I can't believe I'm 45 years old and I've just discovered this brilliance?! what a sad sad story too of a brilliant talent and an obviously lost person? Truly lovely, wish he hadn't left the earth so soon.
First heard Nick Drake - One Of these Things 1st. about 5 yrs ago, He is one of my all time fave musicians. Its to bad he left the world early. he would have made many great albums!
The fact that people are discovering this song from a book, gives a Nick Drake fan a bitter-sweet feeling. I hope you all find joy in all his other songs like we do.
I love the fact that all the songs from the "One Winter" playlist are older songs that most people who read the book haven't heard of before... And now because of Perks these songs are all getting recognition. It really makes Charlie seem that much more genuine. :)
Thanks Charlie, you have great taste in music. What a great book! Thank you Stephen Chbosky for the great journey that is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I really relate to Charlie. (I feel a sense of unity)
Reading Perks of Being a Wallflower now. Charlie may be a wallflower, but he has an infinitely epic taste in music. Thanks for the playlist. :-) I'm glad to be listening. :-P
Dear people who read perks, Don't just listen to these songs go forth and listen to the rest of this album. You were just given the gift of great music.
I've never heard of perks of being a wallflower. But I don't think it matters how people come by an artist. In fact we're lucky that there are so many ways to be exposed to great music, even if it's by virtue of an advertisement or an otherwise inconsequential film. For once it is the arrival, and not the journey, that matters.
The name is of the book is "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", and actually it was published in 1999. Still, if people listened to music because of its modernity and not listen to it because it was "sooo two years ago" most people wouldn't actually be here hence this song was released in 1986.
It's off a book "Perks of being a wallflower" That this song is mentioned in. It has recently been converted into a movie starring Emma Watson. I have never read the book, but the movie has changed my life. Definately for the better!
Since we're all talking about Perks of Being a Wallflower, I'll join in... Charlie is the sweetest, most sensitive, most insightful male protagonist I've read in all my years of reading Young Adult fiction. And I'd have to say I agree. I do wish and hope that he is real somewhere...
I like that I found Nick Drake before Charlie, but it's great all the same. Here's to anyone who related as much as I did with the line about not sleeping with the girl you could have at the party. Take from it what you will. Be a filter, not a sponge. :]
it shouldnt matter how you got here. (even though perks is AMAZING) all that matters is that you enjoy the music. everyone on here saying its terrible that you discovered music from a movie or book.. how else are we supposed to find out about music from years ago?
@JustTheChorus It's a first. We're not mindlessly watching a television screen and hearing these songs off of some soundtrack or commercial. It's quite fascinating and wonderful. :}
***** Yes!! hahaha and i also wanna read" How to kill a mockinbird, and all the books he read during the book! I know instead if writing to my Diary, I write to Friend haha :)
""The sun was gone and the heat died down And autumn reached for her golden crown I looked behind as I heard a sigh But this was the time of no reply." Recorded during the "Five Leaves Left" sessions (some time between November and December of 1968), "Time of No Reply" by Nick Drake is track 1 from "Time of No Reply," a 1987 compilation album featuring outtakes and alternative versions of songs by English folk singer Nick Drake. It was also included as the fourth disc of the 1987 version of the Nick Drake box set "Fruit Tree". ruclips.net/video/P4D1a00cbFA/видео.html
There is a later version of this ....a last grasp by his recording friends which appears with other pieces on a CD. with it was mixed strings and some orchestration. Nick had to seperately record his guitar...then his voice...by that time he couldnt put both together at once. I've not heard this early fresh version. They say he used to play in clubs and hated it because of the superficial conversations going on around him and thought..... No one was really listening.
I'm making my best friend the mixed tape because we read the book together :) It'll be in a plain white paper case, and I'm going to colour "One Winter" onto the front!
I would include myself but I heard him from a commercial. Kind of sucks because I know how it feels when people discover a good song by an artist through the media and then throw it away as if it was yesterdays news and move on
When you see all these comments about the perks of being a wallflower, dont you kind of think like Charlie? somehwhere in the world, someone is looking up this same song, thinking about the good days like you, doing the exact same thing? i think about it and it gives me the chills.
there's also an orchestrated version of this masterpiece on 'Made to Love Magic' album.... I'll never understand why he wasn't a mega star in his lifetime?
Dear friend, I think that people say things like "We are infinite" because they like songs that make them feel like they belong to something when they're sad. I hope it can be that for them. Love Always, ~Charlie
@XOLINDZXO14 He's a character from a book/upcoming movie titled "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", written by Stephen Chbotsky. In the book, he makes a mix tape for a friend as part of a Secret Santa gift (please correct me if I am wrong). This was one of the songs included, among many others. Such an amazing book. You should check it out!
The perks of being a wallflower o en español, Las ventajas de ser un marginado. En ese libro el personaje principal hace un playlist y esta canción está incluida en el :)
@taymx41 wallflowers eventually grow to cover the whole wall, peeking out every little crevice. some of the most beautiful people i know started as a little flower.. :)
"There are those who say the world is ending, that the Rapture has come and gone. That our species has expired. And there are those who say it's merely time for change, nightfall before a new morning. I'm getting so fat."
did this man write anything I don't fall in love with.
I can't believe I'm 45 years old and I've just discovered this brilliance?! what a sad sad story too of a brilliant talent and an obviously lost person? Truly lovely, wish he hadn't left the earth so soon.

Well I read it when I was around 13 and I'll be 26 this year. So I was too young to have heard and loved Nick Drake before then :)

Does it really matter? Music should be love regardless of time. Just some discoveries take longer. Doesn't mean it holds no value.

Thank You Charlie! :)
