhanger & i dont see a season 2.

If you are looking for thriller crime detective series, detective l is perfect. The setting in 1930's , characters costume everything is perfect. Every time there is new case which luo fei and xio man solves. Luo fei is not typical detective whom you see in every drama like serious and lifted eyebrow guy , he is smart, playful and jolly character and that's what make him different. I loved all the series, every single case . Those saying ending is messed up , all I want to say in whole series luo fei was the one who solved and cracked every mystery And at last he asked xio man if she believes in him was actually asking audience in my view point . Now it's up to you people how far your thinking is improved after watching. He left last crumb for you to solve and it is not messed up at all.
I love this show so much! The characters, their costume, the backdrop, the cinematography, the plot, the execution of the cases are phenomenal. Not to mention that the pacing is very quick, so you can rewatch the drama again to discover all the details for yourself (I have watched till ep 8 hahaha and boy what a ride!) totally recommend to those who love detective stories liek sherlock or Detective Conan.
I’m so glad I gave this drama a chance. It turned out to be my favorite Chinese crime drama thus far. Really well done from casting, set & costume design, editing. Especially appreciate the attention to detail with a smart plot/script. Highly recommend. 💯

I’ve very quickly become a big fan of Bai Yu! Great role-fun, intriguing, very smart, style and charisma. I really enjoy the rapport he has with Una Luo and Ji Chen. I love the cinematography, fashion, mystery and style of this show. Happy to have discovered this show this summer.

Sherlock Holmes in Shanghai / Watson is played by a female. The set pieces are nice to look at and at first glance the actors are very good. Let's see where this series goes. I have learned not to base my expectations on the first episode since production sometimes gets lazy as a series progresses.
The first episode looks very promising. And as expected, Bai Yu is doing very well in his acting. His tough charm is engaging viewers into the series more!
