I used to work at Walmart in the late 80's as a cashier and at the Customers Service Desk. I really miss the feel of the old stores. It was just a cozy place to me, the narrow asiles, stacked shelves, and less harsh lighting. The area where they sold fish was especially nice, a little dark and humid with bubbling background noise and colorful lighting from all of the aquariums. I ate at the snack bar often on my lunch break, mostly got pizza slice or hot dog and icee.
How does the Walmart back when Sam Walton was still alive compared to the ones today? I think he wouldn’t be very pleased to see how his stores are ran now.
@@oldradiosnphonographs Yes, I think you're right. Sam Walton's big idea was to put customers first. There was even a big "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign above the exit when I worked there. They took that down not long after he died.

@@WhiteTree97it’s a great job for any high school or college student. My 20 year daughter makes 19 in stocking. She only works part time. She used to be a waitress and made more but dealing with bad customers drives her crazy.

24 hour Walmart's were still a thing until a few years back. Then covid suddenly and quickly put an end to it and sadly they will probably never bring the 24 hour operations back ever again. That damn virus.. Ugh. 😒

Ok, this is my new favorite video on all of RUclips. I've been waiting literally decades to again see a good video taken from inside a Wal-Mart store during the golden age of the 80's and early 90's. What we have here is the type of Wal-Mart we grew up with here in Missouri back in the day. I miss it so much. It was absolutely a better company back then. Supercenters came in right around the time this video was made and Sam Walton passed away. After that, everything started to become more corporate, impersonal, and less focused on a quality customer experience. In '97, I worked at a Wal-Mart that still looked mostly like this one and some aspects were still good. But the Wal-Mart of 2023 is COMPLETELY different than what you see in this video and the stores I worked back then.
For those who didn't have Wal-Mart around in the 70's and 80's: They were usually about half or 3/4 the size of a modern Supercenter. There was no grocery side, but we did have the "Food & Candy" section across from the registers with a couple of aisles of chips, soda, crackers, cookies, and other snacks. The ceilings were much lower than what you see in modern "Walmart" stores, which actually made for a more personal, warm, pleasant shopping experience than the warehouse vibe of today's stores. Wal-Mart back then usually had a Snack Bar, which was often located right across from the checkout lanes as you were leaving with your cart filled with paper bags. The smell of freshly popped buttery popcorn filled the air. Plus there was that glorious ICEE machine.
I could go on for hours and hours reminiscing about these smaller Wal-Mart department stores ("Discount Cities / Division 1 stores) of the 80's and 90's. @VampireRobot - If you have any more of these from smaller Wal-Marts back then, I would be stoked to see them! Thank you for uploading this!

That's exactly how I remember Walmart stores, growing up. I went there this morning and there were only about 2 actual cashiers, and like 20 self checkout lanes. I think eventually they will completely phase out all cashiers and make everyone check out their own groceries. Sad

Shame his children are such dirtbags. Like did you not learn anything from your father? He left you this massive empire that has made you wealthy beyond belief and you did nothing to earn it besides being his heir. The least you could do is honor his legacy by treating the workers right.

A Walmart still using NCR 2552 registers in 1992 is impressive!. There's a few tech upgrades to those registers: a credit card reader and an alphanumeric pole display. One of the cool things about Walmart is their technology. It's been a big reason they're as successful as they are today. Fun fact: the IBM/Toshiba registers in Walmart stores today are maintained through a contract with NCR.
When I was in fifth grade, about a year before this was shot, we took a field-trip to NCR's headquarters. It was impressive, though the only useful fact I remember learning there is that the U.K. is five hours ahead of Eastern time, which I picked up from a spread of labeled clocks on a wall.
I wonder if they were able to make it into Y2K, or did they have the problem of interpreting dates beyond 1999, as was the case with the antediluvian IBM 368x? I know for certain the 4683s and NCR 7052s did make it, since there were UK chains still using them - I even once saw a 4683 with a C&P terminal being used at a John Lewis department store 15 years ago, complete with the original dot matrix Model 2 printer and green dot matrix alphanumeric display, which I thought was impressive considering that most UK chains by then had replaced their old hardware with newer systems, particularly as a consequence of Y2K date interpretation fears.
@@AurumUsagi I want to say “probably” but I don’t know for certain. I know other than basic adding machine capabilities, the NCR 2552 was dependent on the store controller for everything, and in the late 1980s, new technology came out to allow the registers to be run off a PC-based host controller, so if the controller was telling the date to the registers, and the PC could handle Y2K, then it would seem the register should have been able to keep up. While Y2K was a valid concern, it was also used as an opportunity for tech companies to push folks to later technology, abandoning legacy equipment, sometimes needlessly. This is when a lot of department store chains standardized on one platform, instead of just concentrating on a whole solution.

For real. Walmart didn't get to WNY until around 1999. Same with Target.
Walmart was new to me in the early '90s, after our move to Ohio, where we also had Kmart. From Virginia before then, I was familiar with Kmart, Ames, and Zaire. I don't have fond memories of Walmart, and when I grew older I learned about its business practices and refused to shop there. I do have fond memories of Kmart, even though the experience was never particularly pleasing to the senses; I lament the disappearance of Kmart, even though I was one of the people whose absence led to its downfall. Southwestern Ohio back then also got a chain of stores called Meijer, which were like Super Walmart and Super Target before those existed: going there as a kid in the early '90s was so bloody pleasant-and somehow much more enjoyable than a Super Target even though in some way it's the same idea. I never knew about Target until '94 or '95, when I visited one near Atlanta.
I've moved around a lot, and since the late '90s I've always had at least one Target near me: I used to enjoy going there, but now in my early forties I seem to be done with enjoying stores like that. On rare occasions (less than once a year), I'll step into a mall-which I strongly enjoy for a handful of reasons, even though I don't buy anything there. Another thing I lament is the disappearance of Sears and JCPenney. Part of the appeal of a mall to me nowadays is that in many ways it's the same as it was in the early '90s, when we got a new mall in town and the whole thing felt pleasant and refreshing and exciting and optimistic. Last night while I was walking I was thinking that, to slow the disappearance of malls, I could set aside a fraction of my budget for mall-shopping specifically and go to a mall maybe two or three times a year and shop there-for the nostalgic experience, to get a small number of clothes in whatever is the latest fashion, and to try to keep the mall from going under.

We didn't have them where I lived in the Bay Area either(richmond/san pablo region). But yep, there was a K-Mart though. Now I think there's only like 2 K-Marts left standing in the entire country and they'll surely be gone soon too. RIP K-Mart. 😢
Kentucky here, Target was king in the 90s 'round these parts. We don't shop at Target anymore though, lol.
@@BiometricFileHasBeenCorrupted, oh, man, you've just made me realize that that's one thing that has changed at Target: the smell. It used to be popcorn near the door, but now it's coffee. For me that's an improvement: I find that popcorn, like peanut-butter, is nice when you're the one eating it, but stinks if it's only someone else that's eating it.

And no bags now in a couple of the states. You forget to bring a bag to Walmart, you are SOL as they don’t provide any, even for ten cents a bag.

It’s funny that even a video of scanning items at checkout can be retro now. I remember my mom working a grocery store in the late sixties early seventies, she had the old, big mechanical button registers. When she would be stocking shelves, she had a cart with round sticks, each with a different round price stamp on it next to a messy well with the ink stamp pad.
This was excellent! TY for sharing it. I graduated high school in 1992. This was a definite time machine for me!
Love seeing how shopping at Walmart was like back in 1992. Where I live, there was no Walmart until 1999. 1999 is when we got a Super Walmart which was all farm field and cows until 1999.

Wmt was a small but rapidly growing regional retailer in 92 mainly near the Arkansas as it expanded its "footprint" outside that area in enusing years. It was by no means the natl juggernaut it has since become.

LOL, everyone paying with cash. I forgot debit cards didn't even exist back then. Also so weird seeing Wally World using paper bags..I understand why they were killed off(at most retailers anyway), but there's just something strangely 'appealing' about paper bags vs the crappy plastic bags we're forced to use now. Like they somehow make the shopping experience feel more premium. It's weird.
Debit cards were around. Only grocery stores took them at the POS though…
And credit cards were called Charge Cards back then. When debit cards first came out, everyone called then check cards. Old people still call them that.

Sam Walton used to visit his stores. I worked at Sam's Club around 88-89 and met him. He came through my register. Bought a wind breaker.
Miss the sound of the register and the printing at the end of every
transaction.
Those recipes with proper care could still be around. Did not fade like the thermal ones of today.

I also set my bills in the drawer all facing the same way.
The cashier at 2:00 does count the change back up to what the customer paid, though it's hard to hear.
What type of cashiering where you in?

I used to like being out, being social and enjoying the world and society, now I just wanna hide away at home playing video games and watching RUclips. I mostly only go out to work since I have to do that, but otherwise not very much.. I was 11 or 12 when this was shot. I love all the amazing technology we have now, but sadly/ironically said technology is also a major factor in why the world sucks so much now. Sometimes I wonder if I would give up the internet, smart phones, GPS, Netflix, etc. to return to better times like this. Honestly I think I would.

I started in retail in 1992. People were rude back then as they are now. Thankfully it’s only a small percentage. This fantasy that people in the past were nicer and more polite is just waxing nostalgia…
Oh, they were plenty rude and snoody back then. It's just that now there are consequences for being like that. The people haven't really changed. You can see these sad sacks in Yahoo comments, and sometimes here on RUclips comments.

Cashiering was honestly easier before convoluted technology bogged down the process, a lot of paperwork though.

No groceries back then there. That is a place could operate offline with all that coin and currency. And they had the more environmental paper bags. Though these days we could round the total up to the nearest nickel or dime just like gas stations round from nine tents of a cent which is charged to the nearest penny. Add dollar coins and get rid of the penny like Canada did decade ago.
With inflation a penny in nothing... get rid of them now.
Canada replaced its paper money with sheets of plastic, because they're more durable. I'd rather have biodegradable plant-fibers than more plastic.
Whenever someone proposes eliminating the penny because it now costs more than one cent to make a penny, I wish people would recognize (A) the bigger loss that occurs if everything has to be rounded to the nearest five or ten cents and (B) that the savings in the production of other denominations more than make up for the loss in minting pennies (it takes nowhere near $100 to make a $100 bill, for example, and nowhere near 25¢ to make a quarter).
Also would rather have the current setup in the U.S.A. on the currency verses the plastic in Canada.
You still could price to the penny but round the total. We already do that with gas which is like $4.XX9 (nine tents of a cent) so we already round to the nearest penny (some hardware stores nuts and blots can be priced at a fraction of a cent too) To the nickel would be the next step is the next step. I could see the time spend handing penny could be saved verses a one time reprogramming of registers to round to the nearest five or ten cents. A penny from ~1978 (so less than half a century ago) is about today's nickel and Penny is worth 1/5 now.
A penny every four seconds is nine an hour so we waste more time handling it that it is worth. So much more than just the one time production costs. ~Half of U.S.A. states pay $10+ an hour for the floor so even for a minimum wage employee the handling time adds up.
@@mitchell.9632, I hope a cashier takes a lot less than four seconds to handle one penny. I've just emptied a changepurse into custard-cups similar to the compartments in a cash-drawer and tried counting out change. It takes less than one second (so a lot less than four seconds) to grab a penny: i.e., I can count five into my hand in less than five seconds. (Of course, there's more to cash-handling than pulling the coins from their compartments when making change.)
But let's say it's one per second: that's $36.00 an hour. Switching to only nickels means, on average, gaining or losing 2.5¢ in each transaction that doesn't naturally end in 0 or 5. I'll let you do the math and figure out how that compares to cashiers' typical wages, how little it takes to pay someone to count pennies, and what would be lost if pennies were not part of taking in money and making change.
@@mitchell.9632 , we also needn't be stuck with a four-cent gap between pennies and nickels. There are pros and cons to that. In the U.K., the common coins for fractions of a pound sterling are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, and 50p: sticking with 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, and 25¢ is not set in stone.

We had our first Walmart stores in the Huntsville, AL region around the mid 80s I believe. My first memories of going into a Walmart store was around 1993 or 1994. It changed a little bit since I don't recall the light blue vests the associates wore back then. I guess they were phasing out of the light blue vests and into the darker blue vests you would see in the later half of the 90s.
Oh yeah, I remember those funky looking scanners that looked like an asterisk sign, and the red and green lights when scanning each item.
Totally forgot about the star shaped place to scan a bar code. I remember all this very well.

Yes that is due to vending machines why the government ordered our private money changing cooperation The "Federal" Reserve to keep them the same (the Federal Reserve is about as Federal as then named Federal Express, maybe time for a name change on the "Fed" now too).

Ikr? I don't mind the self checkouts but it would be better if they had more than ONE cashier working. Even during Christmas time when everyone is out Christmas shopping my local Walmart had one cashier working with a line of shoppers that went all the way to the back of store, with about 4 other employees standing there watching the people at the self checkouts lol. If they would have had 3 of those people working as cashiers then they could have avoided the huge line.

My mom worked there in 1994. One wild day she got a guy who asked if they had a floating guncase. My mom doesnt hunt so had no idea what he was talking about. She asked him what he meant and he had a meltdown saying she worked there she should know. He angrily went back to get one himself anyways and then when he came up to the line again he proceeded to whip his credit card at her with such force it cut her hand a little. This was a year before the Wal-Mart by me opened up, which became the go to department stores from that point on. That being even when the local K-Mart relocated to a bigger, better location. Too bad the Caldor by me went out of business a handful of years later though.
As a kid in the 90s I always wondered what the cashier meant when they said “red line” on the speaker. I still don’t know.
I means that if your a cashier with no customers in your line for you to go stand in front of the register on the red line on the floor and direct customers to your register for faster checkout.

No customers in pajamas, nobody riding around on scooters because they’re too lazy to get a little exercise, the cashiers look nice and don’t have multi colored hair and multiple personalities telling you about how terrible their got-it-made-teenage lives are! I had forgotten how much pride people used to take in themselves and their lives.
