How does the strength compare to a pre-drilled hole though? My worry would be that with all the vibrations and imperfect lineup that the screw would not be able to grip as well and would not hold as strongly.
I use em all the time nothing a self tapper can't fix but to be fair the Philips head screws are dogshit if drilling in an awkward position or into something slanted

In order to create threads in thicker or harder material material self tappers require a hole to be pre-drilled. Self drillers can both create threads and drill into material, no pre-drilling required. Self drillers have a point like a drill bit.

With right bit you dont have to hold the screw with fingers. Those threads are quite sharp. Also if you dont stop in the end the screw easily ruins the hole and it will not hold well.
Good job you screwed up. You used a self tapper and stripped out the threads it cut. Be cause that screw is designed to attach something to that thin metal that is at least 4mm thick.

Self-tapping screws don't have a drill bit like structure on the bottom.
Not this one, to tap means to cut threads, that structure at the bottom is just drilling.

У шурупов мцпсп шлиц PH2. Битой PZ крутить, ну такое себе.
