Exploring Ukraine's Underground Rave Revolution

  • The 2014 revolution brought Kiev nightlife to a complete standstill. As protests turned into riots, and government security forces opened fire on protestors, the country fell into crisis. But out of the ashes of revolution has risen a new generation. Slava Lepsheev, who’d lost his job because of the financial crisis triggered by the war, had had enough, and started Cxema, a raw, hard and hypnotic techno rave that he took to whatever semi-legal venue he could set a soundsystem up in. So together with Slava, and the city’s brightest young lights, we followed young Kiev as they prepared for a night at Cxema, from building the venue to watching the sunrise break.

Disclaimer: I'm a 19-year-old lower middle class Ukrainian from Kyiv (where it all happens); some of my friends rave, I don't.
Even though I liked the video (script, camera work, lighting - outstanding), I certainly feel like it's heavily over-victimizing our rave culture. I don't blame i-D for this, I can see how they are constantly looking for powerful and touching stories. It seems to me i-D were looking for this kind of story here and people whom they interviewed gave them what they wanted. The truth is, despite the fact Ukrainian revolution did make a huge impact on our society, it wasn't nearly as devastating as you might guess from the video. It wasn't war-like devastating, you see. It was a huge mess, some people lost their jobs, but it wasn't devastating.
When the thing went off, I was your regular upper-working lower-middle class of age 15. 1 couldn't lose my job, simply because I couldn't have one. I also, thankfully, didn't lose any of my siblings. That said, I've been living in suburbs all my life and most of my close friends are coming from the working class, so I'm fairly sure I don't live in a bubble. I don't want to say it, but CXEMA is too much of a joke these days. It's expensive and most people go there for drugs, not music. I'm not a raver myself, but most of my raving friends don't take it seriously anymore. Think of hip underage amphetamine-driven girls in fancy clothes and you'll get the feel.
What happened in Ukraine is tragic and I know there's lots of pitiful stories associated with it, but it has little to do with rich spoiled brats you'll find behind the doors of CXEMA.

Ok the documentary itself doesn't speak about drugs, but the girl with the shaved head in the beginning stated that there were more drugs coming in after the crisis. Soooo it's not like they cut it out or something but it isn't the focus of this docu, it's about them organizing and building parties from the ground up. The passion behind creating an atmosphere and a party is so much more worth than the drugs that people use at such events, it's just an extra but not even close the most important part which is atmosphere and the underground music played at these raves.

Dear Molly, i invite you to visit Ukraine to see that kid-thinking junkies (which probably you will even not find) and to compare them with people who "make their time more fun" in Donbass. They're not smarter, they're just shameless

Well, I would do prolly same thing that they are doing. Im more about the culture. And I hate countries. Nations. Large groups. I think that's the stupidest thing, that needs to exist. In some type of way, they keeping culture going. You can't live working. Look at us, Poles, we were living working after war. Now we don't have any culture, we just take everything from USA, and other countries. Our country is boring. Everything is black and white. Some of us migrate to other countries, just cuz of that. People need to have fun, without that, you will end like Poles. Boring, scared of every type of standing out (it's changing), focused on work, drinking a a lot (in not good type of way). They keeping people having fun, they are not boring. Let's pretend that's their work.

Mariam M, people in USSR didn't have 90-s because in 90-s there was no USSR. It collapsed in 1991 lol. In early 90's Russia or Ukraine you could buy heroin or a ten-year-old prostitute in the center of the city, crowds of children were sniffing glue on the streets and you think someone cared about jeans? Even in USSR in late 80-s you could wear whatever you want because of perestroika. Soviet music fest -

*shrugs* As someone in their 40's with a face still full of steel, huge lobes, tongue split, covered in ink and a tendency to wear all black, I could care less what other people are wearing or not wearing. What I care about is VIBE, general attitude, the way people treat each other. What I care about is sick tunes. And in general, freedom, especially at events like this.
Anything that can capture the spirit or essence of what I remember fondly as the wave of rave immediately following the warehouse Detroit scene that I got to personally experience makes me happy. But then, I have simple tastes, and am in general one of those easy to please, easy to gt along with types.

Very impressed with this documentary. Everything from the video editing to the choice of music has left me speechless. I originally come from Oryol, Russia, however chose to leave the country due to its lack of opportunities in terms of creative arts and education. In comparison to Russia, London has taught me about the rave culture/fashion much earlier. The main thing I've learned about being in the UK - is that it allows you to be who the fuck you want to be (and still be respected by others). These young individuals are truly managing to break the boundaries in a country which still has to do a lot of catching up. Best of luck to all of you out there in Ukraine. Be free and do what you love the most - create!!!

Well, you know, regarding Ukraine, it's not at all like in Iran, where people could go to jail for a long time for doing raves or playing some punk music. Some illegal(!) raves can bu shut down, some legal clubs can be raided for selling illegal drugs, sometimes police exceeds allowed force, which is very bad and people's attention is very sharp in that matter after Maidan. So this whole video -it a bit exaggerating thhe whole atmosphere to make this postap/cyberpunk/on the edge feeling, but its not what is really going on from my point of view.

sorry for the late answer everyone. but yeah i agree with you. it's really common for things to get exagerrated in this type of video. what I meant to say by rebellious youth is; youth that doesn't follow the mainstream culture of their country or youth that found a way to escape the unstable situation of their country.

    • @superduperfreakyDj

"rebelious" is not very correct for these kids. These kids aren't taking care of the problems but running away from them, they're not rebuilding the country and they're not defending it. It's really just a deluded and cowardly escapism from problems that they create themselves.

They play really dope music, and slay in their clothes, but what they say is just shallow, careful information about the situation in Ukraine. It’s obvious they didn’t really care of what was and is happening in the country, they just wanted to seem alarmed for you guys, for the filming crew. They are the kind of people who run from the problems our country is facing to the world of showing off , dancing and , possibly, drugs. Thats a complete misrepresentation of Ukrainian youth.

Problems are made by humans and the society we live in. Blow it all up and let people be free. But no people rather make war, wage slaves, consumption society, pollution, etc. It's all because of governments, money, greed and who get's which part of a country. All bullshit made up by mankind. We made life so much more difficult that it already was tbh. I'm not saying that what they are doing is good, they are consumption based too if you see how to all want new and trendy clothing etc. , and they should turn face to the problems instead of run away from them but even better would be that there wouldn't be any problems at all to begin with but of course politics and economy is always trouble.
