I want to see the league run completely independent of the NBA. Run the league and pay the players without being subsidized by NBA. Let's see that happen. If the WNBA is truly a viable league why shouldn't it be run like every other league and business? I think we all know the answer to that question.
IMAGINE if the league earned a profit, lol… Even after their most successful year ever in league history, they still lost millions of dollars. You can’t compare WNBA players to workers in a profitable factory a hundred years ago or to NBA players in a multibillion dollar NBA today. Some people don’t understand how numbers work. This is a perfect time to use their “leverage”? What leverage? So the NBA, who basically own the WNBA, should do a new deal so they can lose more money? They want to share revenue when the yearly revenue is in the red. I love Jemele , but this makes no sense to me.
@kacornish1 Apparently, the history of sports negotiations went over your head. So. I am going to make it simple for dummies in finance of sports. If the WNBA is projected to continue to lose money, why are people trying to purchases a team? Why are companies investing more money into the league? Is there any companies or people trying to invest in you? No. Why? Cause you are not projected to be a profitable entity. Get it!
The NBA also wasn’t profitable for much of its history, the WNBA is much younger and turning the corner much faster than the NBA did relatively. It takes investment in players so they can be their best and focus on your league, not just owners and outside investors taking 91% of the revenue and undermining the product when the WNBA players have to overextend themselves in the off seasons w extra leagues and endorsements instead of focusing on the WNBA

What leverage? 27 years of losing money? This isn't about marketing. It's a product too few want to watch. It's just that simple. This isn't men vs women. It's DOLLARS! The dollars go where the demand is and the demand for the WNBA product just isn't their in enough numbers. All those examples are in leagues and industries that actually make money--so it's only natural that the workers/players would want a greater share as a result of their productivity. This is NOT an apples-to-apples comparison. People want to watch the NBA, NFL and MLB. The average value of a WNBA team is $96M. The average value for a NBA team is $4.42 BILLION. The WNBA was launched with the expectation that women would support the league. They didn't. They don't. That is where the problem lies. Women don't care to go to a WNBA game nor watch it on TV. Solve THAT problem and you solve the money issue for the WNBA.
And yet the ratings and attendance have steadily increased. Owners are losing money in mens sports as well - if you own a team they understand the cost and they often write off. The NBA took a long time to get where they are at, so why not use the leverage while the stock is going up for the league?
@@kbmariontv1736 Yes, ratings and attendance were up fast season, but the league still lost tens of millions of dollars. While it was an improvement, it still just adds to the hundreds of millions already lost over the last 20+ years. Also yes, some NBA teams do lose money in some years. But I doubt you can find a team that loses millions of dollars every year. Also note that all NBA teams have valuations well over a billion dollars and are most are owned by billionaires. They don't have any leverage
This is ridiculous. Leverage when ur losing money. Ready the room

Absolutely ridiculous to suggest that professional athletes only became financially successful because of unions.
I'd say player unions became successful because players had lots of leverage.
😂

Cant get onboard with this one.
I love the WNBA. I'm hoping they get more and more popular.
Excellent analysis! This needs to be shared EVERYWHERE!
Reality check, you have no leverage whatsoever when you’re loosing 40,000,000$
You do have leverage when you just signed a 2 billion dollar media rights deal.
@ it’s not that big a media deal, so…I’m not saying they shouldn’t get more, what they’re is worth way more, but the popularity is very new
I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!
