Many artists merely walk the surface of the heart, never baring soul, never contemplating feelings, never wholly grasping the dismal and the shadows. Where all other artists fail, Nick Drake finds a way to connect.
His mellow baritone alone had depths of both feeling and intelligence. Put it side by side with Donovan (similar tone) and what you described devastatingly plays out~~~~~a surface scuttle the deep dive
I'm crying right now listening to it. I just hope my wife who is sitting next to me doesn't see the tears I could never explain to her what on earth I'm crying about
Stop complaining about him getting recognition! It's obvious that he wrote songs for himself (not the industry) and they aren't to be easily felt or understood by everyone. We are just lucky that someone recorded it...
I just heard of Nick Drake this year, in July actually. I fell in love with the man's work not knowing that he'd died years ago. I had this footage that I'd took and the song seemed to fit.
You were steered to this guy by a higher power. He was and is GODs gift his supreme gift to us all... And will be for all time to come HE was a miracle. This song is proof of it
I don`t want to say it`s my favourite song by Nick Drake-simply because all his songs are so extraordinary-as was the man, but I hear this one over and over again and it is just outstanding.
Listened to this and to Pink Moon after reading about him in Acoustic Guitar. Made me wonder how guys like this can be overlooked by the mainstream. In his case, maybe the complexity of his tunings and the way he constructed his songs made it difficult for amateurs like me to learn and play in the living room.
a poet who became a skilled guitarplayer, no wait a guitarplayer who became a poet delivering the good of his tremendous soul in a way most people will never understand. whatever.. his lyrics are so straight haunting that i just have to admit that he wasnt just talented he was honestly and felt the words i love to listen to every now and then. thx for sharing
His songs-especially this one are from another world. They are really the only kind of song that is any good to us. Most other songs, even the best, only take us to the edge of the precipise but Nicks take us with him on the plunge over the edge. That is why they are so scary.
Even though I didn't discover his music directly through commercials or movies, I realize that it's compiled here on RUclips at least in part because someone recognized his greatness and considered it worthy of use. I can waste energy sneering at that or be grateful that this has made it easier for us to discover his body of work. I choose the latter. Given that the man himself craved recognition but could not bring himself to do what was necessary to achieve fame, I'm happy for him.
good to find solitude while listening to nick drake songs in the office. summer time again, indeed!! missing old life... missing old self... stucked in the rat race... when will all these end?
Is up to you to decide when all of this are going to end. We are so used to this rat race.....that our brains don’t think anymore. As Nick says: be true to your inner compass and taking the consequences despite shallow praise or dissent from the outside world.
Feeling, emotion and an ability to get under you skin and inside your head!! recently discovered Nicks music and Im inspired, astounded and just in awe at someone the same age as me producing such beautiful songs.. Its real, its raw and im very moved. Irish writer and music fanatic.
I always envision Nick, Jeff Buckley, and Elliot Smith jamming away with the biggest smiles on their faces, and a feeling of freedom finally in their hearts. God bless you dudes, you are the best. Haters always gonna hate. Just let them go away. Nick Drake is wonderful. :)
Please beware of them that stare They’ll only smile to see you while Your time away And once you’ve seen what they have been To win the earth just won’t seem worth Your night or your day Who’ll hear what I say? Look around you find the ground Is not so far from where you are But don’t be too wise For down below they never grow They’re always tired and charms are hired From out of their eyes Never surprise Take your time and you’ll be fine And say a prayer for people there Who live on the floor And if you see what’s meant to be Don’t name the day or try to say It happened before Don’t be shy you learn to fly And see the sun when day is done If only you see Just what you are beneath a star That came to stay one rainy day In autumn for free Yes, be what you’ll be Please beware of them that stare They’ll only smile to see you while Your time away And once you’ve seen what they have been To win the earth just won’t seem worth Your night or your day Who’ll hear what I say Open up the broken cup Let goodly sin and sunshine in Yes that’s today And open wide the hymns you hide You’ll find renown while people frown At things that you say But say what you’ll say About the farmers and the fun And the things behind the sun And the people round your head Who say everything’s been said And the movement in your brain Sends you out into the rain
So I love Nick's music. Sometimes I wish I could go back into the past, find him, and chat over a cup of tea about some of the things he writes.. I really like "Things Behind the Sun".
we believe in the sea that the man is there with the perfect fifth staring into the void. the colours and the colours behind the moon are already in the rain. thank you nick.
I agree....Drake knew the nuances because he was the one who received the inspiration to write the song. He knew how to portray it better. He was probably a perfectionist too. He was very frustrated that no one bought his stuff though he put so much of himself in it.
@oddball111 nooooo, what he actually is saying is that there are so many people complaining that Nick Drake didn't/doesn't get much recognition (even though he definitely does), but in appreciating the music of a man long since passed, they fail to notice the scores of virtually unknown musicians alive today. @barrymasteller Agree 100%! The problem is that artists (I use the word to differentiate him and those like him from the "Beibers") are often only truly appreciated posthumously as their work is profound and only appreciated by following generations. While it is very sad that he didn't get to see his work reach the mainstream, I feel confident that he would be very pleased to know that he will never be considered a passing fad. His music stands the test of time, the true sign of genius,
Beautiful song . Nick Drake genius at songwriting , in the studio he was perfection . Great shame his innate shyness and lack of self confidence stopped him from performing .
Thank you. Drake wrote the song so I like his interpretation better. Mars Volta was paying tribute and I don't think they meant a competition. Nick Drake Influences artists the world over.I like his better, but I though MV did a cool interpretation of his song.
@barrymasteller for the tiniest of milliseconds, i thought you'd written that Justin Bieber was misunderstood, i choked & coffee went up my nose :( That'll teach me for speed reading... But, well said my friend. Well said indeed
Yeah he was, which is why it didn't make sense to me that he was frustrated it didn't sell well. He was human though, so it doesn't have to make sense. He didn't want to perform live due to anxiety and/or whatever other reservations he had about it, but I guess he still wanted his albums to sell because he knew what he was making was really good. I can understand that I guess, just wish he did something about it if it really bothered him.
I work in the audio industry and the very idea of perfect vocal makes me wanna puke. why? Because it is software driven. Yes, we have created software that will analyze the vocal and correct any imperfections in pitch as the vocal is delivered. GROASE!! Imperfection is what makes art belong to an artist and sets him aside from anyone else. it reveals the artist to his audience..
Many artists merely walk the surface of the heart, never baring soul, never contemplating feelings, never wholly grasping the dismal and the shadows. Where all other artists fail, Nick Drake finds a way to connect.
you brilliantly described what so many feel my friend
His mellow baritone alone had depths of both feeling and intelligence. Put it side by side with Donovan (similar tone) and what you described devastatingly plays out~~~~~a surface scuttle the deep dive
Genius acoustic guitar sounds...that I first heard in 1973, and have never forgotten..
This is the only song I have ever listened to in my life that has caused me to tear up for no good reason besides the beauty of this piece.
I'm crying right now listening to it. I just hope my wife who is sitting next to me doesn't see the tears I could never explain to her what on earth I'm crying about
The same thing happen to me but with Place to be, couldn't listen to it the first three times without crying.
Stop complaining about him getting recognition! It's obvious that he wrote songs for himself (not the industry) and they aren't to be easily felt or understood by everyone. We are just lucky that someone recorded it...
I'm a dark-hearted cynical bastard, but this is one of the more beautiful songs I've ever heard.
I love how everyone here's commenting on the pitiful state on current industry standards. Let's keep the folk scene alive, guys!
I just heard of Nick Drake this year, in July actually. I fell in love with the man's work not knowing that he'd died years ago. I had this footage that I'd took and the song seemed to fit.

You’re right!. He have a special way to communicate his honest and personal feeling.❤

I can still see him standing there singing this in1969 and the special feel of it
Please beware of them that stare
They’ll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you’ve seen what they have been
To win the earth just won’t seem worth
Your night or your day
Who’ll hear what I say?
Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are
But don’t be too wise
For down below they never grow
They’re always tired and charms are hired
From out of their eyes
Never surprise
Take your time and you’ll be fine
And say a prayer for people there
Who live on the floor
And if you see what’s meant to be
Don’t name the day or try to say
It happened before
Don’t be shy you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done
If only you see
Just what you are beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day
In autumn for free
Yes, be what you’ll be
Please beware of them that stare
They’ll only smile to see you while
Your time away
And once you’ve seen what they have been
To win the earth just won’t seem worth
Your night or your day
Who’ll hear what I say
Open up the broken cup
Let goodly sin and sunshine in
Yes that’s today
And open wide the hymns you hide
You’ll find renown while people frown
At things that you say
But say what you’ll say
About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people round your head
Who say everything’s been said
And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain
Thank you for the lyrics.
Beautiful video for a beautiful song.
i listened to TMV cover on this song and thats how i found out about Nick. this is REAL music
I'm in love with his voice. So velvety and perfect. *sigh*
So I love Nick's music. Sometimes I wish I could go back into the past, find him, and chat over a cup of tea about some of the things he writes..
I really like "Things Behind the Sun".
can listen to this song endlessly
just found out about him by accident! i am in love with his work!
This may be even more hauntingly beautiful than the title track.
Hace trece años atrás, conocí la música de Nick y lo ame, gracias a Charles Learmount, aún te amo. xxx
this is my favorite song and i've been a music fanatic for the last 10 years
Nick is like tears...
we believe in the sea that the man is there with the perfect fifth staring into the void. the colours and the colours behind the moon are already in the rain. thank you nick.
My favorite Nick Drake song, and that's saying a lot, cause I love everything by Nick.

All Nicks work was taken down from you tube and only seeing now they've reinstated it! A legend
when I saw him live this was the song that I remembered most, though all were good
its nice to know there are alot of real people commenting on Nick Drake..Not that phoney nonsense stuff people like texting!

His fragile music is unique.
+manoftheworld1000 simple not so fragile, indeed unique.
Was listening to his Pink Moon album earlier today... and this is still stuck in my head.
Which is a good thing.
Beautiful song, incredible lyrics.
you cant deny the insane awesomeness that is the mars volta. but nick drake is god here for sure
Actually, I have just watched it three times, and it is a brilliant film to accompany Nick's exquisite song; Bravo!
His voice in this song..💜

Drake's magical dark blues . . . your surreal visual trip . . . a perfect match.
I want to get the video tools to do stuff like this
Jaymz
Dear danielion,
I really like this video and I think you are right in saying it was completely inspired. It somehow complements the other worldly and trancendental feeling of the song. It is very very good and has become one of my favorite spots when I need something from out of the world too.
nick's the only music i can fall asleep to. he was a sheer talent. his music goes on, even though he is not here, genious
Yup. Although I love ALL of his work, this is really his greatest statement. And thanks for the wonderful eye candy :-)
this man is awasome..........nothing compare with him actually
Hoje, se estivesse entre nós, teríamos o privilégio de ouvir grandes criações musicais.
Oustanding video. One of the best I've seen here. Well done.
Wonderful vocal performance, this is poetry. I love the song.
i dont hate you and i respect your opinion.
i think his voice is beautiful fragile and soft as his guitar playing and lyrics and that makes his style so complete.... everything fits.

hauntingly good - and with an answer like consoling one's self - thank you
Oh, we are so glad you do !!!!
Amazing song, and very cool fan vid ;)
bravo pour cette vidéo
sobrement psychédélique

@Brookenesss
you have very mature and excellent taste. When i was 14, about half of what i liked was complete crap, thankfully the other half was not. Good that nick threw you a lifeline and from so far away. He's got great aim and of course, sweet timing.
nice - so evocative
sweet vid , great tune
great video, thanks !

@stephenmusicman .... its on his 'pink moon' album
Wonderful... impressive picking too
he did kind want recognition.. or at least people to hear his message, he was mad(according to wiki) about people telling him that he was a genius but he still couldn't achieve success.. hanigng on a star :)

Very lovely video
just so class
it's sad that people only realize how good he is after his death
Holy crap. Over 1/4 of a million views and only 4 dislikes. Those 4 people obviously have no feels.
Music to my heart :)
you might be onto something...beautiful song no matter.
@mauriciobeltre Chile has one too. His name is Victor Jara.:)
@artstar19 Or misfortunately died today(yesterday). I totally agree. Drake is possibly the most autumnal writer since Dylan Thomas.
Just to comment;part of Drakes Problems stemmed from the fact that he was an insomniac and he wrote alot of night themed songs like "Pink Moon", etc.
Thank you. Drake wrote the song so I like his interpretation better. Mars Volta was paying tribute and I don't think they meant a competition. Nick Drake Influences artists the world over.I like his better, but I though MV did a cool interpretation of his song.
Pretty vid
Beautiful song. Does anyone know how the lyrics are *meant* to be interpreted (i.e., as Nick Drake intended them to be)?
@barrymasteller for the tiniest of milliseconds, i thought you'd written that Justin Bieber was misunderstood, i choked & coffee went up my nose :( That'll teach me for speed reading... But, well said my friend. Well said indeed

Also try John Mayer or Syd Barret. I don't know you may like one of them.
