- The Transfăgărășan Pass has been described as the best road in the world!
Built in the 70s to escape a Soviet invasion, it makes for a wonderful bike ride to the top and an epic decent. It rarely creeps up to 10% gradients which is perfect for our big ass fully loaded touring bicycles. We'd been in Romania for a week ish and had been loving the varying landscapes and rough and readiness of it. It's not the easiest country to cycle through cause of the bad roads in some areas and difficulties with language. However, despite hard faces, the people are generally very sound and happy to see you on your bike.
The Transfăgărășan Pass should be on the bucket list for any avid bike tourer. It's probably one of the easiest mountain passes. At over 2000m it was the highest road we cycled and of the mountain roads, certainly one of the easiest. What's not as easy is dealing with all the fumes! It's pretty heavy going with traffic, even though we left early, it was still proper busy with traffic coming to a standstill in the tunnel near the top. The car park was pretty much full but on our bicycles we were laughing. Honestly there's a sheer joy of cycling past grumpy drivers stuck going up hill in a traffic jam. The descent is long and very fun, since it's not too steep, you have more opportunity to just chill and enjoy the cycle.
On the other side, we entered Transylvania and found an amazing campsite, barely listed anywhere and what felt like the best kept secret. A campsite with all the facitilities and no one else there apart from some young guys travelling Romania, it was also Free FREEEEEEEEEE.

The best time to cycle here is in June, the road is officially closed from Balea Cascada to Balea Lac, the road is empty and the cyclists have the road only for them. It's really fun! :)

Romanian shepherd raven and provide protection (wolves and bears). They are trained to accompany tourists.

It's called, Camping Drăguş, Făgăraş, there aren't really any signs for it but it's on Google maps

Yeah it was all filmed spring / summer 2018, then basically didn't look at any of the footage or pics till spring this year! I'm bad for procrastinating but actually it's more fun reliving the trip through editing. I couldnt have edited and uploaded on the trip, too much effort!
