There were some serious complaints about this kit on one of the SR20 FB groups. I wonder if the first batch has some QC issues that are resolved now. It’s nice to finally have the option of upgrading the transmission meant for the engine instead of swapping in something and compromising on weight or shifting feel or anything else. But definitely need to see some solid results and feedback on this from a trusted source.
The first few had some machining issues that were fixed. We got one of the first ones and had to wait for new parts, the new stuff has awesome machining quality. Since this is going int one of our cars, you can bet we will be doing long-term follow-up.
Stay away from anything speedtech. Alex is pretty much a known scammer and has the worst customer service possible. Most of his parts are cheaply made in china and not worth wasting your money on
Man, back in the early and mid 2000s, the first two years I went through several transmissions and the only practical upgrade were Z32 5 speeds with a bit of creative packaging. First stock trans was still on the relatively modest stockish engine, second one I was definitely living on borrowed time with a T04R build. I'd barely gotten a week to enjoy the Z32 upgrade when some twerp stole my pignose off my driveway while we were moving. They plowed it into a Lexus on their joyride and totalled it. Course I didn't find out the specifics until an officer came to my door trying to charge me with a hit and run four months after the fact. All that time it was sitting in impound racking up fines.
We terminated 8 standard gear boxes went to an Australian ppg dog gear set in my sons 180sx fun times when you select 3 gear instead of 5 gear and yes it will drop right in lol . Love your channel thanks.
@@AdmissionGaming not gonna blame him tbh, he wouldn't know the history that spans back to the early 2000s. Alex has basically burnt every person in Australia and he now seems to be targeting overseas markets that wouldn't know better.
My next gear set for my s13 . Love my Doug Nash 5 speed dog box in my camaro . Bout time some made a obtainable gearset for the s13 , rather than the big , hp parasitic , stock trans route.
I just finished rebuilding my S14 SR's FS5W71C. I considered the speed tek dogbox for about 2.3 seconds. Power goals and the desirability for streetability didn't warrant the cost for going to the dogs.
@ precisely. My HP goals are within the constraints of the factory transmission and this car spends its time on the street with rare jaunts on a track. Dogboxes are great for a race application, but it’s not the right application for my purpose
Speedtek have an absolutely horrendous reputation here in Australia. Alex K has been blacklisted on most Aussie forums due to his scam artist behaviour. I would hate for unsuspecting US customers to fall prey without knowing how shady this guy is
We are not going to work on improving the SR20 fwd transmission. It is so bad, like the WRX 5-speed it is unfixable. If you have a high power fwd SR, get a B15 or P11 transmission.
They had bad machining on these gearsets and Speedtek didn't get back to them. The box housing is just too small. Rb25 box would be better for high hp application.
The whine is because the gears have straight teeth instead of helical teeth, as stock transmissions have; that's why in stock cars, the rear gear whines too, because it is the only one with straight teeth.
@maddecentracing needs to see this, he was just talking about his S14’s transmission needing a rebuild. Of course he’s running a 2J so might be looking at something else :)
Have lost a lot of respect for Motoiq for supporting Speedtek products. Either you haven't done your research into the decades of dodgy sales and horrible warranty and aftersale support from Alex K (Speedtek owner) or you're turning a blind eye and supporting any company for $$$ now. Hopefully it's the former and not the later. Speedtek and Alex K have been blacklisted from the forums here in Aus lol. Please don't support him selling dodgy products overseas now to a new group of unsuspecting customers...
I was expecting something that makes the internals of the transmission stronger to withstand the torque while making it streetable, instead of a transmission swap. But it's just a straight cut gear dog box conversion. Definitely more for motorsports than for street use. Even the Nismo six speed for all S chassis models is an expensive upgrade that is just slightly stronger than the factory six speed from the S15.
@@motoiq the 45 isn't that big, handles up to 400TQ without mods. The supporting electronics are now off the shelf. It shifts quick, it clutch kicks if you're into that. Down in AUS, they're putting the 8HP in everything now. There's an NA Miata in Poland with an 8HP.
$4500 for the set with the main shaft. Do you know if the main shaft and yolk are actually larger diameters than the factory SR20 shaft? Not just stronger but actually larger diameter?
Easy fix, ditch the 71c shitbox and install a z32 30a. There’s a reason why 30a is used in chassis like kouki z31 turbo, z32, r32/33 both rwd and awd, pathfinder/frontier/xterra
Z32 trans with a common shifter relocation adapter will absolutely fit in an S13 without modifying the tunnel. I have one in my S13. No beating of the tunnel required whatsoever and the shifter sits about 3/4" left of center. Yes, not a dog box if that is what you're looking for. But in stock form it will take as much or more torque than what was stated this kit will and not whine while doing it. Paid $1849.95 plus shipping for my new Nissan OEM 98+ Spec Z32 Manual Transmission.
Man you taught me something, the stock trans is such a tight fit that I was thinking no way the Z32 trans is going to fit in there without some beating. For drifting we had to fab new trans tunnels for just about whatever we were putting in there. A lot of that was just to get faster access to the bellhousing bolts though. You must not be in the USA because the last year we got the Z32 waa 96.
Still say this is the most underrated RUclips channel for knowledgeable car content.
This true back in the physical media days too
💯
Absolutely. I hope we can push this Channel to 250k in 2025.
I wish I had this type of info during the forum days, without getting flamed 😂
Another informative and technically innovative video! Would be so cool to see a followup showing the build and some driving to see how it performs
That is coming!

Scammer? We ordered the parts and they came, the machining looks really good except for a few clearances on the first run that we addressed.
it a hard pass for me on any of these products.
I’m glad I saw this before I decided to beat my transmission tunnel for a larger trans bell housing.

What wrong with cd?
In the case of the S Chassis it is too big for the tunnel so you have to mod the chassis.

@motoiq thoughts on the spec v 6 speed with p12 bell housing?
Haven't done it yet. I gave up on FWD Nissans.

I wanna see this in a 180sx or 240sx. I wanna know how loud it is compared to other transmissions with straight cut gears lol

The initial machining problems have been corrected and were super minor. We didn't even return the parts and just corrected the problems ourselfs.
Hi Mike.
The whine is because the gears have straight teeth instead of helical teeth, as stock transmissions have; that's why in stock cars, the rear gear whines too, because it is the only one with straight teeth.
We explain this in the video. Differentials do not have straight cut gears and if they whine, something is wrong with them.
@motoiq oh, my bad, didn't notice.
Curious about that blue, late-model Sentra (?) in the back
It is a Nissan Project

In the first few seconds of the video, we said it was for a racecar. The Nismo transmission isn't strong enough as well.
What’s the difference between faceplate and dog gears?
Faceplate takes up more room and the plates are thinner on one side.
More knowledge for the knowledge god
The other option is just get a Tremec TKX trans or T56 magnum
Trans tunnel needs to be modded and syncro box instead of a dog box.
Is this going in the AE 86?
Umm, it's a Nissan trans and we said where it's going in the first few seconds of the video.

In this day in age, it makes more sense to go with a ZF 8HP.
