Though my background is mostly classical (western) I have had some training in Indian Classical (Ragas) as well. I cant say I am an expert but I do try to incorporate the ragas in some of my original compositions. Can't say I agree that western musicans cant improvise on Indian classical music, they sure can, but music is an art, if the colors are blended together, result will be beautiful :)
I am from the USA too. I also play this on my silver flute.
